Rim Breaker. Double flats after hitting a major pothole on road between Kabul and BAF. It took three small hydrolic jacks to lift the up-armored SUV to get the broken tires and rims off. 90 minutes later we were off and running again. After that we purchased floor jacks for all our vehicles. The next time we got a flat it took 9 minutes to change.

I've had a few, but "Reboot" lasted the longest - since I did tech support for the small computers and servers...yep, you guessed it. When someone would call me for assistance that was the first thing I would ask - "Did you try turning it off and back on again?" :)

And every once in awhile I'll get someone real original that gets tickled pink by saying "Durka Durka" ala Team America World Police.

'Wrong Way'

Might have something to do with a vehicle nav in which I managed to turn the wrong direction at every turn I was supposed to make and still made my point. During the debrief, I am not sure how many times I heard "Here, you went the wrong way. Here, you also went the wrong way. Here...imagine that, you went the wrong way. VanAss(e), we're just gonna call you Wrong Way from here on out..."

While working in a Army Confinement Facility we were having forced cell movement training. I just so happen to hit one of the guards who was portraying the "inmate" just right in the jaw and broke it and he had to have it wired shut for a few months. After that I was "Jaw Breaker".

Had a few funniest was from my team chief in last unit RS because when I would get fed up while having help putting things away or loading up for the field I would get retard strength and start lifting things that are supposed to be two three and four man lifts by myself and I had the habit of pushing a 15k gen around by hand and moving pulling it to the Vic bay for repairs since it was close as well as moving a stt to one bay getting told to move it to another so I pushed it back out and around to the other bay while my NCO was looking saying this fucker

My nick name was Casey, from the CAISI system.

The very first piece of training I did when I got to my first unit, literally 3 days after I made it to my gaining unit, was training in this wireless internet system.

I'm a medic.

They put this system on my license, and everyone who looked at it, and new what it was, got the same look on their face and said the same thing. "I thought you were a medic."

Thankfully, everyone my level in my unit thought it was as dumb as I was that I went there, so they never said much.

Mine was Killer. Not in the sense you would think. Like the cartoon vulture named Killer.K the one that sang "Doe-Dee-Doe-Dee-Doe" while he was flflying it was given by the mech infantry guys in the unit, because I had a penchant for relocation of valuable military equipment. If nobody could order the part we needed, I would grab a case of AA batteries and come back am hour later with what we needed. I deployed with a connex full of batteries. It theatre you can get anything you need with batteries. Of course that was before everyone had smartphones and laptops. My portable DVD player was a hot commodity in certain circles as well.

First call sign I received was 'Sparky' after an unfortunate incident involving a 220v power line in our equipment lab.

The second (and most cherished since the Airman in my last unit gave it to me) was 'Stone Cold'. Most likely because much like the WWE guy, I had a tendency to verbally "stomp a mudhole" in anyone unfortunate enough to screw up enough to merit a trip to the First Sergeant and/or Commander's office.

Because I was the company armorer in the Third Infantry Regiment (one of the few regiments allowed to perform pass and review with bayonets fixed) and I always ended up at the aid station after breaking something, I was called Bayonet by some of the medics because I was always getting fixed.

Because I joined at 36 years of age and went to Fort Benning's School for Wayward Boys at 37 , I always got Old Man, Grandpa, Dusty, and Pop. Pop wasn't for my age. It was the sound my bones made when I got out of bed in the morning. I snored so loud when it on training I got called raptor.

Now I'm out, I just get called DaDa. That one is my favorite.

It is funny. My nickname throughout my time in the Navy, starting in BOOT CAMP fer crimminy sakes, was Hambone. I never told anybody when I would go to a new command but it would pop up pretty quick.

So there we were in the middle of a major inspection with Admirals etc on board (Navy nuke types know this is the "Operational Reactor Safeguards Exam" (ORSE). I was doing my thing as Electrical Division Leading Petty Officer during an electrical fire drill when suddenly the Chief who was Engineering Watch Supervisor yells out "HAMBONE WHERE ARE YOU!?"

The Admiral who was standing near me watching what I was doing said "I think he is calling you" I nearly choked. I had never seen this Admiral before btw. And of course in the drill critique we got nailed for that lack of professionalism.

I was in the infantry on active duty (a grunt) when I joined the national guard it took 2 years before they sent me to artillery school (gun bunnies) when I finally got through with school, the guys put me through a hazing where they were going to "pop my cherry". When it was over the sgt in charge said,"ok. Your no longer a grunt... You're a gruntbunny." He meant to say gun bunny but the nickname stuck the rest of my career.

I had a lot: Navy Man, The Assistant XO and Booter when I was aboard AMERICA. Cussin' JO and Shutterbug were a couple of the others in battalion and elsewhere. Captain Kevlar when I was PFC. Was the passenger in two vehicle accidents (different drivers)-a patrol car and a HMMWV. Then got caught without my ballistic helmet on patrol in Bosnia. Had to wear it everywhere for a month.

In Basic it was Candy Man because I got busted for having a kicker full of all types of candy and I would sell it, I was also referred to as A -Co Pusher as in I was the supplier of everyone's candy/sweets fix. Later on it became Freak because when something had to be done and no one could do it or figure out how to do it I always found a way to get it done. It was "freaky" how SGT Rocheleau always seemed to figure it out. Freak still sticks with me, Candy Man not so much. There are many others but not things to be discussed in public.

Mine was Staff. Out of AIT, I landed in a small G2 shop. I was a junior E4 and was the lowest man in the shop. This isn't saying much, as there was only one other non-NCO (another E4) in the unit. Whenever the MSG needed something done, he only had to yell, "Staff!" to get me running. I did everything except make the coffee...and that he only had me do once. :)

I was a NSW MCT communicator deployed with a SEAL Team and my call sign of Mischief was tame compared that of the Team. Just know that "Monkey" was only part of it. I had to call them over a circuit to relay some pretty critical information in CIC with the Battle Group Commander present and he almost choked on his coffee when he heard me go out across comms with both call signs.

In 2003, I was a platoon RTO. During a particular situation in Mosul, I was passed up to company RTO, cuz the CO needed another radio. Makes sense. But then, Bat. Commander needed a radio, so I was sent to him. Then to Brigade. Then To division, then all the way back down all in one day. My leadership called me Army6R for the rest of the deployment.

I ended up with Cody though my friends got it wrong, they were trying to call me Wild Bill Cody when it was actually Buffalo Bill Cody they were thinking of. I did a lot of crazy things when I was young including choking an associate pastor at church (literally). Thus I was considered "wild"

I've "earned" a couple. I was 40 when I went through ADA officer basic in '03, shortly after the movie "Old School" came out. All the other LTs in my class and the instructors called me "Blue". While deployed to Ft. Benning I was entering the DFAC with some of the enlisted guys, a couple of fresh new PVTs were leaving. One of them was so flustered at seeing an officer that he saluted me, forgetting that he was holding an ice cream cone. Smacked himself in the forehead with it. So the guys started calling me LT Dan and when they would see me they would yell out, in best Forrest Gump imitation, "LT Dan, ICE CREAM!!!!!"

When I got to Gemany in 88 I was assigned to a cannon section that had four black SPC who called themselves the four horsemen; they gave me "Trigger", after Roy Rogers horse, they thought the horse was white, I never corrected them.
Iraq 2003: Official radio call sign Otter 13. Got assigned a body recovery mission on the Tigris. Someone decided that becasue we were on the water all day our mission call signs had to start with "wet", being from Oregon, the Beaver State, I'll let your imagination run with that one.

Mine was Kimbel Slice. One of my sergeants in MOS school out in 29 Palms was big into UFC, and so started calling me Kimbel Slice, a cross between my actual last name and Kimbo Slice.

The name stuck with me even when I was stationed at Cherry Point and deployed to Afghanistan. It's what my CO referred to me as, and even some random MSgt I had never met used it during my first deployment.

My wife is Bulgarian, my best friend is Russian, and my security folder is about as thick as a dictionary thanks to all the foreign nationals I have regular contact with. Since I'm intel, that always makes for a nice break from work when I need an entire duty day to update my forms.

Had one in Japan, that one was "Japanese Stallion," because I drove the only A-spec Mustang on base, but that one only lasted while I was there.

My nickname in the Marine Corps was Huggies. I was stationed at HQMC in 1998 before it moved to Quantico, I had a Col who couldn't say my last name if his life depended on it. It kept breaking my name down, Hughes but he would see it as Hug hes = Huggies. It followed me all the way to Camp Pendleton until 2001 when I got out. People I served with still call me Huggies to this day.

I killed a bat in the barracks during reception batallion in basic. I got called Batman for a few weeks. When I got to an actual unit I got called Bunyon(as in Paul Bunyon), Baby Huey, and Lurch because I was a big kid. When I switched over to the Navy I picked up Mooseknuckle and Knuckledragger for a while. The nickname that ended up sticking was Havnav.

Had a few. "Tweeps" while riding a tin can as and ENL because I stood EW watches. "Marble One" while working in Antarctica because I'd do a lot of traverses out of town, but mostly to Marble Point. The one bestowed me that took awhile to get rid of was when I showed up at MWTC Bridgeport in the last rental car on the lot, a pink Cadillac . Took three years to lose "Pinks". The Marines adopted me, being a Seabee that was getting decent stuff built for them.

The day my promotion to W-3 came thru, I walked in to the Battalion S-1 office and wrote "Super Chief" on the manning board. The S-1, an Infantry Lt., looked up in awe and asked the XO "Is he really a Super Chief" ! Years later while working as a civilian at Ft. Campbell, when people asked "How are you" I often responded "Wonderful". Eventually I became known as "Mr. Wonderful".

As a gun section leader in 4/7, Cav 2ID, Korea I was fresh out of flight school with a Cobra transition. With 5 multi-combat tour W-4s in my section, I was tagged "Lieutenant Ballast"...when flying single pilot in a Cobra, dead weight was added into the front seat as ballast to keep the aircraft in within weight & balance limits.

On a CH47 crew in Honduras “Big Bad Wolf” yeah we blew a house down on approach. Local farmer had built a hut right at the tree line near a little village Los Possos over the weekend. Wasn’t there Friday and bam right there on Monday morning. Coming in with a sling load of fuel for the engineers who were building roads. It was an approach we flew 3-4 times a week so it was pretty standard. Never lived that one down.

Working as the XO of Army Reserve Communications (PAO shop for OCAR), I overheard one of the junior officers complaining about how the senior leadership was clueless about exploiting social media. The NCO that she was talking to asked if it was an age thing, and she replied, "No. LTC Harris is a dinosaur, and he gets it." Then she realized that she'd called me a dinosaur, and began apologizing, but I said that it was okay, and that we should shake on it, but when she put her hand out, I said, in my best geezer voice, "Sorry, but I can't reach you with these little T-Rex arms." I was T-Rex for a couple of days, but it didn't stick.

Mine was a Call Sign Nick Name. Meaning I never used it over the air. In my first assignment as a CSM, the First Sgts of the BN referred to me as "Spoon 7" behind my back. They didn't let on till my farewell dinner thinking I may take offense because of my career in Food Service. They meant it as a compliment and a term of respect. That is how I took it and still use it 20 years after I retired.
