On this day in 1865 forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman were continuing their march to burn the southern states crops, cities and livelihood as they conducted the 19th century version of total war.
Columbia was burned to the ground as confederate soldiers, citizens & slaves in Charleston, S.C. evacuated

How about the destruction of Chicago and Seattle by fire? San Francisco by earthquake? Galveston Texas by storm. All these, including Atlanta and Columbia were rebuilt by their citizens. Now look at New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina. How long ago? Still waiting for the government to do it for them. What the hell happened to America?

While all of the above would make for a fast paced news day in modern society, I think that the burning of a major city is a huge tragedy. I wish we could apply the same ROE to ISIL that applied during the "Civil" War. (Civil in quotes to denote that civility was the very first fatal casualty of this war). There have been many times throughout American History that we as people have committed horrible atrocities against each other. The burning of civilian population centers has to be near the top.

He did what had to be done to break the will of the South, no more no less. The South had its own fare share of people who committed atrocities.
