For former Army 79R's, what civilian occupations are most compatible with your skills and experience?

Sales and corporate recruiting are the most obvious. I have found that civ ed + experience as a BN Ops NCO and MEPS SGC prepared me for a career in Export Compliance in the logistics industry. Regulation research, attention to detail, and quality control are just a few skills that directly translate. Any other examples?

I'm currently a Director of Recruitment for a for profit college. Same thing as far as military recruiting.

Following as I retire soon and running into issue where civilian employers do not see that recruiting experience is equivalent to sales in civilian sector as I am looking into sales management positions.

Unfortunately, that is a difficult route. Most places want you to start at the bottom with commissioned sales. Have known of former 79R's getting good sales jobs and moving up fast though. Just wasn't for me.

What route did you choose to go, SFC J Fullerton? The former 79Rs you know still with those careers and now in management? Fast as in months or still a couple years for them to move up?

SFC Ronnie Simonsen - I got a bachelors degree in business admin before I retired, and then a technical cert in logistics/supply chain management. Several different avenues in that industry, but was able to get referred to a position as an export compliance specialist with an international logistics company. A lot of what I do is very similar to working in BN Ops and MEPS. Need to know how to research regulations, train others, create SOPs, and catch other peoples errors. I did interview for a few sales and corporate recruiting positions before I got this job, but had no luck. I knew a couple guys who got into pharmaceutical sales and did well, but it is commissioned sales. One of my best friends is a regional sales manager for a food distributor. He retired in 06, started with selling cars, then moved on to sales in food distribution. Now with his 3rd food distribution company, but has moved up in position each time. He had to gain specific industry experience to get where he is at now. I just got out in '13, this is my first job and been here 2 years next week.
