This article highlights many issues that require more thought and discussion. Although different in many ways from ISIS, the Sinai's militants are gathering under their umbrella. The social status or name recognition that ISIS commands brings relevance to many groups. With this kind of group growing in membership and influence in their region I see no reason we cannot consider this an insurgency.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs These groups have existing for many years. They were active when I was at MFO in 2006 and attacked the Egyptian Army in the Sinai.

The bottom line is, we must fight Islamic Extremist until they have lost all hope and crush it just like Nazism and other extremist groups. If you remember Sadat, then the President of Egypt was killed in 1981 by the same extremist the later attacked the world trade center.

Saddam Thought his weapons would kill any and everybody in his patc. Compared to ours, which has improved, he might as well have had a BB gun. ISIS and the insurgents arms will continue to grow as long as we let them grow. The thing that irks me is all of this double talk from our POTUS and those who follow him. While we sit idly by, ISIS continues to spread out, and grow. With our intelligence, and other countries who claim to an ally of ours, intelligence, it seems to me there would be enough information to crush ISIS.

I would not consider ISIS to be the source of an insurgency in the traditional sense of insurgency which tends to be focused on internal issues within one nation COL Mikel J. Burroughs. Insurgencies tend to capitalize on internal governmental weaknesses which strike common interests.
ISIS's actions are more closely related to crime family turf battles and alliances formed for expediency's sake. ISIS claims to focus on establishing the Caliphate which is transnational. On a more practical level ISIS consists of thugs, executioners, black marketeers and money launderers, and social media manipulators.

There will always be disaffected youth with Revolutionary Ideals (Sometimes Religious) that are easy Prey for Propaganda and ISIS's Propaganda is very good from what I hear. They are very Technology Savvy and they are going to use it against anyone that doesn't measure up to their Ideal of what a Muslim should be.

ISIS is a problem and should have been dealt with swiftly and violently long ago.
