Garrett currently serves as the Executive Director of Mission Roll Call, a groundbreaking initiative that provides veterans a powerful, unified voice to our communities and leaders to inform public policy.

Garrett Cathcart is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where he served in the US Army Cavalry. Garrett currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Leadership and Military Science at Georgia Tech in the Army Reserves. His awards include three Bronze Star Medals, an Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device and a Meritorious Service Medal.

Garrett graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2004 and the Goizueta School of Business at Emory University in 2018. He is 2019 Scholar at the George W. Bush Veteran Leadership Program, and a Truman National Security Fellow since 2012.

Why would I need to join a group like this? I read your website and it does not answer the question for me. I have joined public advocacy groups in the past. The only one so far that ever steadily produced results was Amnesty International, letter writers network, freeing political prisoners behind the Iron Curtain (was a member during the Cold War). I belong to American Legion and am on board with most of their positions but every once in a while I disagree with them as well. So my past experience has been a mixed bag. Hard to find an advocacy group which produces results that are measureable.

What are the toughest policy hurdles Mission Roll Call has encountered for OIF/OEF veterans? Have lessons learned from previous conflicts (Agent Orange in Vietnam, etc) helped to push real policy change that addresses the long term consequences conflict has on the physical and mental health of this generations SM's?

As a BHC clinician X 5 decades, suicide prevention for vets and active duty is my top priority. I've been conducting my own research on combat trauma dating back to WW Two. I believe that early engagement of those having served in combat zones is critical, since only 6 of the 20 suicides per day are seen at a VAC. I've conducted a # of root-cause analyses on suicides of active patients, and conducted psychosocial autopsies on suicides to develop a prototypical pattern of high suicide risk.

I've been unable to access VA data based on their own RCA's and PS autopsies.
