This video was sent to us by a lady out of the Reno, Nevada area. This guy was walking around pretending he was a Marine. When asked for his name he responded that, "He was on High Alert, and couldn't give that out."

He then said he was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, which have been deactivated sine 1970. The Marines do have a 26th MEU(Marine Expeditionary Unit), but it doesn't have a 3rd Battalion.
He was trying to get a discount on or a free venue for his wedding using the claims.

The guy has an obvious mental problem... Although I do not condone his wearing of the uniform, I think she went as little overboard. Call him out and/or call the police and move on. Having such an argument in public is not a good course of action.

Never argue with a crazy person. Some people might not be able to tell the difference. This guy was suffering from some flavor of mental illness. He was not walking around in dress blues with a Navy Cross from Operation Phantom Alpha Dog. Probably just needed something warm to wear waiting for the methadone clinic to open up. I am all for calling out Stolen F-ing valor but I am not sure this guy fits the profile.

Our politicians (some of whom claim Native American heritage they don't possess, and some of whom are veterans claiming to have been awarded medals they didn't earn), voted not that long ago to make it a lesser offense for those putting on the uniform and pretending to be something they are not.

??? Why would they do that?!!

Were they afraid of being held liable for their own dishonesty and lack of integrity? When people put on the uniform to try and get special perks and discounts, that just takes their offense to the next level -- to fraud!

Well it seems our lawmakers don't have the stomach to hold themselves accountable for anything, so why hold people accountable for Stolen Valor, which some of them are guilty of... Apparently they have a soft spot for liars and might feel bad punishing someone for doing the same kind of thing they did in order to get elected.

I agree with the majority of people that replied to this video. I believe there is a mental issue involved. The guy might even be homeless and picked that uniform up from a donatio center. Even with the contempt I have for stolen valor, this woman bothered me more than the man in the outdated Marine uniform. From the first time he speaks it seems apparent that he is either suffering from a mental disorder or is intoxicated. Obviously, he wasn't called back to service and told to report in his outdated uniform. That part is clearly a lie, and probably the rest of his story, but neither she nor any of us have any way of knowing this man’s veteran status with certainty. I wholeheartedly support any service member, veteran or civilian that chooses to confront a person they suspect of stolen valor. I would however urge people to use caution when doing so. Many of us have strong emotions attached to this issue, and I can easily envision a situation where an emotionally charged individual with the best of intentions, escalates one of these confrontations to a point where they themselves are at risk of legal trouble, whether criminal or civil. My issue is not with her confronting him, it is with the manner in which she confronts him. It seems this woman was more concerned with recording the next internet hit than defending the sanctity of the uniform. Does her verbal assault truly do anything to correct the situation? If her motivations for the confrontation were pure then why the need to attack him on camera? Does anyone actually believe that publicly shaming these people will deter them or others from stealing valor? We have all seen the repeat offenders on social media and sites like Guardian of Valor. I’m a fan of Guardian of Valor, and I do see value on getting these images and stories out there, as a way for the public to be made aware of scammers in their area. I do however question what it says about our community when so many of these videos involve people who seem to be enjoying the opportunity to attack someone. Why not politely ask a few questions to determine the validity of his claims, and then if she still suspected a crime was committed, report it to the authorities? I would also note that for it to be a crime he would have to gain a benefit or something of value from those lies.

Am I the only one that noticed his lack of cover outside? Yes, he obviously has mental problems, Captain Obvious. This woman does not even know what the stolen valor law is, but this guy might be a former solder with some mental issues. He is clearly confused a bit. My friend's uncle was a winch operator on a blackhawk helicopter and was injured badly in a hard landing. He developed a mental illness from the impact and became confused and would talk about his past service in the Vietnam war, except it was his father's past service he was referring too but as his own. Wearing BDUs is not a crime. I have seen too many legitimate veterans get called out by people that never served. People should know the stolen valor law before they make such challenges. I saw some crazy lady go ape shit on two hunters at McDonald's, they were in full real trees camos and had Remington rifle pins on their collar she mistook as rank insignia and she claimed they were impersonating snipers. It was hilarious cause when she threatened to call the cops, in the end it turned out they were off duty police and asked her which law they were violating. She said the law that says you can't wear combat uniforms in the city. I wish I had a video camera at the time. That was about 10 years ago. They let her rant until she knocked over one of their coffee cups. That is when one of the employees stepped in and asked her to leave or she would call the police on her, that is when the officers flashed their badges.

The guy isn't all there, videos like this say more about the people who post them then the subject of the video. The chances are that this phony Marine is to the point that he is beyond shaming, and thats all this is doing.
It also does no good to threaten to call the cops in a case like this. He is not going to be arrested, because he is not breaking the law. He is making a spectical of himself, but anyone with any brains will know he is a liar.
The best thing to do in this case is just tell him he looks like a clown and walk away. If he was trying to solicit funds for a veterans cause or bilk a charity then it would be something to call the cops about.

I think the picture alone tells the tale. Look how his arms are bowed out while at attention. No Marine sober or drunk puts his chicken wings out like that. The guy appears to have mental problems beyond being drunk. Somewhere along the way he noticed the respect Marines get and in his deluded state thought he would find acceptance by dressing up like a Marine. I think it is sad he feels it necessary to pretend like this to get acceptance. I once had a neighbor who claimed to be a Marine in Vietnam and claimed he received the CMH from President Reagan. Just so happened I had a book on the history of the Marine Corps which was published many years after the end of the Reagan administration and it had a current list of all the CMH recipients in the Marine Corps and his name wasn't on it. I showed it to him and he faked being angry his name wasn't on the list, but I could see in his eyes he was caught lying. Hey, everybody wants to be a Marine, what can we say? All this lady did was to publicly shame herself by her language. Nothing looks worse on a woman than a foul mouth. I know, I'm old fashioned, but I would be horrified if this was my wife in the video. I respect women who don't stoop down to the same level as we men.

Well for one thing unless the Marine corp has changed the regulation's he would know that Marine's are not allowed to wear the combat uniform in a civilian area,that is not on a u.s Base. and second, The condition of his uniform is shameful. plus any Marine know's that if he were on high aleart as he stated he would not be off Base. he would be in a ready area.awaiting his order's !! this man had better have a mental reason for posing as a Marine because if a Real Marine were have cought him doing this it would have been a very hard day for him for sure... to wear the Uniform of a Marine you must earn that right. If infact this man is ex military, possibly having some sort of episode, this woman whom seems to be trying to get her 15 minutes, and admitted of not being in the service, should not be confronting anybody, because PTSD is a bitch. I'm not happy about these pretenders, either. Maybe stricter off post uniform rules, like they used to have, such as not wearing field uniforms off post. Go back to wearing your class A, B or blues out if you need to advertise. In my opinion, it's getting ridiculous, for both the fakers and the accusers.

You were medically discharged from active duty due to injuries sustained overseas. Your back home with family. You escort your brother to the plane that will be taking him overseas. You stand there watching as he boards the plan. Every thought passes through your mind, and the one that stabs you the hardest is the fact that your not on that plane with him. That feeling is sickening, you feel worthless. Your place is over there, not in this civilian mess.

It's not even worth it too confront these assholes anymore as this is not even a serious enough stolen valor offense for a cop to make an arrest. I have a POS brother in law who I have nothing to do with who got orders to go to desert storm when his national guard unit got called up and he refused to go and they kicked him out. He tries to brag to me all the time about his time in desert storm and tell me how rough it is knowing full well I have multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan but I just ignore him because I know he has mental problems and he's a chickenshit asshole that refused to deploy and berating him ain't gonna make me a better combat veteran so what's the use. Years ago when I commanded a Naval Reserve Center, we had a young man come to the center to talk to the recruiter. I was asked to sit in on the meeting.

While I was sitting there, he revealed that he had been at boot camp but sent home. He claimed the training instructor expected more from him and communicated with him telepathically.

He lived in a small town and said the Navy was watching him while he walked down the street. He said he saw cars slowing down to observe him. He knew the Navy was training him for a special operation.

As we sat there, my yeoman walked in and handed me a notepad. It said “keep him talking, skipper. The police are enroute.”

They arrived and took him to the local hospital for observation.

Upon retirement with an Honorable Discharge you are allowed to wear the uniform. My grandson asks me to do so every Veterans Day at his school. Others do so as well. The students ask guestions about our service and the duties involved.Korea to the present are represented. Not all that wear an older uniform are frauds.

Those are the cammie I wore from 79 - 88. I'm 56yrs. Old and I was talking to a friend of mine, she's a sgt 1st class in the Army. When I told her I was a Field radio Operator when I enlisted. I actually gave her the wrong designation number, I told her 2531 which is aviation Ordnance. 2542 was the proper designation for jumping that prc- 77. I don't know if they still use that model these days. So it's possible to mistaken things as time goes on. Or squadrons and units and ships are decommissioned over time. So cut the guy a break.

There was a guy living on one of my grandmothers properties. He was a little mentally slow. Said a bunch of dumb stuff. Made the claim that if you were in JROTC you didnt have to go through any form of basic and that you could keep your rank (I immediately laughed internally and got in a big debate with him, but he has a childlike mentality) anyways. He kinda reminds me of this guy. He didnt commit stolen valor like him. But he had no issue in walking around town in a full gulf war era BDU. I tend to agree with the previous comments. It infuriates me to hear or witness these sick individuals disrespecting the uniform or memories of those of us,who have served. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I do no now, nor have i ever had a problem with stolen valor. To easy to google and figure out the truth.

What i have an issue with is service members lying about their service.

If a guy walks up and says I was in the rangers. A few quick questions will tell you whether he telling the truth or not.

It is the guy who doesn't get crazy with his lies that is hard to detect.

If i told you I had a bronze star, you wouldn't think any thing of it, it s a"common award" and I am not claiming that it was for valor. so why not? Not like i am claiming the DSC or MoH. who would doubt that?

It is the quiet lie that gets my goat.

I agree with the Colonel, just listening to his verbal response, you can tell he's mentally ill. Just because she's a girlfriend and has friends, she has no call to make the claim of stolen valor. If she really thinks there is a problem call the police, but using that level of language is wrong. I still have all of my old uniforms, from 1985 to 2005. I gave my first field jacket to my son, while he doesn't wear it very often, he does on occasion, does that make him someone seeking stolen valor. To me, as a woman vet, stolen valor only happens when the individual gets monetary and health benefits by falsifying records. I think had she talked to him in a proper, civilized manner, I would feel differently, but her claims could be just as false. Had she talked to him calmly she would have likely gotten farther... How do we know he's not believing he is his father who may have served in that unit? We Don't. Stolen Valor is a real issue, but this is just a man who needs mental health and a woman who needs a strong lesson in tact and diplomacy.

When I returned from Desert Storm in May 1991, a petty officer gave me a ride from Travis to SFO where I caught a united flight to Ontario. I was wearing desert cammies, and some reservist officer in civies marched up to me, produced his pink ID card, and demanded to know why I was in the airport dressed like that. I informed him to mind his own business and call the cops if he was of a mind to. Occasionally I wear a woodland cammie shirt with my name and USN tabs still affixed along with collar devices as a jacket. If anyone ever has a problem with that, they best keep it to themselves.

When I see someone in a military uniform who is obviously not currently serving, I try to remember that many SMs donate their uniforms once they are no longer needed/serviceable. Many of these individuals are very poor/ homeless. Is it really necessary to jump down their throats? Just remember civilians do not adhere to any military regulation regarding the wear/ appearance of the uniform and one day you're going to be a civilian, too.

However, claiming prior service is not a crime. it becomes a crime, fraud, when he uses his "veteran" status to gain monetarily. the Stolen Valor Act was ruled unconstitutional in 2010 in US v. Alvarez. in 2013, President Obama signed into law the Stolen Valor Act of 2013. This makes it a federal crime to fraudulently claim to be a recipient of certain military decorations or medals in order to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit.

A favorite subject of mine, Stolen Valor. From seeing the posted picture of him, he's in the wrong uniform for this century. Going around Reno in utilities is a big no-no in any service. High alert, why his he off base? Giving out your name has nothing to do with High Alert. What tickels my funny bone is the way he stands at attention, with his elbows so far out a 105 shell could pass thru them without giving a rash. Here we are again, with some ass clown making an ass out of themselves while trying to defend the Uniform.

I do not agree with the conduct exhibited by the person that is not even in the military and she lost all credibility with me when she goes on with the boyfriend and friend are n the military.

the first mistake, asking the person their name. your creating a confrontation.
the second mistake, he is wearing a BDUs which is not the current uniform within the military service (except for training or special operations )if even that anymore.
the Third mistake is confronting him, you have no idea the mental platform for which this person is operating on but yet she calls him to her vehicle.
The Fourth Mistake she made is wearing military fatigues is not against the law, and calling the police for someone standing on a street corner is a waste of time, also communicating a threat of action if she sees him walking around, not to mention the police could very we arrest her for assault.

My advice is this, if a person is not misrepresenting their self to gain favor, discount or a job, leave these people alone if their standing on a street corner minding their own business mind your own damn business and carry on, your not the damn uniform police and you have no clue if pushed what their reaction will be, as your 10 plus minutes of look what I did is simply not worth losing your life over, not to mention He very will cod have been a vet,
I do know Vets that will play you, just to see if you'll push or become physical them so they can return the favor for pure enjoyment
just walk away.

This one seems to be a mixed bag and isn’t easy to categorize as a simple stolen valor case. The guy has got some problems; I agree with that. I also agree that coming down hard on a guy with problems is not a good course of action. However, the report says he was trying to receive discounts for his upcoming wedding based on his status as a veteran which leads me to believe there was some conscience act of attempt to defraud. Receiving discounts is one of the few conditions federal law allows prosecution for under stolen valor. Coming down like this woman did may have been over the top though. Her presentation put this guy on the defensive and set the tone for confrontation. When someone has issues, you never know how they will respond when confronted in an aggresssive way. I think of stolen valor as the guys who intentionally doctor their records with the intent to receive some type of honor, financial benefit or other benefit based on the fraudulent service or service of others. The guys who claim to be SEALS or SF and walk into the VFW with the war stories trying to get free drinks. The guys who get promoted based on claimed experiences they manufactured records for and had inserted into their permanent file. The guy that goes on tv and claims to be a veteran of 2nd Ranger Bn and claiming they committed war crimes in Iraq (remember that joker?) while he was there with them. Someone like that I’d have zero problems with the matter getting ugly. But this? If you see him getting the financial benefits at the store, ask the clerk to verify his veterans status. If he’s real, he can answer some questions without saying his information is classified or he’s on “high alert”. And if it’s a guy like this, say something to him while you’re on the phone with law enforcement about a theft in progress and that it seems he may pose a threat to public safety. They’ll come out. Chances are there are a few real vets on the police department.

Well, I WANTED to serve, but was denied the opportunity to do so due to being on anticonvulsants at the time of the recruiter's visit. (That was 1980,BTW.)

The uniforms I have worn since that time have been that of The Alabama Department of Corrections, EMT-Basic thru Paramedic, and now RN.

I truly hate the idea of anyone comparing themselves to those who don't sleep at night so my family and I can.

But, I tend to agree that this gentleman has real deep-seated issues.

Although I agree that the lady was a bit over the top, I don't take lightly to people wearing MY uniform when not authorized, and we should never be "soft", and tolerant of it. The lady was probably not a mental health expert, and she is well within her rights to make it known to this man, or any other how she feels. If you see ANYONE in a public place with Marine camouflage utilities on, it's probably not authorized. Marines don't wear that uniform in public. It's a work/combat uniform, and shouldn't be worn in shopping malls and airports. We (all branches) should present a sharp, military appearance to the public, and protect that image at all times.

So many of these “Stolen Valor” videos are various mentally ill people that are seriously accosted for wearing some BDU or ACU uniform that anyone can pick up at a surplus store or Ranger Joes online. None of it is “Stolen Valor”, as defined by the Act. Most of us realize that it doesn’t cover the uniform, only medals and awards which are fraudulently leveraged for monetary gain. Additionally, because people, including these veterans making the videos, on the street are generally idiots...the local cops can’t show up and make an arrest for violating the Act. It’s a federal law, therefore requires someone with federal jurisdiction. Honestly, who cares if they wear some weird version of fatigues and pretend they’re John Rambo?

I was standing on line at a theater a few years ago when I noticed a guy in jungle fatigues, but with brass Major's insignia. Knowing that subdued insignia was worn with that uniform, I asked the individual if he was on active duty. He replied in the affirmative. I asked for his I.D., "I left it home." I called BS and called the cops when he refused to remove the insignia. The responding cop told me he couldn't do anything because it was a federal offense and outside his jurisdiction. I told the cop that there were a half dozen vets in the line that want to kick this guy's ass as soon as the cop departs. He took the guy into custody for his own safety, and drove away. I never saw him again. Mission accomplished.

Maybe they just didn’t have the nerve to serve or couldn’t or thery are battling mental illness. Leave thieve people alone continue to take care of those who can’t take care of themselves, stop making an ass out of yourself and carry on smartly! If they are are trying to pass of any of the 13 valor medals for some kind of monetary gain alert the authorities and don’t make a scene it is not job and you have no idea what kind of danger you could be putting yourself or others in because you wanted to be some kind of stolen valor hero! Like everyone on this thread I dislike those who pretend they served and did not. I also agree with the comments about the man's possible mental illness. We should feel honored that so many civilians want to protect our service so zealously, even if their methods are a bit over the top. In this case a little compassion would have gone a long way. I personally feel just about anyone who would don a uniform they did not earn the right to wear almost has to have some sort of mental issue. It's somewhat gratifying that many of those who do not share our bond of military service, feel they have missed out on being part of something larger than themselves. Having served honorably in the U.S. Military is the single highest distinction of my life. No one falsely wearing a set of clothes can take what lies in all of our hearts, nor will that honor ever reside in theirs. Finally, we need to remind ourselves and others that they are not the enemy, they are simply misguided civilians. We served to protect them as well.

A technique I used once (and worked) was to approach the Stolen Valor soldier (Airborne, SF, Ranger, Pathfinder with a Navy Cross) and ask 'so, I see you got the word?' He responded with 'what word?' I show him my military ID and inform him that I had been directed to collect the Airborne Ranger at this location for a special mission in Iraq. About this time, he asked about the mission. I informed him that I was instructed to prepare him for a HALO jump into Iraq to extract critical intelligence and that I need to contact the military police, to escort us to the nearest base for our briefing. It is at this point that he got a little worried. So, I asked if he had his military ID, to ensure we could get on base for the briefing. His response was, 'darn, I must have left it at home. Let me go get it. I'll be right back.' For some reason, the guy leaves and never comes back.

While I don't like to see people wearing a uniform they are not entitled to wear, I am sensitive to the fact that many who do so, or state that they were in the military (frequently USMC, Force Recon, Army Special Forces, Navy Seals, etc.) are not attempting to steal valor or to in any manner disrespect members of the armed forces. I had served in the Marine Corps and befriended a young man who was autistic and had some other problems. For whatever reason, he sort of looked up to me and in some ways tried to emulate me. I suspect that because of his self-image, he began telling people that he served in the Corps. No inflated war stories, no "stolen valor", no intent to "defraud" people. As sci-fi author Robert Heinein once wrote, "This sad little lizard told me he was a brontosaurus on his mother's side. I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds to happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply." However, wearing unearned rank insignia, medals, qualification badges (paratrooper wings, budweiser's, etc), or outlandishly inflating their service is very offensive to me and I will sometimes "call" them on it.

I don't think you should feel so strongly about the military in this context if you have not served yourself.

It is possible that this guy served back in the 90s and fell on hard times and is trying to achieve something for his past service. He seems to fallen to alcohol or substance abuse which is not uncommon for veterans. I might have taken the time talk to him to see what is going on in his life. Many veterans dont realize there is help available.

I come from a military family; Grandfather, Father, Brothers and also served but yet am not as offended as this lady.

I used to work with a guy that told everyone he had been a Navy Seal. We checked it out and sure enough they never heard of him. We told him we knew he was lying and to knock it off.

For some reason, we as a nation have lost all of our compassion. I am retired and with few exceptions, I don't have any of my uniform items. The best way to deal with that young man would have been to just thank him for his service and maybe offer to buy him lunch. I go to the VA monthly and some of the people I see there are suffering severely with mental issues.

First of all I'm not a fan of those that present themselves as either in the service or of prior service and have never been in the military.

Then you have people like this woman that believes it is her God forsaken duty to confront someone simply because she has a brother and friends of which were in the service, when in fact she has no more right to call out someone than a person presenting himself as service related.

For all we know This person might very well have been in the service and put on a medical, his mental stability and aptitude are highly subjective to mental illness.

But yet this lady proceeds to badger this man with her verbiage associated assault, and completely fails to realize this man has mental issues, is on drugs and could have snapped and inflicted bodily harm to her before she even knew what had taken place.

I would suggest that if your going to confront someone, do it responsibility and with respect if there is even a hint of mental instability, state your business and walk away, as you are not going to change anything and may very well find yourself being arrested for assault and end up with more problems than the person parading around in a uniform.

The last time I was on high alert, was November 22, 1963, all leaves and libertys had been cancelled.
We were told The President had been shot, even the brown- baggers couldn't go home. Where did he learn the position of attention, Thumb and forfinger grip the seam of the trousers, arm and hands do not stick out like a scare crow. Utilities shirt is to be tucked in to the trousers. If he has blousing garters for the bottom of his trousers they should be even. And what is that patch on his Utilitity shirt. I could not see any rank insigniia on his cover or his collar. If he was on high alert then he is awol.
A piss poor example of a squared away Marine. Most importand of all what is he doing in public with Utilities, that should be a class A uniform Not an old style of camoflage utilities. You could always wear them home if driving in a car but not running around in Public.

Please pardon my language here. While this poor guy may be crazier than a $hithouse rat, he is still sharp enough to choose the Marine Corps. LOL It is a shame to see people such as this man not getting the medical treatment he so desperately needs. While I appreciate and applaud those folks out there who honor us by defending our valor so vigorously, I cannot help thinking that no true Marine would have responded in such a fashion as she did. I would like to believe that my brothers and sisters would have been more compassionate in similar circumstances. Everyone is trying to be a social media hero. If I were to see someone like this I might calmly engage them in conversation and ask them about their service. I might even point out some of the flaws in their story to them. I wouldn't video it and put the exchange on youtube. After a little bit of conversation with these people it's usually pretty easy to determine they aren't all there or they wouldn't be doing what they are doing. This woman in the video is just trying to make herself look like a hero. Too many of these people out there trying to call people out for the wrong reasons. I've had friends who have been questioned who I know are retired veterans. One of them recently was on his way to a memorial day ceremony I was playing taps for, and he was wearing his old uniform, and someone stopped him to tell him that wasn't a current uniform and he shouldn't be wearing it. Of course his response was "It was the uniform I wore when I served, and I"m on my way to a ceremony to honor my fallen comrades, would you like to join me? ". Of course they declined to attend the service.

I think she went a bit over board with her verbal assault. I don't honestly have a terrible problem with him wearing a uniform with no identifying marks on it because any civilian can buy and wear that stuff . It's for sale on the market for anyone to purchase. I do however have a problem with him telling her the story he has, lies or otherwise. It's always been a sticky issue with me about people wearing that uniform because it's for sale out there. If it's going to be part of the criteria for stolen valor, then they need to make it a SM or Veteran only purchase with proof of such.
Now if he'd have had patches and such on it, then I might have an issue, and alot of questions. But she could have found herself in an aggressive or potentially violent situation had the guy been any more unstable than he clearly is. It's not like I've never called anyone out before, I have. Twice. One was clearly a fake and I called the police. In my small town it wasn't hard to find him. The other had a legit reason and story. It was his Grandfathers Peacoat from WW2. But he had taken the patches and rate off and it gets cold in MT in Winter. I had no issue with that. Say what you will about my opinion, but stolen valor needs to have CLEAR guidelines and people really need to read about it before they go calling ANYBODY on it. My two bits. Later.

Edit-I am against any poser wearing the service or dress uniforms, though. THAT is an easy discovery process to figure out if they're stolen valor posers. - she had no idea whether he was at one time a service member, and accosting him from a car, with that language was cowardly and uncalled for
- the gentlemen has some sort of mental issue, his slurred words should have alerted her to that and caused her to cease her attack
- he could have been relapsing or reliving a moment when he was in service, in which case there’s always a touch of concern and danger
- he walked to her car in that fashion bordering on threatening, again given the clear indication he likely has some sort of mental impairment

I get not wanting to see real stolen valor, but it’s not correct to accost someone in such a fashion either. I don’t know any service member who would drive someone down and “call them out” like this. Honestly, a civilian doing so is disgusting.

There is stolen valor and then there are mental health issues. He may reside in two worlds where the line of reality becomes blurred. I seriously doubt she would have been able to handle him if he truly flipped out on her. Mentally he is on high alert. His perception of the world around him could be so warped that he could have perceived her a a threat and invoked his general orders. She risked more harm to herself than any benefit of keeping him from some military discount or free meal.

Clearly, this is a disturbed individual. In fact, most such persons have other issues to begin with, and the at times ridiculous assortment of uniforms, medals, etc., they put together, too, show their true disconnect from reality. My own reaction to such people is one of sadness. While I know some folks get angry about such things, I see no point in feeling anger.

What should be done? Well, I’m not sure that what this individual is doing is illegal. If I remember correctly, the SCOTUS in the past has ruled such dressing-up as being a Freedom of Speech issue… Should law enforcement be notified? I think, likely, this is a good idea. (The person may be a resident of a care facility, etc., and may be missing from his/her facility.)

I also think that at times the very folks reacting to and/or interacting with such individuals also may have certain “issues.” I would question the wisdom of confronting a random someone in such a state with so much hostility. If he has violent tendencies, (which she has no way of knowing,) her response could have triggered a very violent outburst.

For all it is worth, I think this is a mental healthcare matter and should be handled accordingly. Let me put it this way, if the person was dressed as Jesus and was telling everyone that he is Jesus, would most of us get into an argument with such a person? (We’d figure that there is something wrong and would likely call the police so that they can check into the matter.) Why should this matter be any different?

We also do not know the individual’s personal history and know little about what may have caused such a disturbance, etc. We should be compassionate and certainly should not be aggressively confronting such people. It would be better to see if contact information could be obtained for the persons' family and/or caregivers.

In cases of readily observable (or even suspected) cases of fraud, (if the individual is actively soliciting for donations, etc.) it would be better to contact the local police department, without alerting the individual that such a thing is taking place.

This is a serious problem... How you guys can spot a stolen valor? I made some research for my Airsoft Blog (rincondelairsofter.blogspot.com - in spanish, sorry fellas) and try to explain how does it affect in the Airsoft Community, trying to draw the line between the character and the stolen valor.

The guy does have a problem. As far of the lady goes, I have no trouble with confronting posers, how ever her approach was out of line. If you confront these situations. Suppress your anger and your foul language. Keep it short and then notify the proper authority. You have no idea what the confrontation could develop into. It could lead into a physical confrontation with dire consequences for the confronter, and maybe even legal problems. I base my opinion on a few hundred interrogations.

They both have issues. Her Vertical Video Syndrome, which is curable, and his mental health issues. I don't see stolen valor here. He does not appear to be attempting to gain any financial advantage or benefit and most adults, even civilians, can see quickly see he has mental health issues.

Stolen Valor, to me, falls into three categories.
1. The most egregious are those attempting to benefit financially claiming to have served in a capacity they did not. I would place those who were admin clerks claiming to be SEALs or Rangers into the same category, honestly. If someone is claiming service they did not perform, that's fraud plain and simple.
2. The mentally ill. This category is sad, but I give them a pass because they have much bigger issues in life to deal with than having me be butt-hurt over their wearing of my uniform. They want to be like me and never can, so they play dress up.
3. Kids, re-enactors, LARPers, and others who wear uniforms for fun. Knock yourselves out, boys and girls. I did the same thing as a kid, and even as a teenager. My son and his friends wore my old USMC cammies when they did paintball and bb-gun wars. They weren't representing themselves as soldiers, Marines, or otherwise. Just kids being kids.
So, I always walk a fine line when I meet someone claiming military service. I know enough about the military to ferret out the liars, but then, it gets tricky finding the motivation behind the uniform. Is the person trying to claim service to gain respect or financial gain? Are they just mentally deficient and in some fantasy where they will be regarded as "Normal" because they are in uniform? It's for this last reason that I typically just leave them be unless it's very clearly someone trying to get something pretending to be someone they're not.

He could me a former Corpsman with some serious issues. Yeah, confronting him like that was not the best way. Moving on is probably best, leaving him alone. It has been shown that police are ill equipped to handle mental health issues without dangerously escalating the situation. More often than not, the person experiencing these issues ends up beaten or worse. Combine that with a possible stolen valor report, and you're looking at a minimal "rough" arrest.

I believe the guy exhibited mental health issues and that she was more concerned with making herself look like an expert on the matter! Maybe offering to help the guy out would have been a better path and a way to get his name etc, without such a tragic display of disgust and disdain for the guy. He may be a Vet: A Vet with issues, memories, data,etc! Many Vets have PTSD issues and need help! Maybe she should volunteer at the VA, if she is so concerned about the Veterans! I see needy vets almost every day and especially at the VA!
I also believe that her language was deplorable and when she expressed it in public, it would turn many people off, and really make them have questions about her state of mind.. She should have just called the police right there, wait for them to get there to make a complaint. Most Police Officers would love to get a hold of him. Our Daughter is a Phoenix AZ Police officer of 17 years. Her hubby, my Son in-law is a disabled P.V. AZ Police Officer, former Army Spec Forces Medic, then Marine, then P.O. would have loved to talk to him!
A lady does not use that kind of language. A Soldier that would use that type of language, in public, would not be exercising good judgement, or representing the Military in a positive way, and I think, be guilty of violating the Military's Code of Conduct! A good Officer or in-listed personnel, is much more Professionalism, when He or She exhibits self control, when dealing, with subordinates and other and all people in general!

Anyone whoever served would immediately know this guy is fake. 1st.....Marines don't wear utilities in public period regardless of timeframe. 2nd.....he was obviously drunk, high or mentally challenged so that should have been enough to deescalate the situation. What was so important of knowing his name? He wasnt going to go take off the uniform and for that matter if he was any of the above he may not even remember. Lastly.....She let her emotions get away and understandable if she indeed had family members sacrifice their lives. In this situation both were wrong it just may be that one of them was reacting to whatever they were on or their mental state and the other was reacting with their heart

#1. The accuser went about this the wrong way. If she was concerned about “stolen valor”, she should go through proper channels, allowing appropriate authorities to validate or invalidate her allegation.
#2. When asked for his name, he responds he can’t tell her because he’s on “high alert”? I’ve never heard that before & it tells me right away this gentleman might have some other issues than just wearing military fatigues.
#3. I couldn’t see any Marine insignia, stripes or medals on the man’s clothing. For all I know, he’s merely wearing what looks like surplus fatigues from the Army-Navy Store. Is that a crime?

Just based on what I saw, with no other evidence, I’d tentatively conclude this lady has a serious control problem.

We all have to understand what stolen valor is in a legal meaning. The US Supreme Court had ruled that the wearing of the uniform is not stolen valor but freedom of speech. Stolen valor comes with the meaning of fraud. It is not fraud unless the person in question is trying to gain personally by using the status of a veteran which the party is not legally entitled to. We seem to worry about people who are not veterans wearing the uniform but condone many veterans across this country who owns used military stores who sell the uniforms to anyone who has money to buy them.

His service number is 11 digits but service numbers have not been used since 1/1972 by the Navy & Marines and they used to start with a letter. Since then they use your SSN. The guy definitely has problems. Plus I did not know that if you are 55 you can be called back to active duty?

To be honest, I'm afraid to be called just for wearing my Navy retired cap or my t-shirts. I'm diagnosed with PTSD and I tried suicide and ended with a brain injury and ended with speech and memory problems,I don't go out much and when I do, besides my panic attacks, I'm worried if something like this happens, I have forgotten a lot of my memories and if somebody starts to yell at me I wouldn't know what to do. I know, I don't like stolen valor either, but people forget the problems that a lot of us have, there's have to be a better way to end this problem, but for now, I prefer to be alone in my room.

The worst act of Stolen Valor I have ever heard of was a preacher in Hampton Virginia some years ago. He had somehow persuaded a personnel specialist, probably a GS4 or so, (Ft Monroe had a lot of civilians in what were normally enlisted positions) to give him an ID Card as a retired colonel and somehow, it was reported, arranged to get retirement pay. He got away with it for a number of years and probably would have gotten away with it longer but he tried to get himself promoted to Brigadier General. Needless to say, that resulted in an investigation that revealed he had never been been in the Army, much less a Colonel. I don't recall how much money he had received over the years, but when you consider how much he got away with in unearned benefits alone it's absolutely maddening. It made the national news, which was where I learned of it. It has been quite a while ago because Ft Monroe has been closed for ten years or more. Now that was a case of profiting from impersonating a soldier.

ok as far as the out dated uniform goes we the discharged veterans as I understand it we can ware the uniform of our service date as I do mine is 1981 to 1987 BDU'S with black polished boot's to fit in with the active duty that I sometimes do Ceremony's with ill ware the tan boots with my BDU'S or my VETERANS dress uniform as in my profile photo

Glad she called him out! An old Vietnam buddy and I were touring Civil War battlefields in Virginia. We were both wearing Marine covers. A guy walks up and says "Semper Fi"! We got to talking and asked his Vietnam unit. We were surprised when he claimed he was in Lima 3/1 in 1967 & 1968. Bill and I were in Kilo 3/1, so asked if he was there on 27 Dec 67. He said "all those days blend together"! We were shocked because on the 27th Lima's CO, XO and 15 other Marines were KIA. We both said, "you weren't there"! He hatted up right then. We couldn't believe that he picked Lima Company as his fake unit.

I have known people like this, I usually ask questions but never challenge them because over the years I have learned that there are many things that have been true that seem impossible. I was born deaf in my left ear and have been challenged. I have the paperwork including my military ID. Unless someone is acting in counter interest to American values, I just ignore them. During the 80's I allowed an old drunk to live on the back of my property in a house trailer I owned. He had been in merchant marines. He worked for a company that had ties to the CIA. He told stories about going on patrols in Vietnam with CIA operatives. The stories were obviously lies. That was all he had, I let him stay for years until he died. He never hurt anyone and he and my favorite dog loved each other. My children accepted him as an uncle type.

I believe anyone who pretends to have served in any branch of the military have more than one screw loose. The issue of Stolen Valor came up several years ago, and I think it ended up in court. Unfortunately, the judge decided this was a freedom of speech issue, can't remember the exact wording. Maybe someone has a more updated decision to share.
