There's a ton of great content out there dealing with military subject matter (training / operations-related, motivational, entertaining & educational, historical, etc.); the idea is to have a fun and thought-provoking discussion, and to learn a thing-or-two while we're at it. If you can remember details but not the title; no worries, just post a description, and we'll activate the RP network to help find it. Here we'll discuss those defining sources that influence us, our culture, as well as public perception and opinion... sort of a representation of the "art-imitates-life, life-imitates-art" concept. Well, there's certainly some memorable content out there, I have my favorites and I'm sure that that you all do too. I haven't been able to find again, but I saw what I thought was one of the funniest videos of a soldier in Iraq. It was several years ago, and he was filming a video to send home to the family. He was walking around inside what was apparently his work space inside a tent explaining what he was doing in theater when there was this deafening explosion which caused him to flinch. Once he regained his composure, he looked at the camera and said, "That's our stuff going out. I know because I'm still here." He was laughing. The guy with him was laughing. It was just funny.

RESTREPO. It isnt Hollywood, it is real and it didnt just deal with the facts, it brought out the emotion in the service members interviewed in the film. I was staioned in Afghanistan during part of the film. Remember hauling sling loads of building materials into the valley to help build the OPs.

I'm starting to like the new show on FOX called "Enlisted". It's about these three brothers who are in the army together all stationed at the same base, Fort McGee in Florida (which is not a real base). It's really just a show about the everyday lives of soldiers on Rear D.

If you can watch "Making the Cut" and not be motivated you should not reenlist!

It doesn't show it all of course, but it will give you a new perspective on what these guys go through to earn their positions in our SOF units. Really opens your eyes, as far as, our sister services that we dont see on a daily basis.

I think the best documentaries are the surviving the cut series on different military schools. Shows the public a small portion on what it takes to be some of the hardest military specialties such as the spec ops community. Show the sweat and blood people will shed to be the best at there profession.

I really enjoy "Rules of Engagement." It is a very thought provoking movie that I use in Leadership Development classes. You will on average have a split down the class as to whether Samuel L. Jackson's character did the right thing or not. Generates some very good discussion to get young leaders to think about the impact of their actions.

I've got to go a little wide of center on this one.

My favorite movies:
Saving Private Ryan - My grandfather was a Soldier in Europe in WWII. As a young boy, I knew a couple of "old guys" who had been Purple Heart recipients on D-Day. I'll never forget them, or how they impacted my life as a young man. Every time I see the opening scene of that movie, I think of those men.

No Man's Land - Sometimes, war can really create some of the oddest of circumstances. This movie goes back to Bosnia and Herzegovina and shows one of those odd circumstances.

Das Boot - I think that the movie is a subtle reminder that even though one nation may be at war with another, the combatants are all human beings, experiencing it through their own lens.

My favorite documentary:
Restrepo - Just has to be seen. I think it should be required viewing. Life at a remote COP in Eastern Afghanistan. I won't spoil anymore than that. It is available in many different streaming services.

TV show:
I've already said that it is NCIS.

I just recently watched the Ken Burns WWII documentary simply called, "The War." If you have Amazon Prime you can watch it there for free. As far as WWII documentaries go this has got to be the best one I've seen to date. He covers so many different aspects of what life was like for servicemen and civilians. He even delves into the POW situations stemming from Bataan, Japanese-American internment camps and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the sociopolitical atmosphere of the military at that time. It is a seven part series so it takes some time to get through but it is well worth it. I learned a lot.

I am partial to "Band of Brothers" and as is the case with most of us, I am sure, I tend to pick apart military films. Recently I watched "A Few Good Men" again. It bugged me that they implied a Marine Lieutenant (Kendrick/O-1 or O-2) outranked a Navy Lieutenant (Kaffee/O-3). Also that the two Marines on trial were convicted and dishonorably discharged for Conduct Unbecoming (Article 133 UCMJ). Article 133 is Conduct Unbecoming an Officer (Commissioned/NCO/Warrant). It would not apply to a PFC and Lance Corporal. I suppose this mean I just don't fully enjoy military films when they have these sorts of problems.

Film: Saving Private Ryan. I doubt any hollywood movie will ever be able to as accurately recreate the brutality of war as Steven Speilberg did with the opening Normandy invasion sequence.

Documentary: The War by Ken Burns. It's a fantastic seven part TV documentary about WWII from the American perspective. A close second is the film documentary Restrepo which covers an American platoon of soldiers during their 15 month deployment in Korangal Valley, Afghanistan.

TV Series: Obviously Band of Brothers and The Pacific are going to get the most votes in this category, so I'll vote for Generation Kill. No TV show/movie/anything-other-than-a-documentary ever get everything right, but this is one of the most accurate portrayals of the military I've ever seen on TV. Even little things like the little chirp military radios make are there, and it's the little things such as those that sold me on the show. It's about a group of marines during the initial invasion of Iraq.

Book: I know books weren't explicitly mentioned by the thread author MAJ Burns, but I've got to toot my own horn here a bit. The Good Soldiers by David Finkel is a book about 2-16 IN during their 15 month deployment to Baghdad, Iraq for the surge. I say I'm tooting my own horn here because this happens to have been my unit and covers my first deployment. I find it pretty awesome that a portion of my life has been chronicled in such a way.

I've seen pretty much every movie/documentary/TV series out there but I have to say my favorite was the series "Inside Combat Rescue" from the National Geographic Channel. It was a series that truly hit home since I was over in Afghanistan around the same time the show was shot and it seemed all too familiar. It was also the first time the Air Force PJ's told their story.

How can you pick just one? I remember watching (on the serious side) 12 O'clock High, Combat and Rat Patrol (and on the less serious side) Hogan's Hero's, McHale's Navy, F Troop and MASH and thinking each one was the best at the time. As for the movies its even harder to pick, one of note being The Green Berets. And then there's Patton (as mentioned on earlier posts), The Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan. But if really pressed I'd have to say that films like Fat Man and Little Boy or On the Beach (not necessarily a military film in the strictest sense but it was based on the aftermath of military actions) to be my favorites... what can I say I was an NBC NCO.

Well, now, this is a good one. Now hold onto your brass (officers), and chevrons (enlisted) Or anchors for Chief Petty officers. Because this list will be LONG....

Bombers B-52, Set at Castle AFB in Merced, CA. Tells the story of when the base received the first B-52's to enter service (B-52B). Has Karl Malden in it. (I was stationed at Castle in the early 90's when I first saw this movie on TV. The movie was filmed on Base in 1957. Whats funny is, my dorm room looked out at one of the scenes that was used in the movie. Since the old flightline came up to within at least 100 yards from my dorms since the old hangers were still standing.)

A Gathering of Eagles, A good movie about SAC with Rock Hudson. Tells the story of a base in CA that just had its Wing Commander Sacked for failing an ORI and Rock Hudson's character is the replacement. He has 90's to get the base and wing whipped back into shape.

SAC, with Jimmy Stewart. Tells the story of a baseball player recalled to active duty to serve as a B-36, and eventually as a B-47 pilot.

Band of Brothers- Enough said. We all know its about Easy company of the 506th PIR of the 101st Airborne Division.

The Longest Day, about the D-day landing from its conception to its execution.

A Bridge to Far, its about Operation Market Garden and what went wrong or right during the operation. (Band of Brothers also showcases it during and the aftermath)

Flying Leathernecks, About a Marine Corps squadron during WWII.

Sands of Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers, about the battle for Iwo Jima. I will also mention Letters from Iwo Jima since it is about the Japanese perspective of the battle.

Midway, About the lead and the battle that took place 6 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tora, Tora, Tora, The attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Bridge at Remagen. About the taking of the last intact bridge across the Rhine River before it could be destroyed.

Victory at Sea documentary series. Its about the naval battles that took place.

I am sure there are more, but they are not coming out or I can not remember them.

I understand that SSG Stevens has already hit Band of Brothers in the thread. However, I felt the need to expound on this one. Every once in a while the box set will be broken out in my family. We spent our Christmas holiday this past year in a condo way above Saint Mary's Glacier in Colorado. Both the condo and the weather were conducive to relaxing indoors. My twins broke out the box and proceeded to watch Band of Brothers in one sitting. Any of you that have seen it, know this is a pretty impressive feat. Granted, they are now 21 and there was a little beer involved, but still impressive.

Guys if you join a newsgroup ie easynews, gigganews, many are out here. You can get unlimited downloads of whatever movies shows you want for between $9 & $20 dollars a month. as long as you keep the files in digital format and don't share them you are legal. Someone has posted every movie or TV show you can think of from "all quiet on the western front" to "Lone Survivor" I have a 2TB drive with every war movie I can think of. I kind of odd because the only movies I will watch multi times are war moves. I think I've seen "Darby's Rangers" and "The Longest Day" 50 times each and that's a conservative estimate. Check it out guys many of the newsgroups have free trails.

I love almost all military themed movies, but my favorite is the Band of Brothers series. First of all, Tom Hanks is a huge supporter of our WWII vets. Also, I really enjoyed hearing the vignettes interspersed within the episodes where the actual Soldiers that were there talked about what it was like. Finally, I am a paratrooper and I really connected with the story and the characters.

Honorable mentions: The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, Patton, and The Big Red One.

As far as documentaries go, The Ghost Army is my favorite. I am interested in Military Deception, and this is the story of a group of Soldiers in WWII Europe that made a real and solid contribution to the Allied victory using deception.

Tough one as I like so many:

"Kelly's Heroes" - love the whole "band of misfits" story & plenty of great one-liners. An Eastwood classic.

"The Dirty Dozen" - Lee Marvin as a rebellious officer with authority issues - 'nuff said.

"Patton" - A movie about a great man, what's not to like?

"Gettysburg" superb story and great ensemble cast. Kudos to Jeff Daniels.

"Band of Brothers" - simply GREAT.

"Blackhawk Down" - was there 6 months prior to the battle, great job recreating everything, fantastic and real battle scenes.

"The Green Berets" - the Duke, 'nuff said.

"Saving Private Ryan" - Fantastic realism.

"Stripes" - see the extended cut!

Every Military History Documentary, I'm a Junkie for the Stuff, Anything with a Navy Theme, Go Figure and of course the TV Show and Movie MASH since I came from a Military Community that was very similar, Technicians, Scientist, Geeks and not really that Military. My first born is named William Christopher for the Actor who Portrayed Father Mulcahy on the show.

Saving Private Ryan provided a realistic view of combat in the scenes where they landed on Omaha Beach. All that was missing was the smell. Another film tha captures the psychological aspect of war is Apocalypse Now, and adapation of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The imagery gets darker as the story progresses until the end when the evil in men's hearts is revealed in the most primal of all instincts, kill to survive, and the picture is nearly black to illustrate the black heart. I also like the documentary, "The World At War", released in the 1970s but often aired on the Military and History Channels.

This is one of my favorite movies that pays the deserved respect and honor for a fallen soldier. It depicts the escorted trip from the battlefield to his final resting place. This is most significant to me because I am an Air Force ICU nurse and my last deployment I worked as a Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) nurse. My job was to fly around in austere environments, pick up the critically wounded, and transfer them to either Kuwait or Balad, where they would then fly to Germany. On one of my missions, I was on a C-130 caring for a critical patient. In the stanchion behind him was a flag draped coffin. The significance of my deployment hit home at that moment. That was someone's mother, father, son, daughter, cherished and loved family member. A few months after my deployment, I discovered that one of my close friends was his supervisor. I will never forget this hero!

Combat was where I got my inspiration to learn French and German, which I still speech haltingly today.
My German in better than my French.
There was a lot of German spoken Rat Patrol also.
I my grade school there was a big push to learn Spanish, but after spending 2 years not learning Spanish I thought is was time for a change.

I have a couple.

My father, being a huge classic movie fan, introduced me to classic cinema. I was always interested in the WWII movies. My favorites include, Stalag 17, The bridge over River Qui, The Longest Day, Casablanca, Patton, and 13 Rue Madelene.

As I got older I enjoyed MASH, Stripes, and Private Benjamin.

Since I have been in the military I have seen and loved, Blackhawk Down, The Hurt Locker, and Zero Dark Thirty.

But my all time favorite is hands down Band of Brothers. When I graduated from Airborne school it was common practice for WWII paratroopers to attend the graduations. As I was standing in formation an older gentleman approached me and started to recount his jumps….Normandy and Market Garden….I was in awe. It was a history lesson to be sure. When I saw Band of Brothers I imagined that that little old man was there. Can you imagine the guts those guys had? Needless to say I asked him if he would pin my wings on, which he did.

In the documentary realm:

Atomic Cafe: it is spliced together training films and archival footage from the 40s, 50s, and 60s of nuclear tests, training for WWIII, and training films. Struck me as odd how little we understood. Also funny as famous actors from the era appear throughout (watch for Ward Cleaver aka Hugh Beaumont). Best watched after reading Atomic America by Todd Tucker.

Soldier for Hire: shows a couple different sides to the age old question of mercenaries. Was on the History Channel before we got 24hr pawn shop coverage. depicts clear examples of when PMCs have worked. Best watched after reading "Corporate Warriors" by PW Singer.

Lost Honor: USMC sexual assault prevention video. Well done and effective. We used for our Sharp training. It is on YouTube.

1st would have to be The Unit. Pissed me off when they cancelled it.
2nd is Tour of Duty, the problem with that show was it bothered my father to watch it with me.

Mini Series was Winds of War and War and Remembrance both by Herman Wouk.

And my favorite military comedy was M*A*S*H.

OMG! Do you have time? At 71 I have had the time to view many films/videos, some good, some bad, most mediocre. My problem is too much knowledge. What most others enjoy, I can't because I'm too distracted by the technical details. Sloppy salutes. Atomic hand grenades. Contrived and convoluted history. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The good: What should I name? Band of Brothers. Patton. Saving Private Ryan. Any of the countless WWII propaganda films and documentaries. War in the Pacific.

The bad: Almost anything made about the war in Vietnam, especially documentaries produced by newsmen and organizations promoting an antiwar ideology.

The really great: Strangely, just one does stand out. It reeks of authenticity. The smell of fear almost overpowers the audience. Das Boot

I could name several, but off the top of my head I always enjoyed watching Mail Call with R. Lee Ermey. I love the way he can present/instruct and demonstrate the awesomeness of past, present, and future military weapons or anything in general. I feel it's a great educational, historical, or even a comical way to pass the time, if you're into that sort of thing.

I have two, "We Were Soldiers" and the HBO Series "Band of Brothers".

The first I think was Mel Gibson's best role. The second, by far the best series HBO has ever produced...and I am a big "Game of Thrones" fan.

Both had great examples of the importance of leadership. "Band" also showed examples of poor leadership, it wasn't a complete fluff piece is what I am getting at I guess.

Col Private RallyPoint Member 1LT Sandy Annala When I watched the Pacific and the Medal of Honor winner died, he did so unceromonially and that to me, makes his story all the greater. He was willing to put all that he had on the line for a task few in their right mind would relish. Sgt John Basilone made me proud to be a veteran.

After being spit on and cussed at, this felt good and to know that fighting personnel did this for me and all of us. How cool is that? Along with my officer uncle who was the most decorated man in one of the world wars. And that tank at the VFW in honor of him, I knew the service was right for me.

Saving Private Ryan. - Two scenes really poked the "pay attention" button. First one was where Ryan has said that he's not going back and they tell him they lost 3 men getting to him. He looks at them and asks "What were their names?" and near the end when Tom Hanks tells Ryan "earn this!" I don't know who wrote the script, but they got to the heart of it.
And Patton - "Compared to war, all other forms of human endeavor pale to insignificance!"

The most recent non-fiction piece was released by the VA OIG stating that their panel did not review the deaths in Phoenix with medical standards that would be required by the Arizona State Medical Board, and that they could not definitively link the veteran's deaths with care, or lack thereof, by the VA.

Hmmm, CIA bio/chem tests, Atomic bomb exposures, Agent Orange, GWI, and a few other issues had similar sewage that the OIG just used...

The documentary Tom Hanks put together with the Vietnam POW's. It was amazing. Also, any of their books. Robbie Risner, Bud Day, John McCain, Eddie Alvarez, Stockdale and many others have written books on their time in Hanoi and nothing else I have seen or read really gives you the full picture of what they went through. I passed Day's book to an airman in my office and it ended up spreading like wildfire. They were fascinated and I couldn't order books fast enough for these kids. It's a great way to teach your airmen some history and to show them what true leaders and heroes look like.
