CNN is sensationalizing this a little bit, but it's still pretty cool to see one of the big boys do it. This is in fact a relatively common maneuver when aircraft are landing in high crosswinds. Common, but still takes a good pilot because they have to land on the outer gear first, and if they get it wrong they risk a wing strike...or worse.

You're right they are sensationalizing it a bit. It's obviously harder in an A380 but landing in a "slip" or crab was one of the first things I learned when I originally got my pilots license.

LCDR (Join to see) Yep. In all honesty to me, the drama of the angle was more interesting -- it looked like someone was lowering it on a crane, rather than moving forward at approach speed. It's just rare to see one of the superjumbo's do it -- mostly because they generally don't have to, relative to smaller air frames. Which of course you know.
