Dyess AFB allows partial conceal carry on base

12/3/2015 - DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Changes to the Dyess Force Protection Plan, signed and approved by Col. David Benson, 7th Bomb Wing commander, now permits authorized personnel that possess a current and valid Texas Concealed Handgun License or a reciprocating state concealed carry license to transport and secure privately-owned handguns in privately-owned vehicles within legal boundaries of Dyess Air Force Base.

"While this policy change does not allow concealed carry on base, it does allow those who carry concealed weapons to transport them onto and off the base in their vehicles," said Col. David Benson, 7th Bomb Wing commander. "This provides a safe and secure way to bring their weapons on base."

I would take that here (Tyndall), as I'm not as concerned about something happening on base as I am on my commute to and from work.

All this really allows you to do is carry off base and then secure your gun in a case/compartment before driving onto the base so you can have it in your car when you leave base again. It in no way allows you to actually carry since it must be secured at all times and may not be removed from the vehicle. It makes people's lives easier if they live off base but doesn't really affect anything else.

Ah man, Colonel Benson makes me miss him already.

I really hope that other Wing Commanders follow in this. A lot of people talk about wanting to carry while on duty on base but that isn't even slightly a concern for me. For me I just want to be able to protect myself to and from work. There is about a twenty minute 15-20 mile drive from where I live off base to the base gates and it takes roads that are known to be used by service members to get to and from base. I am not saying I ever expect to get attacked but if someone wanted to do it then it wouldn't be hard along those roads. I'd love to be able to carry to and from base but I would have to go straight to the SF armory the moment I entered base and would have to go back once I am done with work. As it stands it isn't worth the hassle. The rules Col. Benson is implementing would make it so much easier for those of us who live off base to carry for protection. I really hope other Wing Kings follow suit with this.

As a side note, Aftermarket vehicle gun safes are widely available online. Weapons are commonly stolen from vehicles. Id feel horrible if my POW was stolen from my Jeep and used in a crime of any sort.

TSgt Joshua Copeland Take it for what its worth, but I got this in an email at work today:

"On 3 Dec 15 HQ AF A4S signed Interim Change (IC) 3 to AFI 31-101. Once this IC is published through AF publication it will become effective (usually 30-60 days). IC 3 allows for the Concealed Carry (CC) of Privately Owned Firearms (POFs) on ALL AF Installations for ALL (not just AF LEOSA Credentials) credential holders who are authorized base access. It does not automatically allow for CC in government facilities which means you will not be allowed to take your weapon out of your vehicle. It further stipulates that the Installation Commander can allow Concealed Carry of POFs in government facilities but must identify those facilities where CC is not authorized and mark those facilities accordingly."

I can't find/get a copy of IC 3 to AFI-31-101 anywhere, but if this is the change, this must have been the rationale that the Dyess CC used to update their FPP. I don't know how they could have authorized the change otherwise.

Totally Agree, in Ohio if you are veteran, conceal carry permits are issued with NO CHARGE. A great deal for veterans.
God Bless all military service Personnel, VETERANS, Police, and first responders, They DO THE JOB, that no one else wants to do. Praise them all, AND if you see these people on the street,
