It was actually a (now) good buddy of mine by the name of David Stradling. I worked in the local mall at a kiosk selling Refreshed shoe cleaner. He taught me not only how to sell a product, but how to communicate better with people. How to read people's body language and their willingness to buy/consider a product. But in addition to this, he also showed me ways to catch people' attention and how to confuse them just long enough for me to insert my opinion into their head and quickly get them to change their mind. I served under him again as a SPC, PFC and SPC again (he demoted and promoted me) when CPT Ferraro was the commander of the 353rd PSYOP CO (R&A).

I served under him a third time as a 2LT (he pinned my direct-commission butter bar) when MAJ Ferraro was the S3 at 7th PSYOP Group. He retired a few years later as an LTC, and was one of the most important mentors and role models of my military career.

I really need to look him and buy him a beer sometime.

I would give an extremely honorable mention to SFC Scott French, who served under me at the 729th Transportation Company. I was the company commander, but knew nothing about trucks or transportation. As the Truck Master for the company, SFC French was a trusted advisor who helped me address issues in the unit, raise morale and improve our mission readiness. Following his advise, I got licensed on the M915 (as commander I was supposed to ride in a Humvee with a driver) and drove every leg of every convoy I was present for. I think that by the end of my two year assignment I'd become a very capable transportation officer despite not having the MOS, and I owe most of it to the patience, knowledge and mentorship of SFC French.

Also as commander of the 729th TC, SGT Melissa Aranda (now Neal, congratulations SGT) was another mentor. While she was almost 20 years younger than me, I recognized in SGT Aranda a very strong and capable leader who took care of her soldiers and was both wise and competent far beyond her grade. She was an outstanding squad leader, later a platoon SGT (despite not being the highest ranking NCO in the platoon) and along with SFC French always gave valuable counsel.

I like to think that I have my own leadership style, but the vast majority of it is an amalgamation of what I learned from LTC Ferraro, SFC French, SGT Aranda and many other officers and NCOs I've had the pleasure (and sometimes misfortune) to serve with over the years.

Finally, there were a few very poor (in my opinion) officers and NCOs who also must be considered great mentors in teaching me what not to do, and how not to be. I won't name any, but there is a Lieutenant Colonel whom on two occasions I had the wisdom and confidence to push back on when he gave unnecessarily dangerous orders without a valid justification to do so. Not only did higher back me up, but I even had the great pleasure to chew him out (not in front of the troops). I was a PFC on Rear D providing support to my unit who were just returning from Iraq. I was just standing there in a back area looking at a map when he approached me and started making conversation. His wealth of knowledge blew me away. The conversation maybe lasted two minutes tops but in that short amount of time I knew all I needed to know to be certain that if there were anyone who represented the idealized version of the Army I had, it was him. He gave off the aura of those movie type Army Leaders. Confident, rugged, and inspiring. Honestly I could gush so much about him but what it comes down to was that I based every bit of Leadership I could have gleamed from experience on my time serving under him.

I was a mere private and he took the time to integrate me into the unit I was soon to be apart of better than any sponsor I've ever had in my entire military career. And this was all immediately after getting off a plane coming out of theater. It was the idea of Leaders like him that made me love the service. It was because of everything I learned from him that I was able to push myself to give just that much more for my Soldiers. To push that much further in support of my Leadership. He set the bar so high and gave me hope because he wasn't perfect. In fact, the only reason he was a Staff Sergeant was because he lost his rank. He took a hit defending a Soldier of his. I doubt I'll ever know the full details of that story but he was the type where you wouldn't doubt it.

I wonder what ever happened to him. I don't have any contacts with anyone who knew him and I didn't become proficient with the enterprise system till well after leaving that duty station. He was already getting up there so I'd imagine he's retired by now but then as stubborn as he was, perhaps he's still sticking in somewhere. He built a sense of pride in my branch, in my unit, in the Army for me and I owe him so much for it. Everything for it. His influence is the reason why I'll work 110% till my day, to my last second in service. I’d had separated from active duty about two rears prior and recently joined the active reserves. I’d been reclassified from engineering aid to Jr. Draftsman and assigned to a design group tasked to design a portion of a unit within a refinery located in Mexico. My lead designer and supervisor was Brian Nutley, a Brit who took me under his wing and gave me challinging assignments in all phases of the design process. He recommended me to Sr. Management to attend company run design classes. He encouraged me by showing me how to layout orthographic plans and sections, and tutored me on how to transpose demensions from English to metric. He introduced me to simple geometric formulas used to calculate compoud angles needed to draw isometric and spool piping drawings. He recommended I be classified as Sr. Draftsman and continued to give me more responsibilities in the design process working with Sr. Designers. He encouraged me to keep honing my skills. I was eventually placed in the position of checker. He eventually quit the company to become a Sr. design supervisor for another company and called me up and offered me a job as a designer at a substantial increase in salary. He inferred that I was a good piping designer and continued to give me challinging assignments. , He gave me the most positive input of any person I ever worked for. His style of managing people set an example for me on how I would eventually treat those who would work for me. Unfortunately I lost track of him and his family many years ago. General Paul W. Myers, who became the AF Surgeon General. We remained friends even after I was discharged. He invited me to his office in D.C. as my former commander and friend. He has passed away, but I still remember his “open-door policy” which afforded me the opportunity to discuss hospital matters with him at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas during my war and peacetime years.
