Hi Garrett - thanks for joining us on RallyPoint. Given the wide range of issues coming up for SMs, Vets and our families given social distancing rules, what are the most pressing public policy changes you think need to be made to address the biggest pain points you are seeing?

Great question CPT David Gowel! Thank you so much for having me. I’ve been a Rally Point member since 2008!

One of the reasons we were founded was to lower barriers and increase access for veterans and their families to have a voice in policy. One of our banner issues is helping to solve the veteran suicide epidemic. While we are still working on that—the COVID-19 crisis has changed everyone’s life.

Student Veterans of America (SVA) led an incredible initiative to keep getting student veterans their Basic Housing Allowance as schools were transitioning to remote classes. They asked Mission Roll Call to sign a letter of support to send to Congress, which we did. We also conducted a flash poll, with 98% of respondents in support of the measure.

Currently, we are working on a poll which we will to determine which veterans and their families are in need of assistance (which we will refer to AWP’s the Network), as well which veterans are OK but want to serve or volunteer in some capacity—we can then connect them to a community-based organization that needs their leadership.

One of our ongoing campaigns is the MRC Be A Leader Video series. Veterans are uniquely positioned to lead in this time. We have led in uncertain and stressful times before. We started with some “high profile” veterans like Medal of Honor Recipients and senior leaders asking them to tell the rest of America what they are doing and how they are leading in this time. The results were so incredible that veterans started doing them on their own! You can too—just record a 30-60 video of yourself and use the hashtag: #MECBeALeader to share your wisdom and how you are leading with the rest of the Country.
