Everyone keeps telling me that I'm going to be disqualified for having only one kidney...so when does this disqualification come?

Yeah, I know, you've all told me that I'm never going to get into any branch of the military with only one kidney. The Army has already disqualified me and now I'm in the middle of trying to enlist in the Air Force. People keep telling me that I have no chance of joining, but I'm making more progress than you've all expected. My recruiter has my medical papers and he knows all about my one kidney. And yet, he didn't turn me down and give me an automatic disqualification. He said I can go take the ASVAB, which I took today and scored a 94 on, and then he said that he'll send my scores down to be looked at so that I can be considered for MEPS.

So....when does this so-called "automatic disqualification" show up, because I ain't seeing it. I took the ASVAB, scored high on it, and now I'm being considered for MEPS. And what happens when my recruiter says I'm in the clear for MEPS? What happens when I pass the physical and MEPS lets me swear in? What happens when they notice that my one kidney doesn't impede me in any way? Chances are you all will still be saying "You're never gonna get in! You're disqualified!"

I honestly just typed this up because I like that I'm proving you guys wrong so far. I've made it farther than any of you have anticipated and I'm just the type of guy who likes to rub things in.

I get the impression that if you do somehow manage get into the military, you will not make it through your first Enlistment.

Madison Holloway your disqualification will come when you sit down with the MEPS doctor and they see the documents saying you only have one kidney. They will then reference DOD policy (not air force or army) and disqualify you. At that point, your branch specific waiver authority who looks at hundreds of waiver requests a day will review your waiver request, the notes of the medical doctor that disqualified you, and make his or her determination. Make no mistake about, you will be automatically disqualified at MEPS, but if your service of choice has expanded the waiver guidance, you may be granted a waiver to serve in a minimum capacity. You are not deployable worldwide with one kidney and the military is kicking people out every day who have served 15 great years and now can't deploy.

While your enthusiasm is appreciated and your ASVAB scores are impressive, your attitude is deplorable. Keep in mind these same non-commissioned officers, soldiers, and commissioned officers that took the time to give you advice (on upwards of 5 separate posts) are the same people who will be your commanders, supervisors, and peers. Your mocking, and vindictive tones will not win you any praise in their eyes...and a the military is very small community. Heck, some may even be your civilian employers or connected in some way. Don't burn bridges. You would be wise to stop posting here, start listening to the amazing advice senior leaders have shared, and start considering options outside of the military.

That being said, if you are lying, you are a troll. Why you would choose to troll a military networking site is beyond me...

If you end up enlisting, best of luck to you, because you will be gone before you finish your second week of training. You have shown no ability to take criticism, and have shown direct disrespect to NCOs and SNCOs. If you were to do that as a trainee, well, lets just say you wouldn't have trouble passing the push up portion of your PT test.

Let me take the time to call you out on something else. You took the ASVAB today... yet you said you scored a 94. Do you have a time machine? If so, maybe you can get in it to see for yourself that you won't be able to enlist. Otherwise, it takes roughly 2-3 weeks to score an ASVAB (and sorry, but reading your posts I don't get the feeling that you would truly be better than 94% of the average 18-23 year old populace).

My sons friend tried to enlist with one kidney and although I applaud the recruiter and how hard he tried to get him a waiver it ended up in failure. Although I still wish you the best. I do hope you change your attitude or at least don't let anyone at MEPS see this in you. The military is a great path and prepared me for college and becoming a police officer!

Mr. Madison, when it comes to actual service policy and regulations, go to an authoritative source, not opinions on RP. In your case, that would be your recruiter, who hopefully, but not necessarily, will provide the definitive answer.

That said... it is pretty immature to cop an attitude when people provide honest opinions to your honest question. I doubt if they were just trying to screw with you. Hence the down vote.

If you do get recruited, I hope you rapidly gain some maturity and tact. If not, you will probably at best be a bitter, unhappy, one-termer; with a hundred reasons why it is everybody else's fault that the military was a bad experience. That is an opinion I hope you prove wrong.

Your last 12 words tells any service member all they need to know about you and speaks a lot to your character. You came here, you asked for advice and were given it. You were already disqualified by the Army so you have seen it once.

Ok, some Air Force recruiter let you take the ASVAB and you scored a 94. Congratulations. At MEPS the Doctors will not clear you as you have already been shown and told by numerous folks, myself included. You have not 'proven' anyone wrong. A recruiters job is to recruit. Most are scrupulous, and experienced, some are not.

Your attitude is not conducive to the military. Period. Any branch.

You want to enlist? Great! Kudos. IF/WHEN you make it past MEPS Doctors and are sworn in, then come back and let us know. I won't be holding my breath and neither will anyone else here. Meanwhile, take your one functioning good kidney and make the most out of a civilian career.

There is always a solution to a problem Madison Holloway. I can understand the hardship of not being able to do something that you’ve dreamed of your whole life. Or maybe just trying to escape the life you currently live. Non of us on here no anything really know about you and there for we are only able to offer our best advice in light of not knowing much other then what you have posted.

There are other military options that may actually fit your current situation and may not be so strenuous on your body. Unfortunately your kidneys are a huge function of your body and without two of them you put your body into so much risk of serious and painful drawn out death.
With that being said, have you looked into your local Malitia by chance? Here is a link that may assist you in maybe finding an alternative military. I have both civilian and veteran friends in some of the ones where I live. I think maybe that would be a better place for you to start.

There maybe some folks here that may help guid you in your journey through life. Not really sure why your in a hurry to become a soldier, most of us just come back broken anyways.
Good luck and I as a hot head kid once myself, I would maybe approach things differently. Some times people make there choice of your enlistment based on your attitude and how treat others. Even the military has standards of how you conduct your mannerism towards others and yourself. This with a forward negative post like this would potentially put fellow soldiers in danger.

The Air Force is going to disqualify you too. DOD Instruction 6130.03 states that having only one kidney is disqualifying. There are no standards listed that would allow a waiver. While I won't say it is impossible, I join with all of the rest of them here that have told you the same thing.

Second, your attitude leaves a lot to be desired. You do that to a sergeant and you'll get smoked.

You know what? Screw it. My first response came when I was tired, was being diplomatic. This morning after a solid 5 hours of sleep and two cups of Mississippi mud I go back and re-read. FTS.

You're an arrogant, ungrateful prick. You come here asking for advice of people that are not just senior but KNOW what the hell they are talking about. Many of whom are or were recruiters for the various branches. You get shown time and again that it is not an individual branch policy but rather DOD which overrides, oversees and commands all branches as far as policy, that you are barking in the wrong tree. You get provided documentation in the form of articles and current regulations to back up what each and every person here has said, repeatedly. Then, on top of that you ask where something comes in when it has already been shown to you where it comes in and has come in. The Army took one look at you and said nope. You scored 94 on the ASVAB. You know what that gets you and means? Hurray, I have toilet paper. It means nothing in terms of getting you enlisted. It just means, depending on how the scores break down that you are open for more jobs in more branches. That is all. That score will not over ride a disqualifying characteristic and will not open a door that is not there. You have ONE, count it ONE kidney. You will not be joining ANY branch of the armed services until and unless DOD current policy is amended that is not likely to happen in your lifetime.

Next we move on to your ignorance of what 'progress' is in military terms. Progress is not getting some Air Force recruiter to let you take the ASVAB. Progress is not even getting sent to MEPS. Those are standard things that are done a million times a year or more. Progress is getting to MEPS and making it past the battery of highly trained Doctors, technicians and screeners and getting them to not just sign off on your disqualifier but pulling the magic trick and getting a recruiter at MEPS to break regulations and enlist you.

Then we address your arrogance as if all of the above was not bad enough. For you to come here and state in closing that you are THAT guy, that loves for nothing more than to rub things in. That was stupid. It's not what the military or members are about. It is not the attitude of a team player. As a former recruiter, I’ll let you in on a couple secrets guy. Some recruiters will humor you just to get their leadership off their back. They’re submitting you for a waiver (which can often take months to process) and it makes them seem like they are working. No branch of service is going to take you with only one kidney. Your one kidney impedes you in the fact that you’re a liability to military service (personnel wise and financially). Glad you think you have a chance, but try a little expectation Managment guy. No one is hurting for bodies enough to drop their standards that much.

Not going to upvote nor will I down vote - I will not upvote because, quite frankly, you are behaving like a prick, and pity the poor NCO that has to train and mentor you, I will not downvote because you are trying to serve.

That being said, should you fall through the cracks and manage to enlist, lose the attitude. Nothing will get on your supervisors nerves more then some boot who thinks they know more, or thinks they can slide by the system, it will bring microscopic scrutiny upon you, and a world of pain. We NCO's can and will utilize the regulations and policies to absolutely wreck smartass boots. until the desired attitude adjustment is achieved.

I read your post carefully. I can already tell you are lying in your post, I’m certain all the other leaders caught it as well. Well when you fill out the medical history paperwork to get into the physical you will have to lie about your missing kidney or the medical staff will dismiss you fast. So to lie through MEPS (I think there is a question about being rejected by another branch on the questionnaire) and the Air Force lets you in. During Basic you will start lying, to your fellow trainees, to your sergeants, to anyone else. At some point either you will forget all the lies you told and slip up, or you will brag about getting over on MEPS. Then the house of cards you built will collapse hard and fast. If your lucky it happens in the first 180 days, that way they might simply end your contract with a general discharge at the convenience of the government. At 181 days it becomes a series of non- judicial punishment that will snowball into a court martial either Bad Conduct or Less than Honorable Conditions. That will follow you forever. Any job with a whisper of government connection that discharge will come back to bite you. Be honest, totally honest with everyone and in the future you can honestly say “I tried to become an airman, but I was medically disqualified.” If you say that, I’ll admire your honesty and not hesitate to buy you a beer.

You have the wrong attitude for military service. Even if you do make it in, you will likely have disciplinary problems and not be in for long. Just because they say they will 'consider' sending you to MEPS, does not mean that you are in. Several people were rejected at MEPS when I enlisted.

You know, the strange thing is that the medical standards are there for a reason. The reason is not to keep you from joining one of the armed services; they are they to keep you alive. With one kidney, if that kidney fails due to disease, accident, or wound in combat, you will be instantly in a critical medical condition. And as you grow older, you will experience situations where your one kidney will be a real risk exposure - my wife lives with one kidney and pays constant attention to ensuring that the one she has stays healthy. Military medicine can work wonders, military medical evacuation can get people out of the combat theater to major medical facilities rapidly. But what you are betting on is that the tactical situation will allow your evacuation, that the forward area medical facility you end up in will have the capability and expertise to deal with a kidney failure, etc. As an Air Force officer I have been stationed places (on an island off North Korea, on a mountaintop in Alaska, in northern Luzon) where depending on the weather our site medic with minimal equipment and no special renal care knowledge or experience might have had to keep you alive for days before rescue could have gotten you out. The second half of this is that you become a competitor for scarce resources in the medical system and a problem in assignments. Yes, I know with respect to the other services on here the Air Force may seem like it is a low threat environment. But I commanded combat crews and a squadron with a combat mission. The last thing I needed was to have to worry about the health of my people and how that health might limit what I could ask them to do. It becomes even more problematic when you cannot be deployed overseas. Now someone else has to go in your place. That also limits your career prospects by making it difficult to gain the types of experience that you need to progress in a career. Oh, and a hint, fix your attitude if you are accepted. Spending effort to prove people wrong so you can rub things in is stupid in any employment, but doubly so when you are working with professionals. Your career will finish very early if you don't fix that.

I understand you wanting to get in, and I commend you for it. A friend of mine had a son leave for basic in the Marine Corp just 3 weeks ago. His recruiter knew about his only having 1 functioning kidney as well and they sent him through the MEPS in Little Rock. Just last week, the Marine Corp decided that they were going to be letting him go. Please keep that in mind if you do make it past MEPS. I know my friend's son now feels like he failed, but I told him to tell his son to keep his head up, because like you, he at least has the balls to sign his name on the line in order to defend our freedoms from all enemies, foreign and domestic!

You do realize there is a reason why you are disqualified from service based on having only one kidney.. right? It's not to pick on you or play games. It is because you are easily dehydrated and therefore a risk to have in tropical climates. Which would then make others have to deploy In your place.. also if your one kidney failed because of dehydration you would then have to be on dialysis and medically discharged at the expense of the government. Lost of revenue to train you and shelter you and feed you.

What it comes down to is this: did your recruiter check the regulation? He may not know the regs but the docs at MEPS will. And if someone still overlooks it and it gets picked up later, you will be processed out (this is all assuming it is in-fact a disqualifying condition) and a lot of time and resources will have been wasted.

I had the opposite situation when I enlisted in 1983. My recruiter immediately dismissed me, saying that because I am deaf in one ear, I won't qualify. My naive 17-year-old response was "What harm is there in trying? The worst they can do is say "no"". Of course, at that point, I had no idea about regulations, etc. As it turns out, I was right and he was wrong... at that time, single-sided deafness was NOT a disqualifier for enlistment (I believe it is now), only for certain MOSs. 36 years later, I am still serving.

My advice to you is to look up the regulation yourself. If it is a disqualifier, you will only slip through the cracks for so long; someone will eventually pick up on it and push the issue. If you still choose to take your chances beyond that point, at least you will be informed. The Army has AR 40-501, "Standards of Medical Fitness". I'm sure the AF has an equivalent regulation. Perhaps someone in here can help you locate that regulation. It will behoove you to know what it says regarding your condition, just in case they try to BS you like they did me.

What will happen is that once you do your MEPS physical, they will send the paperwork to the Air Guard Bureau in Washington, DC and they will disqualify you there. The recruiter actually has no say in the matter, they simply have to follow procedure. Make sure you have the best paperwork you can get since all you will be is a case on paper to the person who reviews it. Once it is stamped "DISQUALIFIED" the recruiter will let you know. I used to work physical exams for the Air National Guard full time, so I do have a clue. But I have been retired for 4 years and things change. Good luck!!!

When you fill out you medical form at MEPS it ask about any operations or physical abnormalities, your will be informed of the evaluation by the Doctor. If you get to MEPS and they put you through the entrance physical without any hiccups you would be golden for entering. But that is where they will disqualified you for sure. The AF would be the hardest to enter as they get enough people they always make mission. I think maybe you shouldn't get your hopes up. It sounds as if the Army recruiter already knew you would be disqualified. The MEPS probably will strip you and check for whatever he sees as abnormal. I really wish you luck and hope it works out.
I would advise you to be on your best behavior at MEPS, most service people do not appreciate rude people trying to get into the military. They have what you are hoping for - enlistment.

My first assignment as a Chaplain was at Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC. a good portion of my time went toward interviewing and writing recommendations to the Commander for Soldiers who should not have been in BCT. The recruiter's job is to get as many people "on the bus" as possible. It was MEPS' job to weed out those with disqualifications; however, there were always some who made it through to BCT. Problems arose during BCT, necessitating their discharge.

There are reasons "disqualifyers" are in place, and they are really for your own good, and the greater good of the Military as a whole. I could tell you stories of people who made it through MEPS, only to get put on a bus and sent back home after getting to BCT. Soldiers with conditions like Tourette Syndrome; Screws holding their bottom jaw on; people with major depression; and some who did not pass the ASVAB (a few confessed their Recruiters took the test for them!). Just about everyone of them said, "my recruiter said not to tell," but then when they arrived and began the stress of BCT, their issues came to the surface--a few resulting in death. I could go on, but my point has been made.

Here is something for your consideration, it is a violation of Military UCMJ to fraudulently enlist in the Military, and subject to fines, imprisonment, and less-than-honorable discharge. There were not many Commanders referred for prosecution, but why take the chance? There is a reason when you are sitting in MEPS completing paperwork that your Recruiter will not even be allowed in the room. It's your own neck you put on the line when you sign the documents and swear everything is true.

Say you do make it through MEPS, BCT, AIT, and you are in the Air Force and something happens to your one good kidney? You won't qualify for a Medical Discharge, you will receive a Chapter 13 (a.k.a. a "trainee's discharge,") because it was something that would normally get caught during MEPS, BCT, or AIT. At that point you stand a greater chance of a Court Martial, because you knew better, so you profit nothing.

Now is the time to think like an adult and consider your long-term health, not like a teenager who has to try proving everyone wrong.

When I entered the Army, I was young, fit, and had no medical issues. Now I cannot hardly walk, am in constant pain, and cannot do the things I used to love (working on cars, cooking, hiking, etc.). If I had the chance to go back and do things differently, I'd tell myself to put my health first!

This is my two-cents, you can take or leave it. But one thing for you to consider, say you make it to BCT, proving everyone on RallyPoint wrong, so what? Do you think anyone will be impressed? Not a single person will care. Say you go all the way, and for some reason you get sick and go into kidney failure, and die, do you think anyone here will care or say, "that's the guy who showed all of us!"? Again, not a single person. There are too many of us facing our own problems and situations, to give a rat's ass about some "kid."

So do things for the one it truly matters, yourself.

I’m just going to add my piece here.
First of all, the fact that you not only went into one recruiting station to have them tell you straightforwardly that your serious health condition is a disqualifier not under Army policy, but under DOD policy, but then went into a SECOND recruiting station to try your odds at that one was a blatant waste of your time and theirs. You have one kidney, that’s not something a MEPS doctor will risk their license to practice to clear. I know, it’s unfortunate and you probably would want to do anything to serve your country, but there are things that just cannot be done. Plain and simple, you won’t pass MEPS. They almost didn’t pass me because my feet were slightly flat around the edge of the arches. My arches are slightly flat and that might make my feet hurt, you’ve only got one kidney. You’ve got about an equal chance as a kid in an iron lung at this point.
Secondly, be aware that there are reasons why the military disqualifies individuals with certain conditions. If any perfectly healthy trainee were to fall off the top of an obstacle course, they’ll likely have to see the medics and go on a profile for a coulple weeks. If the same happens to you, you could die. The military realizes that having recruits die during training is not only a tragic happening, but it also hurts future recruiting opportunities when potential candidates read “Military recruit succumbs to injuries after falling off obstacle course” or “Recruit goes into cardiac arrest during PT Test.” It harms you, the military, and those recruiters who are just trying to do their job. One of my buddies went to basic with a kid who lied about having athesma who had an athesma attack during their first PT test in basic and died before they could even get him off the track. The DOD isn’t disqualifying you because they have a vendetta against people with one kidney, but because you have an extremely detrimental health condition that can kill you. C’mon, use that 94 ASVAB score.
Lastly, based off of your attitude and the fact that you originally came here and went from trying to gain knowledge from individuals who are in the military and understand the regulations regarding medical standards, to trying to prove everyone wrong whilst spitting in our faces, it may not be in your best interest to enlist. You’ve just insulted NCOs, SNCOs, Officers, and soldiers alike who would probably end up working with you if you were to get in. If that attitude carries over into basic training, your drill sergeants/drill instructors/cadre would likely push you to the point where you refuse to complete basic training. It happened to two trainees in my cycle. Should you miraculously make it through training and that same attitude carries over into your first unit, everyone in your unit will dislike you. Other lower enlisted will hate working with you, your NCOs will likely counsel you repeatedly, and your commanding officers will try and chapter you out at every turn. Understand that the actual military isn’t like what people think it is nowadays. Your NCOs won’t smoke you whenever you disrespect them, they’ll just give you negative counselings. Eventually, those counselings will turn into Article 15s, and then when you’ve lost your free time, your pay, and your rank time and time again, eventually you’ll get a dishonorable discharge.
Don’t be that guy, respect all these senior leaders with years of experience under their belts, and start turning in applications for civilians jobs that will help you develop a long term career.

First of all, Madison, you need to get your attitude in check, especially if you make it into the Air Force. Second, the DoD policy from which all services, to include the USAF, clearly states that "Absence of one kidney, congenital or acquired" is disqualifying for service. Hopefully, your recruiter told you that your acceptance into the Air Force is contingent upon a medical waiver or an ETP request? Plus, having only one kidney means that you will be limited in your deployment availability as you cannot be deployed to a kinetic environment due to the risk of losing your good kidney, due to blast injuries, etc. So, good luck to you in the future. I have over 30 years of medical standards experience in the Air Force and I can tell you that you have a chance...a very slim one, but a chance. But, please get your attitude in check. You do not know more than anyone else and neither does your recruiter.

More than likely before you ever get near a MEPS station. There are some conditions incompatible with military service. You are already at risk for issues physically. Under certain training conditions, that level of risk rises to lethal. I've had Marines before during training in places like 29 Palms or South Korea drop like a sack of taters. Heat condition, rigorous training, and insufficient water intake will fell the strongest fit individuals quickly. In your case I would suggest rigorous honesty in your physical state, and submit a request. If the answer is no, there are good reasons for it.

I know when I was trying to get in (circa 1996) the airforce wouldn't take me because of a pending charge on my record. The army recruiter took me in, gave me a chance and got the charges dropped. My hope is that this changes his attitude about things and gives him some humility.

When you get to MEPS you will be asked to fill out a medical form. You are EXPECTED to be honest, and put down everything wrong with you, including any medical problems. In accordance with current medical standards and the examing Doctor, you will then have your answer whether or not you will be qualified for service. Your recruiter is NOT a Doctor, and can be in some hot water for knowingly sending you there with a false intention and documents.
Be honest, the military is not for everyone and does not bend its rules for anyone who can not measure up. This is not a social event, its literally a matter of life and death.

Hi Madison,
Prior to retiring, I was an Army Healthcare Recruiter in Newburgh, NY for four years and a Station Commander in Akron, OH for three. I actually ran across this issue once in Akron and unfortunately it didn't work out well for the applicant. Unfortunately, according to 40-501, having only one kidney does not meet the standard. What your recruiter likely did was push your paperwork forward to MEPS for a "med read". The doctors will no doubt disapprove the med read, but that's not necessarily where in ends. The paperwork can then be sent to the command surgeon where he can grant an exception to physical. That will at least get you in the door at MEPS. After that, the recruiter has to request a med waiver (501) to the same doctor that approved you to physical. One of two things will happen. Either he will approve the waiver and you will be good to go or if he disapproves it, that's it. It's a wrap. Now, not to get your hopes up, but one thing I learned especially from the guy who specialized in this at my station is that anything can happen and no one situation fits "neatly" into the way it's looked at by higher. No one can truly disapprove you except for the command surgeon. As recruiters, we are simply paperwork facilitators and cannot truly approve or disapprove anyone for military service. That decision comes from much higher than us. I hope that you found this helpful and wish you success in your future endeavors.

I don’t know how far along you are in the process, and I’m still pretty new to the game with me being in tech school right now but maybe I can help a little?

So I spent a year literally trying to get into the Air Force due to meps wanting to make sure I didn’t have asthma (I was falsely diagnosed with it as a child).

Anyways so I can relate to getting through meps and all that however the health getting doesn’t just stop at meps. We had a person get disqualified even after arriving to basic because meps doesn’t always get it 100% due to how many people they deal with. Another guy had significant hearing damage that was not caught at meps.

Point is just because you make it through meps and things are cool with your recruiter, doesn’t mean you are in the clear. If only having 1 kidney is a 100% written disqualification, tread carefully. I’m not saying things can’t work out because I spent a whole year pressing away so my wife and I could start on a new journey; but know that if you do get in with your dream job, it can be taken because of your health condition.

So this was posted a few months ago and I do hope that you were able to enlist with only one kindey. One thing I advise for you though is that you lose the chip on your shoulder about people telling you that you won't be able to join. I've looked through many but not all the responses and all were from people who are either currently in service or are proir service which tells me that they have YEARS more experience than you. One thing you should have learned is that it doesn't matter which branch you join, either you learn to work as a team or you WILL be told somewhere along your career path that you do not need or should not re-enlist based solely on your attitude. Being in the military is a privilage not a right and the military has the responsibility to the rest of those that are serving to ensure that ALL service members are capable of serving everywhere, you included. If your lack of kidney ever becomes an issue with your service the military, all branches, reserves the right to chapter you out, at any time. Being as you have what the military regards as a pre-existing condition not related to service, that would mean that you would be told that your service is no longer needed and you would not be able to file for any after service benefits (disability) related to your lack of kindey whether you developed problems related to that or not. It's a catch22 where you come out losing in the end.
I know this because I was trying to help another vet file a clame for something similar a few years ago, they joined with a known medical problem with a waiver and after their service became sick from complications from those known medical problems. The VA decided that it was NOT service connected and denied the claim, based on the fact that it was a known problem previous to service and had not been an issue during service. They went to around 20 different civilian doctors as well as numerous VA doctors to no avail.

As a former Navy Recruiter, my recommendation is to get an all clear from your Doctor and submit all paperwork to your recruiter so he or she can submit paperwork to BUPERS for a waiver. I had to do this multiple times and sometimes they get approved and sometimes they do not. Biggest thing is to get your civilian doctor to state that you are in good health and should be able to pass the military fitness test. Unsure if having one kidney is an automatic disqualification, MEPS would have to look it up in their medical manual and verify. I don't recommend giving up yet but I would suggest only trying to join the Air Force, Coast Guard or Navy. Army and Marines would really put you to the test physically.

In high school I knew plenty of guys that hid truths or lied to get in. If I could find the right lie to back in I would do it. In this case no omission or lie is needed; in order for the kidneys to keep you healthy you only need one to function at 10%. You can live a long life with no kidney function thanks to dialysis. Madison, I endorse the comments from the responders who were trying to give honest advice based on their experience. At the very least, you were very rude and inconsiderate to take the attitude you did....it really sucks.
On a lighter note, I'd like to pass the story of how I joined the Army. It was way back in 1964 and I was a 18-year old kid who wanted badly to join. Unfortunately, I also had acne (pimples = zits) very badly. In those days, the draft was in full operation and the Army could be choosy about who got in and who didn't. After going back for my fifth follow-up physical and getting rejected, my mother got fed up with the situation and took matters into her own hands. My recruiter was a 2nd generation Irish-American named SSG Ryan. My mother promised him a bottle of the whiskey of his choice if I passed my next follow-up physical. A month later, I passed the physical and Ryan got his bottle !!

You know, I think its great that you are persevering and that you're not giving up easily. But you may still want to think twice about displaying a condescending attitude towards past and present leaders. Some of these people may end up being your supervisor or commander if you are successful in making it through MEPS.

Also keep in mind, that your trial is not over yet. So you may want to consider standing down until the final results are in.

Finally, keep in mind, being a service member is about teamwork. It is about being a part of something that is much greater than yourself. It is about putting others before yourself, putting your country before yourself, and putting the mission before yourself; and rubbing things in does not make for an effective leader. I wish you the best of luck, but trust me, if you do make it into the military, your current attitude will take you down a road that will make serving very difficult. Keep in mind, they don't call it "Service" for nothing. If you are focused on yourself and unwilling to "serve" others, then you're trying to get in the wrong business.

You are a liability on a deployment. Your a dead man walking on foot patrol, in a convey. You get shot in your 1 kidney there is very little your company medic can do for you.

The issue is not that you currently are fit enough. The issue is can your body handle the hostile environment of combat. Can your 1 kidney handle working 5 days straight with little food and water because you are constantly fighting. Also if your kidney starts to fail then the military will end up having to pay for your medical expenses and disability. It is cheaper for the military to say no. You are not entitled to enlist. When I enlisted I was in amazing shape and had many plans but now here I am with torn labrums in my hips for the second time. Ive never had any medical issues in my life until the military. So you need to realize you have a serious disability and if the airforce lets you in itll be a miracle. Recruiters have a job to recruit as many bodies as possible due to high quotas. They'd send people in wheel chairs to MEPS if they could.

Two things:

1- until you transition from potential recruit, to basic training graduate, you’re still “trying”. You haven’t made it yet. And with that sort of attitude, you probably won’t. If you do, the army has a way of weeding this sort of Soldier out.
2- There are policies and rules and regulations by the thousands. There are always exceptions. If you fall into the category that may get in under an exception to policy, consider yourself lucky- not special. Arrogance is not the same as confidence.

Madison. You are not qualified for enlistment with one kidney. What it looks like the recruiter is trying to do is get you a medical exception to policy. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Not really. In all likelihood, you'll have to take the ASVAB (already done), get a MEPS physical (you'll fail), then he'll send all your records to a medical review at the big Air Force level, and if the medical review officer says the waiver is granted then you are in. If not, then you are out. It takes several months usually, but who knows. Stranger things have happened. Best of luck.

I served with a young MP in the 1970s and we were on our first enlistment. He came down with what they thought was a kidney infection coupled with the flu. Upon x-ray, they found he had only one kidney. He was administratively separated from the Army in less than 3 weeks. I had an autoimmune disorder as a teenager. It took me six addition weeks of obtaining paperwork, letters from my PCP and specialist. I had to sign a waiver that I would receive no disability benefits if I were to acquire another autoimmune disorder while on active duty. The military is unforgiving with respect to the health of recruits in entering the service. I served as a CID Agent on a trainee post and investigated several trainee deaths associated to natural causes. It’s not pretty for the trainee leadership when a trainee dies of natural causes at 18-19 years of age.

I am a true believer in follow your goals and dreams. Going down to MEPS for medial review is not up to the recruiter. He or she can submit paper work for a (medical waiver) and that is up to MEPS doctor, and goes all the way up to Air Force HQ for final approval. However, I am not discouraging you and telling you not to follow your dreams and to no enlist if giving the option by all means jump on it. Just be mindful that physical fitness is something to a next level and praying you have been preparing you self.

Air Force PT test and physical standards are tough in some ways not to knock them down. If the army already turned you down for medical reasons then the Air Force will review this for accuracy. The Army, Marines have a much higher standard especially with the new ACFT test and longer training weeks for boot camp and AIT. That would explain why you was turned down.

Again I’m not trying to discourage you by all means keep pushing n hopefully you will get a contract.

The best advice I can give you is train and prepare your body for the most psychical and demanding environment you can possible phase. It won’t be easy for you and it already is much harder for other people who don’t share the same medical situation as you.

( Just keep one thing in mind your health and life is more important that wearing a uniform. where you risk it all if you are not capable of getting through your first enlistment.

I don't see it as you are "proving" anybody wrong. Situations change with time. When I enlisted I had to get medical clearance from my doctor because of a heart murmur. Medical technology has come a LONG way to where a person with 1 kidney if needed has much more help available to them than what was in the 70s. So if you do get in that is great for you. Even if the one kidney limits you to desk work. I am happy for you but it will be because of medical availability that you have no control over and not necessarily what you yourself did. And with this liking to rub things in? You may find your duty stations pretty lonely because you will need help at some point and you may have a hard time getting it after rubbing people the wrong way. I wish you luck in your future whichever way it leads

Madison, unfortunately you are attempting to enter the military for the wrong reasons, all these fine people are offering you very solid advise and there opinions based on experience. My brothers and sisters have served honorably in the United States Military as part of a volunteer military forging life long friendships and knowledge, and you are ignoring this knowledge. I cannot speak for the other branches, but if you make it into the service, basic training in the Army is designed to test your limits physically and mentally. They break you down as an individual brutally at times, and bring you back up as a team. What you have demonstrated so far is the me, me, me way, and far from being a team approach similar to sports. I will promise you one thing these fine men and women have not told you about yet; that is, any individual who puts themselves first before the team will get celebrated with a personal party when the Drill Sergeant is not around. In my basic training barracks, and as of recently two years ago in my son's barracks, we had none willing participants get their very own "Blanket Party." If you are unsure of what I am talking about, Google the Blanket Party seen of Full Metal Jacket where the character "Pyle," gets his party. Yep, you may be proud to move forward towards MEPS farther than most have given you credit for, but be warned about the attitude, it will be adjusted; either by the Drill Sergeant's choice or manually through others. So this advice here is not to deter you from serving, but to show respect to the men and women who are trying to give you solid advice and not rub their nose in it like a dog who just pee'd on the carpet.

US Army Retired 1st Sgt. went thru 20 years in the Army--Airborne--Ranger and did not find out I had only one kidney until 3 years after I retired thru a medical exam that required an MRI. They ask me when I had my kidney removed--told em I never did and that is the first I knew about having only one kidney--was in army hospitals at least seven times during the 20 years I was in.

So, seeing that the original post was 6 months ago, what was the outcome? I'm betting that when the recruiter sent his medical records to MEPS for screening, the docs there said no. I know as a recruiter I sent a few things up to MEPS knowing the answer would be no, but they were the types of things that I was going to let the Chain of Command deny so I had more back up. On a more personal note, you might want to check the attitude. Too many times I've dealt with people that have a crappy attitude towards people, then expect to get help when needed. Even if it's that person's job to help, if you treat them poorly, almost invariably you will not get the utmost out of them. Why would anyone want to help someone that treats them like crap?

Passing the physical is no piece of cake. The Doctors will check for everything and go over the results with you. Having one kidney may or may not disqualify you but it will hinder you in performing during strenuous activity and combat exercises. You have to be a team player and your attitude is always being observed. From your answers to the posts I have seen, you had best clean up your act or risk being sent home for being unable to adapt.

I certainly hope that they accept you. Frankly, they ought to accept anyone who volunteers. In your case with a waiver where YOU agree that should your kidney fail/be injured, you WILL NOT seek benefits. In 1966 a lifelong dream ended at 21 when I was rejected due to a childhood illness that healed on its own leaving me no less able than anyone else. The military's position was, "hey pal, it could come back." That was in direct opposition to my own Dr. who said I now had the same chance of an occurrence as ANYONE else. I volunteered to execute a waiver as I mentioned and took it all the way up the line where it was rejected again. Same crazy reasoning. Several year later I did manage to make it into the Army (by not saying anything) but my old record came up while in AIT and I was told that I had no career path. My Dad a WW 2 vet and I both agreed that even if you are not 100%, your willingness should outweigh a potential disability. When super star Willie Joe Namath of the New York Jets was rejected due to his knees, my Dad's comment was, there are PLENTY of jobs in the military where the condition of your knees won't matter. I'm 72 now, have never had a re-occurrence of my childhood illness and have had no ill effects from it since. Good luck. There is a question I have though, like me, perhaps you will be kicking yourself in the ass in 50 years. Would they have known if you did not tell them? In my case they would never have found out had I not stupidly brought my medical records along to show how healthy I was. Hah! Dumb move. A few years back a guy made it through USMC boot camp and the crucible with Cystic Fibrosis. He knew it would eventually catch up with him but he wanted to prove he had the mettle and his squad mates covered for him. Loved the story.

Might wanna watch your step there Madison. As far as a lot of recruiters are concerned, you’re just a number. A warm body. I’m not saying your recruiter is. I spent 3 years as a recruiter in the Navy and I’ve known recruiters from all branches. All those Drs at MEPS work for the military. Not just one branch. One military, one goal. Your recruiter may be the kind of guy that needs a contract. Your condition may be covered up. It may resurface again in 3-4 years. If so, the recruiter dummy’s up and puts the blame on you for non-disclosure making you ineligible for any benefits. Again, I’m not saying your recruiter is this guy but, it’s your responsibility to make it known to MEPS. And by the way, if you do make it through with only one kidney, someone in basic might just kick your ass for you with your “rub it in” attitude. That won’t get you very far in any branch of the service.

Great that you want to enlist. Poor attitude for a very heavy teamwork environment. If you think making it this far proves your worth, you're very wrong. The hardships do not start and end with MEPS and bootcamp. If anything, it starts once you get your first duty station after basics. I hope you don't think that a high ASVAB score will be significant and respectful enough to follow you throughout your military career.

As far as medical conditions go, it really is dependent on time, if we're at war or not, how desperate the military is, among other factors.

If you do in fact make it in, I really hope, for your sake and other's around you, that your attitude will not cost lives.

So, funny thing, I found out in my 24th year in that I also had only one kidney. I let my Chain and Support Channel know and dis the whole medical review board and finally some Dr with the CAARNG State Surgeon gave me a clean bill of health on the basis that since it had not impeded me in the past, he saw no reason why it would do so in the future.

(It was discovered when I went in for a back issue and they noticed a “grey blob” which turned out to be my enlarged single kidney that developed as such I guess to do the work of two.

I went through the process of enlisting in the Army back in 98. Hell, I spent many a morning in the gym with my recruiter, trying to drop the post-HS weight gained.

However, it was discovered at MEPS that I have congenital hearing loss. I was just over the threshold for where they could no longer grant a waiver.

If you have serious potential medical issues, son, you do NOT want to enlist. In 2002, I would likely have been in Afghanistan (had I enlisted in the MOS I was aiming for). In August of that year, I survived a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Had this occurred while I was deployed, the likelihood of survival would have been nil.

Consider yourself lucky that you have the knowledge of your medical issue. I didn't know a damned thing until it was too late.

Don't be stupid about it.

I joined the Marine Corps. at 21 with Mild Cerebral Palsy, Scoliosis, and flat feet. I didn't mention any of that to my recruiters MEPS didn't find my Cerebral Palsy and my Scoliosis is between my shoulders so it doesn't cause any performance issues and flat feet they didn't care...I served my time in the Suck 91-95 Honorably Discharged Suck it up and handle your shit!

A recruiter may consider going through the process of they need appointments, but I'd still need a waiver.

A waiver that never gets passed.

Most DQ circumstances do not get passed with waivers.

The minute you meet the wrong doctor you'll be out. Meeting the minimum physical requirements to serve helps, but there is a lot more to being a successful Airman than just doing your PT. I doubt you're joining for the right reasons anyway, so you should probably consider another career. If you have something to prove you can always become a MMA fighter.

Physical and Medical Standards are set by Medical Professionals and subject matter experts. Most are set in stone, some allow for waivers. Having ONE functional kidney is usually qualifying for initial entry by all branches of the Uniformed Services.
I found out that I have one minimally functioning kidney and one normally functioning kidney after nearly 8 years of service but was able to complete more than 20 years of active service.

The causes for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction are:

a. Cystitis (595).

b. Urethritis (597).

c. Enuresis (788.3) or incontinence of urine beyond age 12. (See also para 2–29.)

d. Hematuria, pyuria, or other findings indicative of renal tract disease (599).

e. Urethral stricture (598) or fistula (599.1).

f. Kidney.

(1) Absence of one kidney, congenital (753.0) or acquired (593.89).

(2) Infections, acute or chronic (590).

(3) Polycystic kidney (753.1), confirmed history of.

(4) Horseshoe kidney (753.3).

(5) Hydronephrosis (591).

(6) Nephritis, acute (580) or chronic (582).

g. Proteinuria (791) under normal activity (at least 48 hours after strenuous exercise) greater than 200
milligrams (mg)/24 hours, or a protein to creatinine ratio greater than 0.2 in a random urine sample, unless
nephrologic consultation determines the condition to be benign orthostatic proteinuria.

h. Renal calculus (592) within the previous 12 months, recurrent calculus, nephrocalcinosis, or bilateral renal
calculi at any time.

Honestly I’m surprised your recruiter even went as far allowing you to take the ASVAB. If you came into my office guarantee you will be turned away as soon as I found out about the missing kidney. It is not our job as Recruiters to disqualify you because that is what MEPS, regulations and policies are for. But typically if you are medically disqualified we won’t even bother.

Your Recruiter is not a medical provider, and is doing you no service by wasting your time. The medical review will take place at MEPS, where your “physical” which is actually a “history and physical” will be conducted. If you provide honest input, you will be found unfit for service as previously pointed out. If you provide false answers to the history questions, you may actually “pass” the physical due to the nature of medical privacy regulations. However, if your known information comes to light at a later time, most often through illness or injury, which your solitary kidney places you at greater risk, you can be prosecuted for fraudulent enlistment and submission of false official documents. I was born with a single kidney on my right side and it’s 1.5 times it’s normal size and I never told anyone because I feared I would be rejected from the navy. Yet they found out I have flat feet and they still let me enlist. I completed 8 years of active duty and got out under honorable condition.

Your physical at MEPS is that determining step. A recruiter has no authority to disqualify you physically as he or she is not a medical doctor. So be honest and lay your cards on the table and let the medical folks make that determination. Until then you are just another potential recruit and MEPS is the last station in that process.

Madison, neither the recruiter or ASVAB will disqualify you for a medical condition. Yes the recruiter will clear you to go to MEPS, it’s like throwing spaghetti on a wall to see which one will stick. They have to make quota every month. MEPS medical examiner makes the ultimate decision if 1 kidney will disqualify you, based on regulations and guidance. Good luck to you, but if you want to make it in the military or anywhere in life where you work with it for other people, the attitude has to change.

Madison, hey guy, best of luck. I went in back in 71 after being classified as 4F by the Army for my draft due to a bad back. Then when they lost my papers and going back for a second physical, I was not allowed to see the Doctor that disqualified me. Needless to say I passed. I went to the AF recruiter, enlisted, went to my physical and they did not find anything wrong with my back. If you have been open (and it sounds like you have been) then go for it. I do not know what AFSC you are looking at, so you may be ok. Times have changed since I retired 27 yrs ago, so I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PUTTING YOU DOWN. GO FOR IT. You have not passed the entrance physical yet. In fact, you have not taken it yet. So don’t get in anyone’s face yet. You may or may not get a waiver to join the Air Force. FYI all branches of service use the same medical standards for enlistment. So, the Air Force will have to grant a waiver for you to enlist w/ just one kidney.

MEPS is probably going to disqualify you. The recruiter gets points for all the live bodies he sends to MEPS. (I was in basic training with recruits who couldn't read but MOS was nuclear power-related.) Good luck, but given my dad's health issues with only 1 kidney - you shouldn't be going. Your lack of 1 kidney may someday jeopardize your buddy.

If it doesn’t happen during the enlistment physical it will in boot camp. Young woman who was a family friend joined the Marines with no knowledge that she had only one kidney. It was discovered during boot camp and she was let go.

The medical doctor at the MEPS will pass or fail you, based on the current policy. If you are declined, there may be a waiver you can request. Each branch has its own policies and they do change as the needs of each branch change. I was a recruiter from 1977 - 1991. I never made the rules, but learned to make them work for me. Good Luck!

In Basic I volunteered for Airborne. They knew I had a vision profile but signed me up. Did 10 weeks Airborne AIT in Ft Gordon, made top three in my class, then off to Jump School. If you had kept your mouth shut about the matter, you might have pulled it off, unless that is, the doc giving you your enlistment physical asks about those surgical scars. But the fact of the matter is you brought it up in a public forum which establishes the fact you have only one kidney in an easily verifiable manner.

Thus, even if you could have pulled off sneaking into the military with only one kidney, you have proven beyond all doubt that you do not have the intelligence to be an effective member.

You cannot join the armed forces, any branch, with just one kidney. If your only one is damaged, you immediately require dialysis, which means your blood would need cleansing three times a week for three hours or so at a time. I'm sorry. If the military lets you in they are liable for any preexisting conditions. Those preexisting conditions may not pop up until you are 50 and your remaining kidney wears out. Taxpayer may be liable for disability payments along with very expensive medical treatment. Not a good actuarial risk.

As a medic, I did see on person come through on a waiver that had one kidney. Got kicked out in boot because he got a kidney infection that affected his performance. Anything that happens with that kidney that impacts your ability to do your job or train, automatically cancels out a waiver, period.

Ignoring that you are not 100% healthy is something to take in consideration, I will tell you this is doesn't matter what you score in the test from 28 points to even 100 points everyone get the same chance to get in, the MEPS Medical clear you in for you to achieve your dreams, but be awear that if you get hurt or start blending from injuries resulting to your kidney you most like it will be discharged from service, under medical 200. Pre-existing medical conditions. Good luck don't get hurt.

If you get in, it doesn't mean they'll keep you. My son wanted to enlist so bad but I kept telling him he wouldn't pass the physical because he had Legg Calve Perthes disease as a child, resulting in a bad hip & other issues with one leg. He wouldn't give it up, though, so I figured he could talk to a recruiter & then he'd have to believe them. Amazingly, they said it would not keep him from getting in as long as he passed his MEPS physical. We gave them copies of all his medical records & he passed the MEPS physical. I was shocked! A few months later he headed to basic. However, that hip did not hold up to the training, the Army doc wanted to know why he didn't disclose the disease during recruitment because there was no documentation of it whatsoever in his medical files! He almost faced disciplinary action for it but they finally came to the conclusion that it was the recruiter/MEPS who had falsified his medical file. Ultimately though, my son was devastated by all this!

Feel grateful,privileged and honored to serve, because their are so many that can't. Also know that a lot on this sight speak from experience, some worked in positions of authority and tried helping others in your current position. I was a medic and I can tell you depending on the current need of enlistment rules that may not normally be inforced may be more inforced if enlistment is already up. It's not The Recruiter job to "turn you down" for a non immediately visible medical shortcoming.
You get a Medical Screening: They also check for scars, tattoos, etc..
If you had a Kidney removed for Donated Transplant to another person, there will be an easily Dr detectable surgical scar.
If your Kidney was removed due to a deficiency, yes it could be done Laprascopic to minimize scaring. I'm a 58 yr old American man of "European" household. To most of my era & culture, unless you're a Movie Star,
a Model, or perhaps a Gigolo, a scar is no worse than a birthmark.
No judgements.

The ASVAB doesn't have anything to do with your medical qualifications. If your recruiter knows about it, and has your medical paperwork I would proceed through the process. The enlistment physical is where the final determination on whether or not you are physically qualified to serve. Different branches of service may have different requirements. Whatever you do don't lie and omit the fact that you only have one kidney. Go to the physical and answer their questions as truthfully as possible. I'm guessing your recruiter is looking into whether or not this will be a disqualifier for your enlistment, I would talk to him / her and ask about it.

no matter which branch the department of Defense has requirements to meet and each branch has its own subset of requirements for eligible candidates. That being said the military life is a harsh working environment not suited to most people. The reason for this is the world is harsh enough without war. Basic service membership requires the healthiest physical options for daily use be available 24/7/52! example, some High school graduate ants to be a chef and feels the Military can prepare them is a logical endeavor but reality says one must be able soldier to survive all combat situations including a hazmat environment on any given day. Missing a major organ makes you a casualty 99 times out of 100. The military is not in the process of finding a casualty to recruit as set by the US Congress! Just to be fair my gramps was a 4F dairy farmer and supplied milk to the U.S. forces in training camps during WW2, so not being in the military is still open option to support the Military. Veterans organizations worldwide need supporters 24/7!

Kid, you need to understand that recruiters aren't paid to assess details of your medical status. Their job is to recruit you. If you're not obviously unfit, they're not going to turn you away. After all, DoD policies change: Something that would shoot you down one day might be all right the next. Additionally, some recruits have weird medical conditions that wouldn't actually disqualify them, or find a way to finagle an exception to the rules.

Your biggest obstacle to success isn't actually your kidney. It's what's between your ears. You need to learn not to antagonize people unnecessarily. It's good to take pride in proving you're more capable or successful than ohters expected, but don't make that a reason for them to try harder to prove you wrong.

My brother served in the Navy during the Vietnam era, he was born with only one kidney. He served 20 years. Times have changed.

The disqualification policy you are trying to circumvent was put in place for the protection of people like you and those that serve with them. I am glad you want to serve your country but your preexisting condition makes you a liability. The conditions of military service are often harsh and inhospitable. Not being able to filter impurities in your blood at full capacity is likely to result in the loss of your good kidney thus resulting in disability or death. The DOD does not need more people to take care of, especially if the disability could have been prevented in the first place. Find another way to serve.

I was a senior in High School and the draft board in their infinite wisdom classified me as 1A instead of 1 SH. In October, I get called for a Preinduction Physical. That didn't go so well as my Blood pressure was way up there. After that, the family doctore decided to put me in the hospital to run some tests. Nothing found and was placed on meds and a NO salt low sodium diet. Whe i got home the first thing I got into were the potato chips. I had planned on following my Dad into the Navy. About the time i was in the Hospital, the Gulf of Tonkin thing happened. At Easter, we were on break and I headed down to the Navy recruiter. First office I get to is the Coast Guard. Remembered the Station I saw on the Outer Banks and walked in to check out the brochures. By now, Vietnam is starting to heat up and the recruiter tells me that the Coast Guard would count as my Military obligation. I am thinking, well they don't have assets over there, so decide to join. Went through the testing then realized there would be a Physical. I siad nothing about the Blood Pressure or Meds. I went for the physical ( and had made sure I had taken my meds ). Passed the Physical. All that was left was to Graduate and get sworn in. I get to Basic and find out there would be another physical and of course, I did not bring my meds for obvious reasons. Point is, I gamed the system to get in and never had an issue with BP and ate what I wanted and NO meds. I have heard that a person could function well with just one kidney, but I guess they have their reasons. Should that kidney fail, it wouldn't be good for sure. Heck, the Coast Guard, like other Services have some pretty tough physical requirements. We had a guy that I don't know how he got in. I remember his name, but will just use his Nickname he got, "Jellyfish". In formation, he was to my right. We would be out there and then the Company Commander ( DI ) would see something he didn't like and order us to High Port Arms and double timing around the Grinder. We were drilling with an M1 Garand. They started oout at 9.2 lbs. but gained weight over time. Jellyfish would maybe take two dozen steps and it would start coming down. The CC would see it and we were doing extra laps. As I said I was on his left and i talked to the guy on his right in the barracks and we cooked up a plan. His weapon start coming down, I moved my piece to my left hand and balanced it and grabbed the barrel of his piece to keep it up. The guy on the right moved his to his right hand and used hid left to hold the stock up. Saved laps until we got caught. CC tried to chew us out, but ended up shaking his head and telling us to carry on. Jellyfish was a Reserve and probably the only reason he got in. They tended to look down on those guys. Also a City boy that could quit cut it. My Grandmother had a farm and I spent a lot of time on it in the summer and working when i got older. I also lived in the Suburbs and had a woods to play in and we were active and climbing trees and all that stuff. i was in pretty decent shape when I went in. As I said, the Blood Pressure was never an issue for some reason, after I went in.

Nice that you feel entitled to enough to be so bold when you haven’t even gotten in yet. Being over confident is not a good thing... This is not the place to be an ass when you’ve yet to even finish basic... maybe a better response would have been to comment after you actually completed basic, and then said, hey They told me this but I was able to make it due to this. No need to have an attitude with people who are trying to help you. When my 8 year old starts acting in the same manner I simply say stop acting like a spoiled liberal. Show some respect. And yes she is smart enough to understand what a socialist is.

I would not want someone like you flying left seat in a helicopter under my command or have you watching my back on the ground. You have zero leadership qualities and would probably get your men killed because of your selfish ways. Sad!

I was a recruiter just as the draft ended. It was a tough time to recruit. My first recruit was an outstanding young man and I knewvhe would be an asset to the service. Your first enlistee was always tough given all the paperwork you had to do and back then it was done on a manual typewriter. As I neared completion we did the document that asked a variety of questions that included distinguishing scars or birthmarks. He told me he had a scar on this lower right back. I asked what it was from and he said he had a kidney removed. One phone call and he had to be rejected.
Not certain what all is asked today on the paperwork but I will say that unless your recruiter has made that phone call and asked a knowledgeable person at his command or too MEPS he simply doesn't know.
I respect the fact you want to enlist but don't go to MEPS until you know. You would be doing the recruiter and yourself a favor.

What outcome did you have with this? Im in the same situation, I have 1 kidney and I'm trying everything I can to enlist.
