The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a U.S. based allowance prescribed by geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. It provides uniformed Service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the United States when government quarters are not provided.

Why should dual military couples receive a higher benefit when they maintain ONE household?

This is a long overdue change that will save millions of defense dollars.

Makes no sense at all. So I can't receive the full benifits because my wife is serving?

I have a buddy whoe's wife is a civilian and earns more than he does. Will they take his BAH? Or does he get to keep the full amount because his wife is not military? Seems a little unfair...

I'm dual military and under the total compensation, that is my entitlement not my husbands. They don't estimate how much I actually get paid based on what we make but what I make.

I can see it now, take away my BAH and let's see if they military will finally realize I am underpaid.

If we want to talk about fairness with housing, let's address the fact that despite having a higher housing allowance (since we collect both), due to rank we can't get preferred housing (OCONUS). What other job do you know spend more time focusing on your dependents rather than the employee.

I'm sorry, but I wake up just as early as my husband, deploy just like my husband, make those sacrifices just like my husband and I earn that BAH just like my husband so stop looking at my household. I come to work for you, you pay me for that work and I go home.

Minimizing my benefits better include a substantial increase in pay. Better yet, since we seem to be going more corporate, take away these benefits, pay me what I am actually worth and I will handle my family.

In the mean time while they figure it out, I will keep my dual BAHs. I earned it.

Oh I got it now. So your concern with rank and not about the fact that regardless of rank dual military provided twice the man power as one Soldier. So the fact that we deployed twice over and we do the work twice over and most importantly we make the sacrifices twice over that because of our rank we should not have a compensation because we are not a MSgt. With all due respect when one MSgt provide twice the contributions that that Private's Dual family make then maybe this would be a debate worth having.

People seem to be leaning on this incredibly petty argument of "you don't deserve a bigger, better house than me." First of all, that has nothing to do with this argument. I haven't seen a single person on here that is dual military say "yeah we should both get BAH because of the fact that there are two of us means we deserve a house that is twice as nice." Second, let me offer this piece of information; the house I purchased as single Senior Airman (E-4) is bigger, with more bedrooms, and larger yard and garage than the house I am currently renting with my wife.

So you know what, why not take it a step further. How about the DoD just implements a policy that regardless of whether or not your spouse is military or civilian; if your spouse's income is greater than whatever pre-designated amount to be chosen, that means your paycheck gets a certain percentage removed before you ever see it.

That will solve this. Hey everyone, if your spouse makes more than $80,000 a year, your paycheck gets cut in half. No it doesn't matter if they civilian or DoD, they make a good amount of money to support your family so you don't need your full paycheck. Plus, we can't have you living in a better house than that guy over there. That wouldn't be fair.

In fact, now that I think about it, isn't that a bit communist?

Regardless of job or experience, or how much everyone in your household contributes to society, or the fact that you are your own person living your own life making your own decisions and earning your own way. The fact of the matter is, everybody gets the same house and the same car and the same clothes. We can't have anyone living a better life than anyone else. Otherwise your neighbor over there may have something to complain about.

MSgt (Join to see) - That is the opposite of my logic Sir. The argument you're making is right in line with my counter argument of: Regardless of whether or not military members in the same house are married, they all serve, they all wake up just as early, they work just as hard, they deploy just as much. How would it be right to say that only of them in that house (even there are four or five single members) received BAH because they are all living in the same house and only need one? Also, it really seems more like you just don't want people to something you don't. A bigger house? Really?

And yes, you do work just as me, deploy just as much as me, wake up just as early as me. You know who else does too? My wife. But I guess she hasn't earned her paycheck. She doesn't deserve the same compensation for doing the same job.

As usual Congress sticking its nose where it isn't wanted. Dear congress, please cut your excessive benefits before trying to cut the benefits of others. Get your house is in order FIRST before condemning others in their house.

They would find a way to justify it @Tsgt Smallwood Chaise, because it's THEIR salary & benefits and not some anonymous SMs.

Because of stuff like this, I think there should be something stating that when congress is creating the budget for the year that paying themselves should be the last thing accomplished. They don't want to go unpaid, can guarantee if they were looking at having to work for free, even for a day, another government shutdown would never occur again. They would figure out a way to get along and make the budget happen, even if it meant locking themselves in a room together for a week straight. Besides, this is their job. Why should we pay them before they have completed the job?

Not stating I'm for or against this amendment to the bill or McCain, but the bill is the National Defense Authorization Act of FY 2016. This means this includes authorization for our entire military, projects, compensation. McCain is the chairman of the senate armed services committee. This is the same act that includes the retirement changes, our cola pay raise, and major military projects.

Sgt Gus Laskaris -

Wanna take a jab at wasteful spending? Just take a look at the Government Purchase card program. Go look at a GSA Catalogue. Thats YOUR taxpayer dollars going to pay $10 for a box of staples. The DoD is FORCED to pay absurdly high prices for EVERYTHING. Seriously, I can get a box of staples for $1.99 at Staples (no pun intended).

I have a thread about it if you wanna weigh in ( its very small, and looks like no-one really cares about it at all, which i think is part of the problem).
