dual status military technicians?

I'm an infantryman in the guard, but recently boarded for a position as a dual status military technician in a support role outside my mos. The job I would be doing is actually a supply position, but computers and logistics are a key part of my college degree. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me to some of the benefits and pros and con's of the technician program. I applied without looking to much into it, just because I've been a bit on the desperate side finding a full time job, and I was pleasantly surprised when I was actually invited to board for the position.

Just as with any position or job within the military whether active or guard/reserve there are both benefits and drawbacks, the most important thing, with all the guard/reserve and veterans/retirees looking for work, even if it is not what you wanted to be in, it is allowing you to get your foot in the door.

In most cases that is all you need, once you are in, if you find other positions later on that are open or available in the field you desire, you will have an advantage over others as you are already in the system. Take it for what it is worth, you are getting a steady paycheck, go with the flow and enjoy it while it is there and not being cut.

Good luck and like I said make the most of it as you can, make the connections and go from there.

I was a Army National Guard Tech., for sixteen years in California. My education and prior experience meant nothing to a promotion in the unit, or during fulltime employment! Politics meant everything! If you were a combat vet., such as myself, you were subjected to discrimination on the job, and during drills. High school dropouts who went to military schools received one point per day for school attendance. I attended college and received 120 points for my (4 year degree) efforts. This, in my eyes was wrong!! During my time, I was in a union, you had to be in one, to protect your job!! I finally resigned, then moved on with my life!! Think it over long and hard, it's like selling your soul to the devil!

When your ets comes up and they want to get rid of you, they can manipulate your annual performance ratings to justify not allowing you to renlist. This can happen in the unit and on the job!! You are fired!!

I'm not sure what "voting down", my comment means? My prior regular Army experience, especially my war record!! I spent nineteen and one half months in Vietnam. My decorations: Distinguished Flying Cross (Hue', 1968) Air medal w/8 Oak leaf clusters, Commendation Medal, Good conduct, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry/1st class, I'm also a veteran of the first Gulf War-Desert Storm. This is a testament to my character!! I told the truth involving my experience as a military Tech. When I worked as a Federal Tech., we were accepted Federal civil service employees. If someone votes me down that's not an officer, I would be concernded. After all, officers are part of management or mismanagement, however you may look at it!! Being a union member, meant legal(expert attorney's) job protection

I was a dual status technician in the KYARNG for two years before I came on active duty. The technician program is ok, but generally pays lower starting off than an active duty equivalent. It is harder to save up leave days due to the amount you get starting off, unless you have Title 10 active duty before you come in the program.

The tech program is not as good as AGR or going active duty. Tech you retire at 25 or 30 years but can’t draw an allotment till minimum age of 55, 57, 58 depends on your MRA. When you retire from AGR or active you draw in 30 days from the day your terminal leave ends. So if you are going to spend the time, why not do it in such a way you can draw a retirement and still be young to retire at another job. Fellow technician 27 years.

Need a job, that must come first. Once that stress is out of the way you can move forward on planning your future. All most all jobs are stepping stones to green pastures.
