When I enlisted I was set up with the Montgomery GI Bill
without any explanation or knowledge of my options. I have $62K to go to
school and approximately $18,000 remaining on my student loans before
the Service. My chain of command always told me it was too late once I
had learned about the alternative to the GI Bill, the student loan
repayment program, and that there was nothing I could do. Can you
clarify this issue for me please? My wife and I would rather pay off my
loan than return to school. That is if I can even get back into school
with loans. Still the preference remains I wish to transfer to this loan repayment program if at all possible.

My enlistment contract was missing pieces when I was sent off to BCT which hindered me from receiving my enlistment bonus so I am hoping they did not lose more that I am unaware of. Also, I called to my MEPS (Denver) who stated they have no other documents than what I held despite the fact I was supposed to receive an enlistment bonus and who knows what else I missed out on when they failed to effectively handle my contract.

Do you have a ed loan of 62K or you are eligible for 62K from GI Bill ?
How did you rake up the 18K debt ?
What field of ed are you pursuing ?

Thanks in advance for your response.

I attended college well before enlisting and came shy of my degree. I studied AOS in Master Certified Automotive Technologies with a minor in Business. The schooling was funded by a $33K student loan via FAFSA and Sallie Mae. I've paid all but maybe $18K back at this point. I was not told about the student loan repayment option when I enlisted or I would have opted for that measure since I enlisted with retirement in mind. I was told about Montgomery and Post 9/11 and the career counselor said the Montgomery was better for me and I would be receiving $62K for education that must be used within 10 years of exodus from the Military. I have tried having it corrected over the past three years and always told there was nothing that could be done (same story I received about my $2K enlistment bonus MEPS conveniently lost). Still stubborn and refusing to take no for an answer I continue to pursue accommodation past my ETS.

Observations:-
1. Refer to your , "..I have tried having it corrected "
What did you try correcting ?

2.The recruiter "said" that you will get MGIB and Post 9/11. Did you receive both ? If not, what did you not receive ?

3. Do you have any document stating $2K enlistment bonus ?
