In so many states the judges do not enforce the law when it comes to multiple offenders of people who drive when legally drunk. I have seen drunks kill people and get away with a slap on the wrist. There has to be a point where we all say ENOUGH! Only one Judge who did so much of this has ever been voted out of office in this area. More need to understand and enforce the law. It makes it very difficult for them to find legal employment, which pushes them toward either crime, or the welfare system, and they get trapped in a vicious cycle of social dependency.

I know a lot of people that USED to have drug/alcohol problems... I'd hate to see them without a way to get to work.

Talking about gun owner background checks... I'd like to see a "Do not own" list... do something to get on the list and you can't own one legally. Not on the list? Legal to own a 105mm if you so desire. He failed at the "killing himself" part. Was wildly successful at the "murder" part.

He was in his mid/late 20s when this occurred, and had been diagnosed with mental illness as a teenager. It was evident in the months prior, due to he peculiar paranoid behaviors he demonstrated he was no longer well, but he didn't say or do anything that would cause him to be involuntarily held by civilian authorities.

I note "civilian authorities", because a few months before he killed his wife, the Army held him over his 2 week Reserve AT under medical care, because, well, they recognized he was nuts. They were the only ones who could or would hold him, but after the AT, he was turned loose.

It's widely accepted he was mentally ill at the time he did this, but that doesn't mean he didn't know what he was doing. He served 2 years in prison for a reduced manslaughter charge and grievous bodily harm to the other driver. No one will ever know if he would have done that without being mentally ill, but it seems rather doubtful.
