Ending your Term of Service during a upcoming deployment?

I have come to find a soldier that is will ETS in about a year and half. But their unit is about to deploy next year. This will leave them with an ETS date during their deployment. Now the deployment is a 9 month deployment and their ETS date would fall in the eighth month.

Would the soldier still be required to deploy? Mainly would they get stop-lossed for that one month, get sent home early, or would they have an option of ETSing early? I haven't dealt with this in a long time. I was stop-lossed but that was a long time ago. With the Army down sizing would there be any other Options?

On the USMC side, we tend to assign units based on expected EAS (ETS) dates. As an example, I joined 1 Aug 1994, with an original EAS of 31 July, 1999 (5 year contract). After MOS school, I went to 3rd Bn, 1st Marines (3/1 or BLT 3/1 depending on the deployment timeframe). I arrived to 1st Marines immediately prior to their return (they were delayed because of Somalia). Based on my EAS, I would deploy TWICE with them, and EAS about 8~ months after return (had I not reenlisted).

Most of the Infantry (and anyone else with a 4 year contract) in my unit were in a similar position. They however got there at the beginning of the "work up cycle" as opposed to the "Post Deployment cycle." So about 6 months after I got there, and they would EAS about 3~ months after returning home (from second deployment).

There were a few exceptions, but not many. The couple notable ones were an Admin Clerk who didn't have enough time to make a second deployment with us. So they just had him PCA (permanent change of assignment) to another BN so he could go with them instead, as they were 6 months ahead of us on rotation. He could have been swapped to one in Regiment if needed though.

As for Stop-Loss, this was before that era. I was actually on terminal when Stop-loss came out (didn't apply to me), but that's likely a "Big Army" call (it was for the USMC in 2002), as opposed to a Local Command decision. I'd hazard a guess, they'll just swap the person for another similarly MOS'd person on base, as that is the simplest solution.

That would depend entirely on the Soldiers command. If they feel his MOS and presence is critical to the mission, they may have him extended to meet the deployment mission. If they feel he is not, then he would stay back in the Rear D and ETS without a care. But, does the Soldier want to deploy?

I deployed in 2014 as a filler to a unit that was below strength. Everyone in that company whose ETS date was during deployment stayed back as part of rear det until ETS.

I am the CUOPS officer with a unit deploying in the next 3 months, the answer is no, they will no longer waiver you through the old DESP process. You now must extend through 90 days after the deployment.

No more stop-loss...if qualified, the Soldier will be coded with an IMREPR code of '11' and give a few weeks to reenlist; if Soldier does not reenlist, the Soldier's ETS will be updated to within 90-180 days.

My wife would hate me for saying this but I love deploying. There is no time I feel that my actions are more meaningful and my purpose more relevant to supporting our mission. I love the bond I have with those who serve with me. Deployment is special to me and I jump at every opportunity.

CPT Private RallyPoint Member Sir I had that situation happen to me. Since there is no more Stop-Loss they what is call DSIP, I believe its called. They can extend up to 6 months I believe and get an extra $500 a month.
