Future of the force?

Where do you see the U.S. military 10 years from now? Do you see very tough challenges ahead of us? If so, what would you recommend to do so we start educating our formations and passing that institutional/strategic knowledge to them?

I just thought about this and how quickly things change in the military. Sometimes we get caught up on our day-to-day tasks and forget about this things. For example, we are close to have a generation that for the most part (18+ years) have served during the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan and other places while we keep hearing rumors of possible conflicts with countries like China, Russia, or NK. Again, we are used to this pace and things are cooking in the back that will come up after some of us retire or are close to retire. I'm trying to see what others think...

10 years from now? I see myself being retired for 7 years. But, the future is pushing less from the COIN fight to the Peer/Near Peer engagements. That’s what we are turning back to.

New weapons systems like laser and rail guns. Better smart bombs. More infrastructure for information. IA. Maybe spaced based weapons. AI. Drones. We will continue to focus on the full spectrum of operations, conventional and insurgencies. Some innovations will promote new tactics and or doctrine.

Hmm. China, Russia? If that happens, our idiot politicians will have failed at keeping the peace.
And if that indeed happens, I’d wager that the Reserves and National Guard, and Retired Regulars would be called up. And if it gets really bad, then the Retired Reserve “forces” would then be called up. The Retired Reserve being called up hasn’t happened, at least in my lifetime. I wonder if the Selective Service would be implemented?

I would look at the "2018 National Defense Strategy" which states the following:
"The central challenge to U.S. prosperity and security is the reemergence of long-term, strategic competition by what the National Security Strategy classifies as revisionist powers. It is increasingly clear that China and Russia want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model—gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions." Additionally, look at remarks made by GEN Milley which are always looking at a neer peer adversary. Look at the policies which GEN Mattis is pushing out with "Deploy or Get Out." The military will face a warfare in which we will no longer enjoy the comforts of CT. No more "Safe Areas" or large military bases. No longer will air superiority be something taken for granted. Additionally, the army will go away from garrison life to focusing back on warrior task and drills.

I am glad the Army is shifting towards an age and gender neutral PT test. I believe if you open all MOSs to all; then, everyone plays by the same rules. I also think this will develop a better and holistic picture of a Soldiers psychical capabilities.

SPACE the final frontier, These are the stories of the space force service members. Whos continuing mission is to stare at satellite computer screens as no one has done before. and on a sad note they will probably be as depressed and weird as air traffic controllers.
