For the counseling dates on an Army NCOER, does this counseling need to be documented?

Follow the simple rule that I found to be true both in the military and civilian life.

If it isn't in writing, it didn't happen.

I must say that I find it slightly upsetting that this kind of question must be asked by a senior noncommissioned officer. The entire NCOER process is something that is taught in WLC (BLC now I believe) to Soldiers at ranks as low as PFC. As an E8, I find it difficult to believe that you have not been a rater/senior rater for many of NCOs prior to this and it just makes me wonder just how much has been incorrectly in this process because of a lack of knowledge of the correct way to do things.

MSG- I am astounded. 1. If you are counseling your subordinates monthly, or even quarterly- you should be using some form of counseling statement. 2. This form should be signed by both of you and dated- twofold- it shows that the Sm was counseled and what was said/the date of the counseling. 3. With these 4 or 12 statements in hand filling out an NCOER is a snap and damn hard to the SM to rebut it. If you as a senior NCO re not on top of these things, I guarantee you subordinates will not be.

Having been on RP for a long time now, I've seen some ignorant questions asked (SFC who couldn't understand why he was being booted for AWOL), to folks complaining that this site isn't strictly just for troops to disseminate military only information (as if no one else on this site was/is military), or "why are there civilians on here". There are plenty of times to be a dickhead to others, and then there are times like this where a "simple" question is asked (a valid one with all the changes that are occurring in the ranks), that doesn't merit being a douche in your responses.

Be. Know. Do. Fairly simple, easy to do, even in retired/ETS status.

The oath doesn't have a expiration date.

"No one is more professional than I"...that includes helping your fellow NCO get answers and not degrading your fellow NCO's. The Creed doesn't either.

This is always a great topic to discuss as clearly it's not getting disseminated throughout the ranks enough. I'm going through the same situation with my previous rater and my NCOER.

I guess I’m old fashioned, I like to counsel my NCOs every 3 months, so the know where they at and want do they have to improve on. And if I have to let them have it on the final review, they know why, because they were counsel on it, and I have a signature to proof it. I know is hard sometimes because of training and everything else is going on at unit level, but not impossible, and if you aim for 4 but end up with 3, is fine with me. The ncos need to know we’re they stand, they need feed back from the seniors.
