So far, I haven't read any bad suggestions!

I'll echo most, and add a couple: Pogey Bait, good knife, compact (but powerful) flashlight, baby wipes(!!!), 550 and/or bungie cords, TP, compact pillow, paperback book, extra socks, sunscreen (whether in the desert or sunny days in snowy areas).

Just make sure you don't take things your chain doesn't want you to bring!
