The Fayetteville community is also growing. The housing community in the base is good for what I have seen and especially since they have been remodeling a lot of the older Housing. It's all about perspective. We were at ft. Riley and ft. Irwin before we came here and we love it here. Housing isn't that bad. Nice community centers. And off post utilites are expensive. I've lived on post for over a year now and I've paid less that $75 the whole time I've been here. Only crappy part is that I'm a ssg, living in e6 and over housing, but they did a special offer and now i live next to a spc. So i pay 600 more for the same house. So, I am almost 10 years removed, big and similar to many places since housing went private in 2004. New, or new renovated on post. Lots off post, check out your school districts first, and then look off post. Units are closed, or closing, so I would expect the waiting lists to be small, and lots to be available off post. I would check out Housing on the Garrison www site. Off post housing is decently priced with large amounts of square footage. I highly recommend Raeford, Sandford or Hope Mills if you want a big house for a decent price. Spring Lake and Fayetteville pricing isn't bad but crime is higher in Fayetteville and Spring Lake just opened their police department a few years ago so it's pretty small, use to be a lot of crime there. I was stationed there July 2008 to March 2015. The post itself is a by the book post so stay within regulations and no one bothers you. When you check in get a list of the black listed areas they're a lot actually that many don't know about I'm the area. Bragg for 3 years, but I live in the area now. We live in the Anderson Creek area. Our address is Spring Lake, but we are outside the Spring Laker proper area by about 8-10 miles. A lot of military live in our community and they are building a second section to it that is geared towards first time buyers.

As far as Bragg is concerned, as others have mentioned, it is what you make it. As an AGR and a leg, I would hear rumors that Reservists were treated less than, and legs were definitely treated less than human. I never encountered that. In fact, it was an airborne unit that adopted me as one of their own and I was always treated with respect. And no it was not because of rank. Like anywhere else, you will be treated how you allow yourself to be treated. I like Bragg and I'm glad we still live here. You will have plenty of people willing to help you out with whatever you need. Ultimately you make the assignment what it is worth. I lived in Sanford away from post. It was nice up there. My buddy lives in hope mills, really nice area. And raeford is not bad either. IMO stay away from the Fayetteville area of possible. The houses outside of the city limits are much nicer and inexpensive. Hope you like your next assignment. Good luck. I really don't want to be stationed anywhere else for a variety of personal and professional reasons.

If you do your research, there are lots of great places to live in Fayetteville. Haymount, Murray Hills, Forest Lake are all great neighborhoods and have lots of different ranges in housing sizes and prices. There is some property crime, but not much in the way of violent crime in those areas.

I think one of the best kept secrets are the neighborhoods in Haymount closer to downtown (on either side of Martin Luther King Jr Freeway between Hay Street and Bragg Boulevard). The area has a diverse community of people as well as it is walking distance to downtown. Despite what someone might have told you who was here a decade ago, downtown Fayetteville has really came along nicely. I would recommend you travel as much as you can and go visit those places on the east coast or wherever that you haven't before. I made the mistake of not traveling very much and staying local, I even moved further out just so I could be away from Fayetteville. I cant stand the place and I think had I gone to Florida and left North Carolina more often I would of loved it there. The base is huge, which probably has more negatives attached to it because of the sheer size then positives. I would recommend you look at raeford/spring lake for a place to live as the other gates are a nightmare to get into unless you leave 30mins or earlier then the time you need to arrive at formation.

If you love outdoors stuff you will love being there (hiking, swimming, rafting, camping etc). Wish you best of luck, feel free to message me I was there from 2006-2014. They have areas that are not fit for decent people. The draw back to choosing other cities is the drive; none of that matters to much if you have to drive the Yadkin 500 to get to division. Cutting through pope AFB used to be a great option unless it was locked down for whatever reason. It would take you the backway to Old Divison.
