My favorite I have picked up when giving that "you messed up but you kinda did some good things" speech was giving them the good and following up with "however ...comma..." Picked that up from 1sgt Robinson at red stone arsenal

Soldier runs into office:
"Hey SGT! Where's the Duty van?"

Sergeant's reply:
"I'll play your little game, where IS the duty van?"

For some reason, the instant retort made me laugh my butt off and I still use a variation of his reply to this day, twelve years later..

I had a 1SG who used to tell all the soldiers whom in-processed into the unit that he had three rules for them, and thru would succeed and even thrive under his command.
1. Never pass up the opportunity to shut the f&@k up. Everyone around you has t-shirts with more combat time than you have, period, in this man's army.
2. You are already a hero. If you want medals, all you have to do is to do your job, without being told to, and you will shortly outrank everyone around you.
3. Stupid people lose sleep. You only get paid, and have time allotted, to touch it once. Anything else will happen on your time, because dollars don't wait on dimes. "E-8's don't wait on E-3's"... Ever!

I learned my favorite from my father. "F*** 'em all but 9. 6 to carry the casket, 2 for road guards, and 1 to count cadence and remind the 6 not to drop the damn box by hollering 'your brother is in there, give him a smooth ride.'"
