My younger brother is currently finishing AIT(at Fort Leonard Wood) and he said he has no idea if he’ll be deployed overseas or not. He signed a 3 year contract and my mom is going to be such high anxiety if he goes overseas for that time(which I’m sure we have to learn to accept now as a military family). I’m new to army language but learning so sorry in advanced. Overseas deployment could be operational deployment in support of theater support missions or to a combat theater like Afghanistan, Syria, or Iraq.

Units are identified through a JCS sourcing process based on COCOM requirements. A unit rotate through Readiness postures where they are available to COCOM commanders on a cycle. Short answer: it depends. Deployments range from 6 months to 18months Response by LTC Jason Mackay made Jan 3 at 2019 3:39 PM 2019-01-03T15:39:52-05:00 2019-01-03T15:39:52-05:00 SSG Private RallyPoint Member 4256904

He will find out where he will be assigned towards the end of OSUT. It is possible his first duty station could be oversees. When I went through there were only 5 or 6 guys (12B) out of an entire company that got duty stations oversees. Once he knows his first duty station, and reports he will have a better understanding of whether or not the unit is slotted for a deployment. But, take note, being stationed oversees is not the same as being deployed. So if he received Germany as his first duty station, he will most likely be there for the entirety of his first contract. If he receives Ft. Drum, and then his unit deploys its is 6 to 18 months, depending on the mission. No sense is getting worked up about anything just yet. Best of luck and welcome to the Army family. I graduated Infantry OSUT then Airborne school, got to my first unit then boom deployed all in my first year of being in the Army. Now that I'm back most of it is rumors (could be months or years) and even if I did know I was deploying soon it goes against OPSEC for me to say anything. However with the recent talks/plans of pulling out of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan I'm guessing deployments are about to be scarce.
Best of luck and welcome to the Army family Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 3 at 2019 5:14 PM 2019-01-03T17:14:17-05:00 2019-01-03T17:14:17-05:00 2019-01-03T14:36:57-05:00
