My dad retired as a LTC in the Army a bit over 30 years ago. He's always been proud that I made the Army a career, but I always chuckle at what he told me when I was promoted to LTC.

"Just remember, I have date of rank on you!"

Of course, when I became select I let him know by telling him that he didn't have DOR on me any more :) Response by COL Randall C. made Jul 11 at 2014 4:42 PM 2014-07-11T16:42:39-04:00 2014-07-11T16:42:39-04:00 MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca 205465

My family has a proud history of service from WWI on. I am the first officer in the family and at this point, my dad, my mom's brother and I are the only surviving veterans in the family. I hope that someday one of my 3 children will look towards the military for an opportunity but I would never push it on them. Duty and service are a responsibility and there are other ways besides the military to fulfill that responsibility, A career in the service is a calling. My grandfather is buried in the cemetery there. He died in a plane crash during a test flight as a captain back in the 50's. I was able to put a set of my captain bars on his grave. I still have a pair of his in my office.
My family has LONG military history. I was born with the last name "Murphy" - Audie Murphy was my step-grandfather's cousin.
