I have served under 5 presidents and no matter the fervor in the political realm- the only time it really affected me was Reagan rebuilding what the previous administrations decimated and Obama pulling us from Iraq. I don't count Bush and Desert Storm and the conflicts that followed because we were going to be there regardless of who was in the driver's seat. That being said- I would encourage my kids if they were so inclined and I did. My son chose not to join and my step kids saw their father and myself deployed and gone a lot and have also chosen not to join. Service exists independently of political leadership.
