Biography -
Dr. Matthews served in numerous roles throughout her medical career. Prior to her current role she served as the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Community Care and also as the Deputy Executive Director, Provider Relations and Services, VHA Office of Community Care. Before joining the federal government, she served as the Chief Medical Officer of Mile Square Health Center within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, overseeing 13 interdisciplinary primary care sites within the federally qualified health center.

Dr. Matthews is a board-certified family physician with a focus on underserved medicine and advocacy. Dr. Matthews founded and co-directs the Tour for Diversity in Medicine (T4D), the flagship initiative of a non-profit organization, seeking to bring premedical enrichment activities to minority high school and undergraduate students across the country.

Dr. Matthews received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received a J.D. from the University of Chicago and has a Bachelor of Science from Duke University.

She has wonderful clinical experience and credentials. She is a decided asset.
As a clinical psychologist and professor, my main concerns are related to Behavioral health Care.
I continue to see in my clinical consultations w/ combat vets back to Korea, unresolved combat trauma and compacted grief. I also firmly believe in group therapy over time to be an efficacious intervention as it recapitulates the intimate psychosocial unit: the squad. I think GTH. is underutilized and often conducted over 6 weeks in many circumstances in the most urgent vets.

How will this additional care track help reduce the 20 suicides per day when only 6 of 20 are not being followed at VAC's? Please pass this along since I do not follow these kinds of platforms.

I would like a answer to why (1) Why does it take so long for vets to get closure on there disability claims? (2) Your stance on the comments that Fox News made that vets are drawing disability and should not be entitled. (3) Your steps to followup up on vets drawing a disability and obviously not disabled. Not PTSD disability claims but claims for a bad back etc. I know of one issue this retired SSG has a Harley as big as my house and can pick it up.

How about answering why the V.A. denies deserving veteran's care who desperately need it in order to NOT be broken/damaged/etc... ? How about answering why veteran's like myself have been treated like ass, or even worse simply because of political BULLSHIT?

Answer those questions, concisely and not in politospeak, or in any manner which reverts to political BS, profit and greed, promotion, and positive press.

EDIT : And to be concise, here. My position on this is partly personal. I have been denied mental health claims since 2002 which I should NOT have been denied, only because the v.a. claims that there are no records which indicate I deserve mental health care. I have been given mental health treatment only sporadically and with no care to my needs based on people not believing what I say and calling me a lying prick and worse.
Because I have been denied mental health help, I attempted suicide MANY times and even got sent to prison due to being treated like shit.

I am completely done (after 19 years of abuse) playing nice and having tact. I want what I deserve and need to move on with my life and get out of this shit apartment I live in. I want a damn job, I want a life. And I damned well want the dental care I need so I can stop being forced to perform dental surgery on my damned SELF, just because I incorrectly rate 30% and not 60% or higher to qualify for dental services.
I am tired of being poor, living on so little money, and living in an apartment with horrible management. I am sick of dental pain, mental distress, and so DAMNED much more.

I am so tired of bullshit, that if the v.a. refuses to treat me as I deserve, then I demand to be shot in the head instead of forced to suffer in terrorism the rest of my life.

He needs a double lung transplant. He doesn't have much time left. He was told by the VA they don't have the expertise to perform the surgery. He needs to be given a chance for life by have a civilian doctor perform his surgery and fast. You thoughts??

I can help everyone in the North Texas community in which I live. But I built my company to help my fellow veterans, active service persons and their families. Yet, this stated group is the hardest for me to serve.
As a Texas Medicare IDTF #533293 (ultrasound only), Medicaid/CHIP, TRICARE, BCBS and Atena IN-Network provider, I have reached out to all veterans groups in my area and I have joined the American Legion to shake hands.
I do not know for sure, but I get the impression most of these older veterans would rather travel the 45 miles to the Dallas, TX. VA for thier ultrasound imaging as well as wait 15 to 45 days for their exam. I may not be seeing every angle of this situation.
Does the VA have a data base of providers that work along side the local VA?
As a VA certified veteran small business, I wrote a proposal to the VA. Being only local is an issue. Also, it appears those that hold the VA contract to provide imaging do not want to lose any patients. Travel distance and wait times be dammed?
Thank you in advance for reading my post. Any thoughts you might have are welcome. Marketing might be an issue for me.

I'm a 65 yr old, 50%+ disabled female Army vet married to an AF retiree, so I have coverage & options unavailable not available to some. Most of my care is through the Charles A. George VAMC in Asheville, NC. I use Community Care for mammograms & hearing aids (due to wait times) and use Medicare/TFL for my sleep apnea (wasn't happy with my care at VA). I participate in the VA MOVE program & am in the VAMC with some regularity. I have experience with practice management in this region.

With the transfer of CAG's fantastic director to the TN region & the prolonged time with an MD as acting director followed by the implementation of the Mission Act & its emphasis on community care & whole health, I see an erosion of quality care for Veterans in general.
For example, my hip replacement was done by a Duke Medical Resident under the supervision of a very senior orthopedic surgeon. Now, CAG has no residents, partially because of the schools but I wonder if the VA administrative changes are affecting it as well.
Can you promise that we can move between Community Care & VA seamlessly without jeopardizing the continuity of care or our personal information/medical records?

Does VHA plan to make changes so Veterans who receive prescriptions that are prohibited from being written with refills, from having monthly interruptions of treatment?
Example: VA fills prescription on July 15, and Veteran picks up prescription. Veteran requests prescription be refilled August 8. Veteran runs out of medication on August 14 (30 days after original refill). VA fills prescription on August 15 (because it was filled on the 15th the month prior, so they won't fill it prior to the 15th regardless of the number of days in the month), VA provides it to UPS on August 17. Veteran receives prescription on August 19, thereby experiencing an interruption of treatment.
Repeat monthly, despite raising the issue with provider and patient advocate.

When calling my VA (Leavenworth) I often get connected with the triage nurse. I see in my copay bills that generates a charge of 15.00 USD. Why does my bc/bs not cover this charge. Why is this not a service to me the Vet like any other nurse line advising my health care questions.

Dr. Matthews, I few years ago I developed a program to entertain bed bound vets at all the VA centers worldwide. The employees at the Minneapolis VA would not give me the time of day to show them how it works. As a disabled vet, I was willing to pay several thousands of dollars to make it possible for vets to play Bingo in their room, free of charge. I have used my Bingo program in nursing homes and senior centers, they love it. The VA employees act like robots, typical government workers. What form of entertainment do these guys have, maybe watch Oprah all day!

I am an 100% DAV, I am 60 y/o. I asked to go through the VA for my mammogram was told it was placed by the PCP. 3 weeks went by and still hadn't heard from the outside program, when I called no answer left a message 3 times with no return phone call. I finally, called again and was a little more assertive and was told she had a lot of referrals and that I would have to go to only one place in Dover De. (closest) to me, otherwise drive over an hour close to the VA hospital, which I thought this program was suppose to alleviate. I went ahead and am using my outside insurance since the VA can't get me in, in a timely manner.
Also, have had 2 arthroscopic surgeries on my left knee and need to be seen due to issues with it and they can't get me in til the end of August, again is that a timely manner. This program is not helping me so far in any way, I am not able to see a provider that would be a good orthopedist to take care of me. I also have heard from the people that the program was going to change again in 3 months.

I can't make it to the Q&A as I will be at my mammogram appt.

When will vets who live in Philippines, with no military injuries or illnesses, be treated the same way as if they lived in the U.S.? I was treated very well when I lived in California. As soon as I relocated to Philippines, that all stopped. I am still the same vet. All I hear is NO, you can not be seen byn the doctors atn then VA Clinic in Manila. But never a "reason why". Myself and hundreds of other vets living here offered our lives to help protect America, It now seem as if we no longer exist.

Instead of making it easier to see an urgent care doctor, make it easier to get tests done. I had to wait 93 days for a simple CAROTID ARTERY SCAN AND 1 week later I had a HEART ATTACK AND STROKE. Because the VA Gulf Coast Med Center in Biloxi Mississippi will not hire enough technicians to do these simple tasks. When will the VA MED CENTERS HIRE MORE DOCTORS, NURSES & TECHNICIANS? How many Veterans will have to die before there are enough DOCTORS, NURSES & TECHNICIANS!

In 2016 I wrote a suicide prevention program for the then SECVA Bob McDonald under the direction of former SECVA Max Cleland for whom I was a Senior West Coast Aide. The program is called Veterans SOS, sustaining our support. I presented it to the director of the VA Readjustment Counseling Office, Michael Fisher who suggested we use it in 6 pilot studies on the west coast. I also presented it to the director of DoD office of suicide prevention and outreach education Caitlin Johnson Phd and Wendy LaKso and her immediate director Kita Franklin. Also, to the V.A. National Suicide Prevention office, Kacie Kelly along with Greg Hughes who offered to collaborate with me. Once the new administration took office everything stopped. I would love to talk to you about the Veterans SOS suicide prevention program.

When is this MISSION thing expected to be fully deployed? I've checked several of the locations I normally visit so I could see where I might be able to get walk-in or emergency treatment if I needed it, and all of them indicated that the only place available within 50 miles was the VA clinic, which of course explicitly tells you via signs posted on the premises that they do NOT offer emergency or walk-in care and you should go to a nearby location. Which then, as I understand it, would not be reimbursable.
Related question: the procedures I've seen suggest that you need prior approval to get reimbursed for a visit to one of these non-VA locations, so how would that work if I, say, fell down and broke my leg? I should sit at home with a broken leg, fill out some forms and wait for approval in a week or so?

I am 100% disabled and receive my dental care at VA ANN Arbor. The care is great, but I was told for the work I need, the wait is over 18 months. I asked about community care and was told they have no dentist to refer to. I have an office in a building owned by and shared with a dentist. A ex Navy dentist, no less. What does he/ I have to do to connect for more timely care?

I would like to go to the DC VA hospital and set up my equipment and allow veterans to tell their stories. Not every veteran gets enshrined on a wall, and not all vets get statues and busts made of them. All vets do serve and have stories and deserve to be remembered. We have thousands of Vets in Guam yet we always have to have everything handled by Hawaii, which means huge differences in time and days... causing excessive paperwork, delays and communication. Does Pennsylvania handle all of California's Vet needs? Establish an office with some authority in Guam. It was the only US soil occupied by a foreign country and we get treated like we're not here.

I am 100% disabled and I have Maize Part C & D through Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. My wife has CHAMPVA and her out of pocket expenses are paid by the VA. Why can't the rules be changed so that I also could use CHAMPVA with my Medicare part C and D? I wounding have to drive 40 minutes to the nearest VA hospital or go reprints and round trying to get s local appointment.

Doctor Matthews bank you for taking my question. When it comes to pain management and given that ride a can only give a 30 day supply for open void medication why are our visits to our community care pain provider limited to once per calendar day or month ? Given the situation where a month May contain 31 days we are restricted from seeing our provider until the next calendar month thereby having to be well out on medication or sometimes up to 3 and 4 days should there be a weekend or holiday in robbed in the current or coming months we are told that is the onus of the veteran to stretch a 30 day medication to 33 and sometimes 34 days this is so wrong I have tried for years to get this situation rectified and as falling on deaf ears this is horible thank you I'll be curious to hear your response

Hello, with Veteran Suicides continuing at a rate that is unacceptable why are you not hiring more social workers such as myself, a former VA social worker suicide prevention case manager at Northern Indiana Healthcare System, I was forced to resign my VA position because I was not allowed to transfer my position due to not being approved for transfer. I have been unemployment for over 16 months, I completed the VA VocRehab Program and earned my Masters in Social Work,I was a huge advocate and mental health provider to all Veterans.

I have been waiting close to two years to get the “new” two shot shingles vaccine. I just talked with the pharmacy and they say it’s not around. When changes are implemented in a VA hospital are the veterans/patients ever asked for their input? I attend the Hampton VA and I have seen great strides to elevate the position of this hospital. The staff even has a new greeting! However, I still see patients wandering around not knowing where to go because the signage and directions are old and confusing. Even last week I was trying to help an older vet find the hematology clinic on the signage but it wasn't there. All the staff we asked gave us differing locations. We went to the information desk at the front entrance but it was not manned. Could you please consider updating the signage to match the veterans appointment sheet so they can walk into a VA hospital for the first time, see on the signage what it says on their appt sheet and follow the signs to the proper clinic on the correct floor and get to their appt on time?

I am a veteran who currently receives care at the Santa Rosa VA Clinic in California. I requested to see a dermatologist back in March 2019 when I was told that I first needed to see my primary doctor which they scheduled 3 months out as that was the first available appointment. I ended up receiving a random call from them a couple weeks later saying they had an opening within an hours time with another doctor who could approve my dermatology appointment. After seeing the other primary doctor, I went to make an appointment with a VA dermatologist and was told it would be a 4 month wait. I requested to use the Veteran's Choice program, now called the VA Mission Act, and was able to get an appointment in about a month due to my traveling. The private dermatologist prescribed me some medication which I brought to the Santa Rosa VA Clinic to get filled. The pharmacy told me that they could not approve the medication unless I saw a VA dermatologist first.
So my question is this, what is the point of being allowed to see an outside private doctor utilizing the VA Mission Act if the VA won't even cover the medication that is prescribed? Now I am forced to wait to another 3 months before seeing the VA dermatologist which I could have set up back in April and had an appointment in July, but now must wait until September. Thank you for your time and I hope you are able to answer my question as I have seen others with similar responses.

On September 20, 2018, I received a permanent injury to my right arm after a careless move by a nurse at the VA Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. We faxed over to Randy Bunting, NSO, all the paperwork we have from several doctors, proving that I have permanent injury to my right arm because she had scraped and moved the nerve in the said arm. Despite all the information that was faxed to his address twice and despite Mr. Bunting telling me he had all the information he needed, now I'm being told I must send proof of my permanent injury again and if it's not received in 3 days they will close the case. What do I need to do now? Is there anyone who could help me with this case? We need rent money, food and enough money to pay our bills. I had contacted the emergency hotline 6 weeks ago and Randy Bunting told me he was going to send me enough money for our rent and groceries but I haven't heard from him since, even though I contacted his office twice about this inquiry. Can you help me somehow, please?

Want to post a comment for Dr. Matthews on the new Mission Act emergency care.
I am in Germany military retired and 100% retired. Thanks to Mission Act, the military Lanstule hospital can now see me. However, because I am a civilian with Tricare, My medical condition, I was referred to civilian agencies.
The question I ask, how come I cannot be seen in the US military hospital with the Mission Act? A question for Dr. Matthews. Also, the persons were so rude... when I called. Waiting for a response...Thank you

Hello, I currently go to outpatient VA clinic in Bad Axe , MI. I have been reading about community urgent care program because I have to travel about 90 minutes to closest VA hospital. VA clinic in Bad Axe, MI is great, but if I have an emergency after hours, I have a problem. When I asked, I have been told there is no community urgent care available in my area. Which is Huron county, MI Caseville township. MI. Can you advise why we dont have that available to us Vets in this area.

I would like to know why does some VA center prescribe some outside doctors and other VA centers can not. For example. I have been have knee problems for over 9 years. The VA center in Columbia gives me anti-flammatory medication and exercise. While that helps a little it does not help with the symptoms. Other VA Center such as Augusta allow their patients to go to a Chiropractor. When I heard this I decided to try it out and stop taking so much medicine. It works for me but my VA doctor said she is not allow to recommend it to me in order for VA to support me. I can not understand why the services are different across the agencies. Medication is not always the answer. I want Columbia VA to be able to offer Chiropractor care so I can get off this medication and stop dealing with the side affects.

I had an emergency situation where I had to call 911. I advised the EMT service that I wished to be transported to the VA and they refused, transporting me to the nearest hospital. I advised the hospital that I wished to be transported to the VA but they declined. I had no choice, so my wife immediately notified the V.A.. The VA paid most of the bill but one company continues to bill me for radiology. When I asked the V.A. about this, they said to point them to the V.A. and they would handle it. Since then, I have continued to get bills and have gotten three different answers from the the V.A. with the last being that the medical service was not authorized and they were not obligated to pay. I am trying to find an answer on why I have gotten so many different answers, pointed to three different departments and finally gotten an answer that is 180 degrees different than the original. I have two other issues to ask about but this could go on for hours. It seems that there is more confusion and gate keeping at the V.A. than there was before the Mission Act. And the Mission act over Community Care... whew? This might have had good intentions but it actually looks like a wall built to keep veterans from getting needed care that the VA won't or cannot provide. I purposely did not get extremely detailed in this post due to privacy and other concerns but would be happy to talk to someone that would listen off line.

I would like to know the reason for us not being able to fill a prescription that a community provider writes at a local pharmacy. It is very inconvenient to have the doctor fax the notes and RX and then I am told I have to go to the VA Clinic which is over 40 miles to pick the RX up! Are you kidding me?

Good morning,
I have become aware of the the astonishing rate of suicide of veterans and while it seems that the Veterans Administration is spending millions on our health it also seems that there is a simple problem that no one wants to face. Alcoholism, without question this disease is a contributing factor in these suicides (25 to 40%) and it goes on seemingly without notice. There is a solution and for many veterans it is and has been Alcoholics Anonymous, I am an alcoholic with 16 years of sobriety and I am presently working with other alcoholic veterans as well as a few active duty military.
I have requested that I be allowed to set up an AA meeting at the local Veterans Hospital, my original request was made in late January of this year and while I still have hope there is no resolution in place at this time.
There are no costs related to this request, just a meeting place for 1 or 2 one hour meetings a week. I will be working jointly with other sober alcoholics whom many of including myself considered suicide as a way out, but we are here and offer a solution to others thru the veteran hospitals and clinics.
There are many that wish to help and there are no costs involved with our service as we do this in an effort to stay sober ourselves. My own Sponsor is a Vietnam Veteran with 43 years of sobriety and spent 31 months in the local Veterans Hospital due to military engagements on active duty.
This would seem like a simple request but apparently it is not, so I ask, Can You Help?

I have always been successful using the old VA Choice Program. Now I don't know what to do. Where does the authorization come from for me to go see a Dr.? I went to a emergency walk in clinic the other day. I told them to use my Medicare; and I had a co-pay. I have Tri West authorization letters for some Drs that are still valid/dated. i served in the MARINE CORPS from 1975 to 1981 as a field radio operator and secondary water survival safety instructor . and am now fully disable and on social security disability and only VA AND MEDICARE. what all medical can i receive as a Vietnam veteran beside primary-care and up until last year-the VA HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY PRIMARY CARE PROVIDES FOR EVERYTHING . BUT WHEN i AND MY SERVICE DOG WERE taken VIA AMBULANCE FROM THERAPY BECAUSE OF PASSING OUT WITH SEIZURE THE VA REFUSED TO PAY IT AND I HAD TO PAYDEDUCTABE ON AMBULANCE EMERGENCY ROOM AND TEST AND DOCTOR WHICH I HAVE NEVER HAD TO DO BEFORE AND VA SAID THAT NOW MEDICARE WAS MY MAIN PROVIDE. I DO NT GET ENOGHT TO LIVE ON WITH JUST DISABILITY CHECKZ SOI WHY THE CHANGE SINCE I HAVE HAD MEDICARE SINCE 2013 AND THEY NEVER REFUSED UNTIL 2018 AND I HAD NO CHOICE SINCE I WAS NOT ABLE TO RESPOND. The VA has not implemented the expansion pre-911 caregiver assistance that was passed into law by the Mission Act. Vietnam veterans and other pre-911 veterans are not getting the assistance they have earned. Will veterans receive retroactive benefits when the program is implemented and what can be done today? No matter what reasons are given for the delay, the VA has known for years their caregiver program IT software needed to be updated. They have failed to do so in a timely matter.

Why is dental care only available to former POWs and not all Veterans? Dental health is just as important as basic health but also expensive. When a veteran is unable to afford even basic dental care, it seems to me the VA should make more of an effort to help those vets out.

I now have a mark on my credit from a bill the VA has not paid. I was sent off campus almost 3 years ago for a procedure. After months of back and forth to VA to see Director only to see Ms Wanda as usual, the doctor was paid but not the hospital. I have spent countless hours caught in the phone system only to not accomplish anything. If I had been paid just $5 an hour for all the time I have spent trying to get the bills paid, I could have paid the bills for the last procedure and the next. Oh, my next colonoscopy was supposed to be in 3 years. Think I want to endure all this and additional hits to my credit?!!!??? Everyone has passed the buck except whoever was supposed to pass the bucks from the VA to off campus to pay bills.

as you can see from my records, i was in the army, Vietnam, in the 801st / ist brigade/ 101st airborne Div in 1967-68. I receive agent orange disability from the military, for my service there, of 428.00 $ approximately a month. I now reside in Toronto Ontario and am a paralyzed from T-12 down complete, as diagnosed by the VA in Palo Alto where I was placed for almost 3 months and received 3 operations (I received an operation at Domican Hospital as well). My question is why isnt there health care beyond what i was provided at Palo Alto, as I required . The only place where I could get further health care was Canada where I was admitted to Lynhurst Rehab Centre for my condition for 2 and one-half months where I learned how transfer etc. Because I taught up in Canada for 34 years after VN service I had health care provided even though I was living in California for 10 years. I was given many years of excellent health care by the VA in the Palo Alto VA but they did not provide health care when I really needed it. And they sent me to Canada where I would get the health care required for me at Lynhurst Hospital. Is this any way to treat an Vietnam war veteran?

Hello: Military veterans are exposed to many unique duties that create complex and overlapping injuries and illnesses beyond but sometimes parallel to civilian situations. 2 that come to mind are CTE Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and Neuropathy. The first seems to be pretty much ignored by the VA and the 2nd seems to only get treatment to mask the symptoms such as cymbalta which only allows it to continue to get worse with less recognition. Why are some of the newer and unique treatments to reverse Neuopathy not recognized by the VA and available to veterans since reversing the damage could save millions on continued RX masking and eventual falls, amputations etc. and allow a much better quality of life? And secondly when will the multiple concussive brain injuries be recognized as a serious and crippling disability and some of the excellent new treatments and realistic compensation for these ailments be addressed?

I have been informed that I live 39.5 miles from the VAMC in Martinsburg,WV. So don't qualify for the Choise Program. I used to work near the VAMC years ago and the shortest route I found was 72 miles. I don't see how they got 39.5 miles out of 72 miles. Short of disqualifying me to keep it under 40 miles.

The VA is notorious for not wanting feedback, (try to ask a question that no one knows the answer to, there’s no way to do so), so this new push for two way communication is great. Rallypoint is a good start.

1) Why doesn’t the VA fund human rollout of the MISSION Act? The VAMC Prescott held a meeting in a tiny room here in Lake Havasu City. I walked in, and it was standing room only, so I walked right back out.
When I asked if there were other events scheduled, I was told that the VA didn’t fund rollout, that the DAV had to find a free room, not the VA, so if I could find a free room she’d be happy to do it again in a larger venue.
She said no one else said anything, and I asked her about tunnel rats, and other people with difficulties in being in crowded rooms, folks like me that self selected and so she never has any contact with them. Crickets.
They stopped sending information mailers because they cost $3,000, and, “(Veterans) would just throw them away”. Rural Arizona is vast, and many homes are off grid, so I asked her about that again. Crickets again. It’s like city dwellers can’t fathom what life is like out here, and don’t care to.
I can’t talk on the phone, so she insists that I do.
And 20 Veterans a day die by their own hand while this goes on.
The doctors at Prescott are great, admin is very lacking.
Can you please fund actual help, and please don’t use the patient advocate, they are part of that administration, and the tip of the spear in, “sorry, not my job”, “it’s not our fault”, advocacy? Maybe go back to Congress and say, “Oops, we forgot to fund this part, we didn’t anticipate that there would be this much interest”, I don’t know.

2) The VA talks a great game about mental health, but don’t actually have the services they advertised. “Same day” services consist of the suicide hotline. I had a low point back in March, asked for help, but you have to talk on the phone. I finally got through via typing, but since I wasn’t interested in suicide, I became less, I don’t know, maybe interesting, or whatever, but it was obvious that she had other things to do.
I talked to Prescott MH (only during normal business hours, they have an answering machine for night and weekend crises), and asked for mental health Community Care. That was in March. They say they’re working on it, don’t know what happened to it, etc. I understand that your first question will be if I know about the Vet Center. Yes, but there’s a long backstory, i was attacked there, I can’t go there anymore.
Oh, and if the counselor that they choose isn’t compatible, I have to restart the entire process, they can’t do a backup. I’l fall into the crack and might not even try again.
So I wait for a counselor.
Can you please help with getting a Community Care counselor?

3) Do I have a copay? I’m 100% U/I, never had a copay before, but the VA stresses that there’ll be a copay without saying for whom, but no one can answer the question.

4) I got hurt in June of 2018, my back and hips. It takes months to get an X-ray, I need a consult for each hip individually, and my back, all as separate entities, no way to get into a doctor and have him see what needs done, because there’s no authorization for the problem as a whole. I see one doctor for my left hip, another one for my back, and now there’s a new consult hopefully floating around out there for my right hip. It’s ridiculous. Can you please set up so the Community Care can cover more than one body part at a time?

(Edit) My NP called, we apparently don’t have any doctors here that treat both back and hips, but they’re getting me in with the same hip doctor as my left hip. My team is very good, very responsive, I sent a message via myhealthyvet and she called me.

My concern is why the VA-Health Benefit Policy differ/discriminate against veterans that receive less disability percentage than those that have 80 percent and higher for healthcare and dental plan.
Due to my injury condition and by taking all types of medication have caused my teeth to decay. Also had oral surgery to remove broken teeth from my gum which was very costly. I have contacted our local Veteran-Agencies in and around my location, they just pass me on to someone else. I pray you can help me because I don’t know what else to do.
Please assist me with the assurance of how/whom I can contact at the VA to cover the dental cost needed to complete this procedure. I cannot afford a dental plan with the amount of benefits I am receiving from the VA along with the disability I receive from Social Security due to cost of living.

My husband is 77 and we just go wherever we want to and Medicare and his supplemental insurance pays for it in those cases. Are we doing something wrong?

I am dealing with my father, a WWII veteran who is 102 and very active...and my mother who is 97 and has moderate dementia to the point she cannot be safely left at home for more than an hour or two, if that (due to leaving doors unlocked or opening to strangers). I am the only family, the caregiver, and 60+ and must continue, especially as a single person, to work to ensure my own well-being and retirement. I also want to avoid institutional placement. I realize there is an aid program once the veteran has passed which may be of some help, but want to know if one can start the paperwork so there is not a delay in getting assistance when the time regrettably comes. I also would like to preserve the assets my father worked so hard to acquire for their benefit and well-being but think there is only so much allowed to qualify for the VA program, is that true?

The old community company was replace and the New one Tri West is worst. They have a fancy phone system but they just hang on you or send you a letter saying that they are trying to communicate with you. I have only praise for VA Health Care up here in the Upper Peninsula. However getting to the Clinic in Sault Ste Marie or Manistique is sometime very Hard in the Winter Month. 45 miles to Manistique and nearly a 100 to Sault Ste Marie -- where my Primary Care is located. Been a VA patient since 1968. While I appreciate all the new programs to help my fellow veterans who have served subsequently to me, I do NOT understand WHY, WHY, WHY there has NEVER, EVER, never, ever been strides to improve "communication" issues which exist to this day not only between the VA caretakers and vets BUT ALSO between VA departments. Specifically, the Health & Eligibility Center in Atlanta, my local VA in Wichita, KS can't agree on my co-pay status. Finally, in 2014 and in 2017 I participated in surveys for both the Chicago and Ann Arbor offices regarding VA clinic care and NEVER was provided the results of the surveys. In 2012 & 2016, our Wichita VA facility was investigated by the OIG for discrepancies in veteran care which resulted in the death of at least one veteran. SO I ASK AGAIN: WHY, why are issues as this not being taken more seriously and addressed? Thank you!

Dr. Matthews, how can an doctor or other professional health care givers become part of the VA Network? My area has only one non-urgent care center in network, and it is over 30 mile away. I have one with in 10 and several in two town under 20 mile. My VAMC does not have walk-ins but is starting to provide video visits to veterans. I know of several providers that would love to gain access to VA Network.

Why are some clinics run by nonqualified practitioners? I “ see” the pain clinic in Leeds,Ma the doctor who runs the clinic is certified in Internal Medicine. Now I’m not blaming him for trying, I am however wondering why we cannot be seen by civilian clinics. I placed see in parentheses due to the fact I am only seen every two years(ish).
I have nerve damage and other issues due to being blown up by a grenade (not recommended btw) Civilians are seen by doctors who are board certified within their specialty, VA clinics seem to be run by whoever is available or closest to the needs of that clinic.

why do we still have the 40 mile limit, this is not right, i have to go to the Slidell LA. clinic for my needs its 27 miles away. but if i have to see a specialist i have to drive to New Orleans witch is 70 miles from my home. so i have to get permission to see a specials in my area every time i need one. i also have to cross State lines to go to the Slidell clinic, i live in Mississippi and it is the closest to my house.

One reason for soldier/veteran suicides very well could be watching the old children in Congress act like idiots. One can think of all the guys that have been wounded and all who have died, and for what? Just so politicians can try to instill Communism in America??!!
I believe Congress is a vital reason many veterans commit suicide.

I was told it would take upwards to 6-9 weeks BEFORE I can get approved to use Community Care.
I have to travel for specialty clinics in Gainsville, FL which is 60 miles one way. It is very taxing to me physically to travel the 120 miles round trip from the VA Jacksonville, FL clinic and even though I have request many times the VA tells me I do not have a choice and can not get a referral to use community care. Why is Community care suppose to help when the Vet can't get referral to use? What are the guide lines (60+ miles one way from home) in order to use? To much run around no answer!

In designing the Community Care option, did you address tthe requirement that disabled veterans who also carry private health insurance through their employer, which benefits the VA when the veteran utilizes a VA facility, now have to pay the costs of a visit to the Community Care facility themselves if they have not met the deductible of the private health insurance policy. While the VA would cover 100% of the cost if the disabled veteran went to a VA facility, the VA has refused to pay any costs not covered by the private policy due to minimum deductible limits. This leaves the disabled veteran responsible for those costs. If this has not been addressed under the new program, many veterans are in for a rude awakening should they utilize the Community Care option.

As an honorably discharged veteran of the Vietnam Era ('62-'66) I was eligible to have VA Healthcare Benefits, but I declined because I was healthy and had company-provided insurance. I had a great admiration for those who had been in combat situations and who needed medical care. We have ALWAYS underfunded VA health care. I surmised that I would use it if I ever needed it. Laws passed in 2004 eliminated my ability to ever have VA healthcare as long as I am financially secure. Will I be able to secure Community Healthcare even if I am financially secure? How can I approach the Congress to extend the VA Healthcare benefits to ALL veterans?

Hello Dr. Matthews; I live in Tucson, AZso I go tothe Southern Arizona Veterans Hosoital for all my medical needs. I recently started attending a monthly LGBTQ Support Meeting there at the hospital. I have also noticed a $15.00 charge when I get a bill for my meds. This last bill billed me for this charge on a day I had no appointment but they listed it on the bill for outpatient care. Is this charge of $15.00 dollar charge for the monthly LGBTQ meetings?

I have had medical health insurance from former civilian employers and in rec ent years, through my wife's employment. I'd like to know if my VA benefits. At the VA hospital in Atlanta is very easy to miss an appointment due to the lack of parking and that parking lot is not properly patrolled. people park any where blocking driving lanes, there will be an accident soon. Making it more likely one will be late or miss an appointment.

Whom do I contact within the VA system? Wanting to know what personnel handles questions. ei: What doctors and testing is covered by the VA. I am needing x-rays, surgeries, psychologist appointments. My VA hospital is over 2.5 hours away.
Also I have Medical Bills on my credit. I was told a representative not to pay these bills. The companies are just looking for more money. The VA approved me to go to these doctors and procedures. Now I have 3 bills on my credit history.

What are the qualifications for having a primary care doctor though the new Community Care choice act? My doctor is leaving and the local clinic said I could not make an appointment. The clinic is so overwhelmed they are not providing me with the care I need. I also have at least two medical bills on my credit report that were originally authorized by the VA for care, and apparently the VA did not pay it and now my credit is destroyed. How can I get the VA to pay the balance so my credit is restored? There are major problems with my local VA clinic and nothing ever changes no matter how much the veterans complain.

I moved back to my hometown in 2010 and started using the local VA clinic which is part of the West Texas VA. In the last nine years I’ve had at least five or six different primary care doctors, now I have been told my current primary care doctor is leaving, and because of this I was told I could not make an appointment. When I started using this clinic almost nine years ago I have been complaining of neck and head problems which have progressively gotten worse. Finally, about six months ago, a radiologist and physical therapy technician, (not the primary care doctor) found what is causing my problems. Finally having a diagnosis I thought I would get the help I’ve been needing for so long, but here it is six months later and I still have not seen an ENT doctor about my condition despite asking for help on a regular basis. My question is; given the clinics inability to provide me with effective healthcare, and a secure effective primary care doctor, can I qualify for the use of a civilian primary care doctor under the new Community Care Act? The clinic has systemic, consistent problems that have not improved in almost a decade and needs the be put under a microscope. If I am having such problems I cannot imagine how my fellow Veterans with more serious problems are being affected. I asked for a Community Care primary doctor and was told, “No,” without any review of my circumstances whatsoever.

I work for a non-VA medical provider who is an orthopedic surgeon. We provide orthopedic care for veterans through the Patient-Centered Community Care (PC3) program, which works like a HMO insurance plan for civilians in that medical care must be authorized by the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) prior to being seen by a specialist. Within the scope of that authorization are numbers of authorized visits (generally not more than 3 visits for civilians and 6 visits for VA patients) as well as a valid period (generally not more than 3 months for civilians and one year for VA patients).

Overall, this is a great program for veterans (both retirees and non-retirees), as they pay nothing for prior authorized care, but I have one major concern.

It seems like a literal act of Congress when continued care is needed for our veteran patients that extends beyond the initial valid period of authorized care. If I send a request for additional services to the VA to extend the valid period of authorized care, it is never approved in a timely manner. I can even give as much as a 6-month lead-time, and yet will be told that my request is still pending approval. Compare that to civilian PCP’s. When I send a request for additional services to a civilian PCP, the average turnaround time is less than one week. Some will even have my request completed in less than 24 hours.

My question is will there be a fix for this. As of right now, I have several veteran patients who are in need of orthopedic care that extends beyond the valid period of their initial authorized care, but we cannot provide such care under the PC3 program because we are waiting on VA approval.

I meet two of the six criteria to make me eligible to see all of my private practitioners in my community. What do I have to provide the VA and my private doctors to begin setting appointments with my private practitioners with VA approval immediately?
I am a 100% Disabled American Veteran. My PTSD therapist has recommended that it is in my best interest that I am not treated medically by the VA for anything!

My Question: WHY, if a C&P Doc states in BLACK AND WHITE, that the Veteran is Unemployable due to the major disability issues does the local VA deny the claim. When the claim is asked to be reviewed by HIGHER AUTHORITY, why is the claim simply looked at by same level in a different state? Why is the request for HIGHER AUTHORITY denied? Why are medical records that show moderate to severe, AND WORSENING conditions denied as well? My VA PCD at the Fayetteville NC VAMC is putting in referrals to things for community care. I have never heard anything from anyone to schedule. I contacted the PCD and was told that tri-west is cancelling them. Is there some sort of process where vets can get notification of cancellation and also appeal why it was cancelled? My PCD has no idea. Ideally, an online process so Vets don’t have to take excessive time away from work during business hours to wait on hold with someone at a VA.

Why are woman vets turned away from dental treatment at Conroe V. A. I have a bone disease from radiation by the Robley Rex V.A. in Louisville, i went to the VA in Conroe Texas with bone protruding from my jaw, in pain. I have a disability rating due to my diabetes, Type 2 from agent orange exposure in Vietnam. Prior to receiving VA healthcare I began treatment under the care of my personal physician who prescribed medications that I am taken for many years to control my diabetes. The VA will not cover my medications which cost me approximately $5,000 per year. The VA has indicated that I must prove medications offered by them do not work before they would offer to cover my proven effective medications. Why do I have to take the physical risks of dropping a proven long term treatment to experiment with other options? Makes no personal health sense to take such risks. I could understand if my medications were experimental or where unique, but not to provide a medically accepted products as Janumet and Jardiance is unexplainable!

My biggest problem with VA is that they do NOT TALK OR CONNECT WITH DFAS!! Reason I say this is that I have been trying to get my pay my temp 100% and it was approved by VA and DFAS says they don't have nothing. Concerning full time students eligible for Champ VA, unlike the private sector this benefit ends at age 23. Additionally the process for verifying full time status can be frustrating and needs to be updated at least annually or sooner adding to the workload of the dependent student. The biggest concern arises should that student fall below full time status, at which point the medical coverage is immediately cut short with no allowable grace period to enable the student to obtain new coverage. This leaves college students in an extremely vulnerable position without health coverage. Is there any discussion of extending eligibility through age 26 or adding a coverage grace period? I am a 64-year-old veteran with 20 percent disability. The reason that I am writing to you is because I have a concern about the policy that the VA has against the thousands of veterans like myself about dentistry care which a veteran has to have eighty percent or more disability in order to receive free dental care. I have spoken to the VA about this matter and was told that I will have to buy my own dental insurance and to be truthful, I cannot afford to pay for it for I’m on Social Security, unable to work and on a strict income. Looking at the cost of dental insurance and what it covers can be overbearing with co pays and if you need surgery, the cost can be in the thousands. Sir, I have talked to many of veterans that are in the same shape that I’m in and the conversation always ends the same, “We cannot afford it”. It is true that the VA will Give me care from my toe to the top of my head regardless of what my problem may be, but when it comes to my teeth, I have to be eighty percent in order to get care. With my teeth becoming rotten and falling out, a simple smile is not something I can do. I believe that it is unfair to the thousands of veterans that are experiencing the same problems that I have without dental care from the VA which should be free to all honorable discharged veterans. Hello, I wanted to see about advice where to go from here. I have had nothing but issues with my VA community care. VA Palo Alto refuses to refill my meds for VA choice/community care, though the have before for the same doctor. Community Care in Menlo Park Palo Alto, the two guys are TERRIBLE and try to push everything on everyone else though it is their responsibility. I wrote a clinical appeal 2 weeks ago and havent heard anything back. I am trying o get them to renew my doctor visits and get the pharmacy to give me my meds. I am 90% service connected and they have been denying me needed medical services for years. It took them a whole year just to get me 10 visits for community care, when Im supposed to be seen every 2 weeks.

I have read through the Mission Act and I am wondering why Veterans always have to prove eligibility. If a Veteran is enrolled and eligible, why doesn't the nearest VA reach out the them and explain how the community care program works in their location. For example, why not send out a mailer with the urgent care facilities and providers who are already in VA network? It seems like the answer is always, "Call this number".

I'm a 100% permanent & total, service-connected disabled veteran, so I have dental benefits. I live in a rural town in GA that is 122 miles from the closest VA having dental services, that is the Atlanta VA.

1. Community Care was used in May 2018 to enable me to see a local dentist. Fantastic for me, but not for the local dentist. The VA still hasn't paid this dentist for my authorized exam, x-rays and cleaning on 07/06/2018. The dentist and I have tried several times per month since that date to get the AtlantA VA to pay this dentist. Atlanta VA Community Care employees for dental care do not answer their phones and do not return their voice messages. My VA dentist and her superior can't get anyone to respond either. The dentist has sent the treatment plan and billing statement by fax and by mail countless times. I've been in his office and watched the forms being sent. I know it's been done multiple times and correctly as required. How can I get the Atlanta VA to pay this dentist?

2. My VA dentist also submitted and her boss authorized 2019 Community Care dental care for me more than 1 month ago. Neither the dentist nor I have received any notice for scheduling an appointment. What can be done at the Atlanta VA to get the 2019 Community Care processed?

Also, my VA dentist submitted and her boss approved one week ago, an emergency Community Care request for an abscessed tooth that I developed. They did this immediately for me. However, neither the local dentist nor I have heard anything about scheduling this emergency appointment. What is not happening at the Atlanta VA?

3. For other Community Care needs that are not dental, the consults are being processed efficiently. Also, Tri-West representatives are outstanding--curteous, respectful, kind, most willing to help, and efficient.

4. I have the deepest gratitude to President Trump and the team he assembled to design and implement the Mission Act. It is a blessing. I can now have an appointment with a local cardiologist. It's taken 3 years of trying to get the Atlanta VA to approve local cardiology care for me--neither VA Choice nor Community Care would be approved for me by the Atlanta VA. I kept reporting my shortness of breath and the number of times I'd collapse and it was to no avail. I was told I'd have to go to Atlanta or I wouldn't get medical care. My condition has worsened to the point I can't walk to my mailbox without collapsing from shortness of breath. My wife can no longer get me up off the ground by herself. Neighbors must come to the rescue. So, if it weren't for the Mission Act, I'd never get cardiology care from the VA. (Recall that ATL is 122 miles from my home, I do not have transportation to get there and the Atlanta VA would not help. So, THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP! GOD BLESS YOU AND THE STAFF YOU CHOSE TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT THE MISSION ACT!!!!

5. Lastly, are there plans to ever reduce my 100% service-connected disability pay and benefits to me and for my spouse after I pass and she is widowed?

Thanks for taking our questions! I am a military brat who manages an Orthotic and Prosthetic company in a rural area. We WANT to serve our vets! We have been providers for the VA for years but the new Community Care portion of the VA.gov website does not show us as a provider. It shows other providers that are 60-90 miles away. I called someone in your office and they helped me get in touch with TriWest who said we were still in-net with the Certified Provider Program but that we have to start over and request to be in the PC3 network.

Here are my questions:
1. Why would they not transfer our information to/from TriWest to make it a smooth transition instead of leaving us off the website and making us register all over again? This benefits no one...especially the Vets!
2. The Vets in our area that have used us in the past WON'T go anywhere else. They want to see us and we care about them. We are attentive and do our best to provide the best for them in a timely manner. With that being said, what do they have to do when they want to come see us? Do they have to call someone to tell them that they are 80-90 miles away from the nearest VA facility? Do we, as the provider, need to call someone to tell them they should be eligible for CCN?
3. Who do Vets and Providers contact at the VA in order to get authorization for them to see and be eligible to see us in the CCN?

The last thing is that the Community Care Network should be more prominent on the VA website. It was difficult for myself and some of my colleagues to navigate the website as if we were veterans that were in our area trying to find a provider. It WAS NOT easy!

I know that this question is late, but can you set up something for those of us that can’t talk well on the phone? Deaf people have TTY, can people with messed up heads get a way to talk?

If you are advised by VA Medical Staff to go to Urgent Care. Call this number (833-4 VETNOW) to verify if you coded erroneously before going and being denied like I was. Also, if you have EVER been a VA Employee or Volunteer. Per the VA you are already in the same position I am. Though not an employee I was 40 years ago a volunteer, and applied again about 6 or 7 years ago. Not hearing back I dropped the issue. Now that I'm retired and having used the Veterans Choice program for the past 3 or so years. Three weeks ago I had to see my doctor. So I called the advice nurse, whom stated I needed to be seen with 2 to 8 hrs. Yet, there were NO same day appointments. The earliest wouldn't be until Monday the following week. Yet, (here's where it gets worse) the nurse says I'm eligible to go to Urgent Care. They give me the phone number locally. Wow the clinin is less than 1 mile. I go and check in, presenting my ID. The clerk says she needs to call to verify I'm eligible. I said the VA told me I am and to come here. See I'm also 100% Disabled. Getting ready to see their doctor. The clerk says sorry you were denied! That can not be. Still on the phone I speak with the TRICARE agent. Whom stated no as of May 27, 2019 my UC was coded with the expiration date. This started on July 23rd, 2019 at 0645. By 1600 I was called by a supervisor from TRICARE and the VA Advice Nurse in a conference call.
Told this would be fixed by the following day. That in the meantime they were advising me to seek care through the ER. Since the closest VA ER was 80 and 50 miles away.
Fast forward to today August 7, 2019. Still has not been corrected. I have filed complaints with White House Counsel, VA OIG and a Congressional. Since everytime I call either agency. I'm still on the Marry-go-round. VA points the finger at TRICARE and vise versa. Speaking with the Congressman office there seems to be 3 senereos. One I have to fix the date? WTF! 2. They are not sure how to merge these two files 3. My favorite Do not get sick.
As I told the Congressman office. My next contact will be with the News agency's.
Asked what do I do WHEN I am told to seek care at the UC clinic? Do i pay and get reimbursed? Go to the ER instead? Suck it up? This was their answer........I Don't know.
If this was a movie no one would believe it. But because it is the VA it can be understood that this is happening.
Well I really hope this helps. Its unfortunate that I had to be the one, but if it helps other in the end then it was worth the pain.
