The FM is the guide for commanders on how to plan their unit's PRT. It doesn't say that you must use under load cross country running anymore than it mandates Stength Training Circuits.

Should units whose METL features heavy lifting, foot marches under load, and traversing obstacles train those things? Most definitely. 1LT Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 23 Dec 2013 17:22:25 -0500 2013-12-23T17:22:25-05:00 Response by 1LT Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 23 at 2014 8:27 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/ft-hood-the-battle-of-no-iba-run-policy-vs-fm7-22-which-requires-a-load-during-some-prt-sessions-policy-or-fm-think-about-our-jobs?n=108830&urlhash=108830

I think you have identified an institutional issue. Combat
is inherently dangerous and chaotic. It is "risky". The Army,
however, is risk-averse. Leaders who mitigate risk to zero are rewarded. Unfortunately,
this results in policies like the one you are describing. In order to mitigate
the risk of injuries attributed to battle-focused physical training, leadership
has simply banned the practice. The irony is that by doing so, they have
dramatically increased tactical risks to warriors who are deployed to combat
environments having never had to sprint, jog, CASEVAC, and MANEUVER in combat gear.

1LT Private RallyPoint Member Wed, 23 Apr 2014 08:27:46 -0400 2014-04-23T08:27:46-04:00 Response by SSG Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 28 at 2014 12:55 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/ft-hood-the-battle-of-no-iba-run-policy-vs-fm7-22-which-requires-a-load-during-some-prt-sessions-policy-or-fm-think-about-our-jobs?n=113563&urlhash=113563

This is an interesting question because I know if I went to Ft. Campbell or Ft. Bragg, they wouldn't have a problem with this. Now granted it has been a year and half since I left Ft. Campbell, but I remember do IBA runs right when we started incorporating PRT into PT sessions. If in combat, aren't there 3-5 second rushes? It takes away from training because shouldn't you train as you fight? I think its time FM 7-22 needs to be re-evaluated. You can't take away training that relates to real life situations and running in kit is a real life situation when in combat SSG Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 28 Apr 2014 12:55:19 -0400 2014-04-28T12:55:19-04:00 Response by COL Private RallyPoint Member made May 2 at 2014 11:56 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/ft-hood-the-battle-of-no-iba-run-policy-vs-fm7-22-which-requires-a-load-during-some-prt-sessions-policy-or-fm-think-about-our-jobs?n=117104&urlhash=117104

Conditioning training under load is high risk to joint injury and not worth it in my opinion. Save loaded training for skill training when you are in the field or on the range or doing the occasional forced march, scaling up from fighting load to approach march load. But don't RUN with body armor as a conditioning workout.
