During your deployment, how far in advance did you begin your search for employment before going home? Any strategies/advice for efficiency?

I'm NG and would like to be able to step into a new job as soon as possible after returning home. Any suggestions, advice, stories, or strategies you have found helpful is appreciated.

Networking is normally what gets most people into jobs. I would stay out of job boards. I would say from starting my transition from Egypt, work on your LinkedIn profile from your deployed locations, connect and arrange for coffee meetings (Informational Interviews). You can also freelance your skills on upwork.com both part time or full time.

I appreciate the insight, sir, I haven't heard of upwork before and have been resisting LinkedIn. I imagine its time to go ahead and put some effort into the online presence side of job searching.

Why not start now? It's never too early to look for something within your career field. With communication, let them know you are deployed ATT and upon returning, you can schedule a meeting/interview for the position.
Best of luck!

It's a little far out for me to be able to convince a firm I'm worth the wait! No reason to wait 6+ months when someone equally qualified will walk in the door the next day. I'm just not sure when the best "foot in the door" time period is going to fall!

I see your point. I would probably look into a position 30-60 days out, given with the time period of getting yourself back home and getting ready for the interview process.

SFC Smith, what exactly do you mean? As of right now my job search has mainly been observational and research based, just to see what types of firms are hiring most in my target area. I'm just unsure as to when it's appropriate to begin contacting any employers.
