It was a combat medic (even though the incident was a training exercise) who saved my life. SP4 Joe Cress 2/325 ignored his own injuries to crawl around the DZ and tend the dozens (at least over a hundred - some say more than two hundred closer to three) of injured in what the last time I checked was the worst Airborne disaster in 82nd history. I had already been passed over by other medics doing triage who, finding no vital signs declared me dead (I remember hearing it but couldn't do anything - I was dead). When I regained consciousness (or life, depending) and was able to call for help Joe came crawling over and skidded down the ravine I was lying in, held my hand and raised cain until I was medevac'd. I have little doubt if he hadn't ignored his own injuries I would have bled out for good. I got hit, still don't know what it was but it hit the side of an M-113 and exploded on my left side at the face. Eye popped out, quite a dimple in the left side of my head and I really bleeding. One of the machine gunners tried to pop my eye back in, a few seconds later "Doc' Adams (Sp5 Adams) got to my position and put a battle dressing around my head and gave me the best advice of my life, don't lay down. A cease fire was called and a Huey landed between the M-113 and a burning M-48 with combat load and an M-113ACAV with over 20k of ammo in it and a couple of 50lb. boxes of TNT, the days before C-4 was used in the field. The pilot was butt ass crazy, if one of those vehicles went up his aluminum Huey would be crushed like an egg. As I was being tossed into the Huey, this was not Dustoff just a guy on a milk and mail run on his way his way back to Long Binh from An Loc he he heard the call for a Dustoff on the horn, he came in. Mitt form D Company and Al from A Troop were already on board, Doc instructed the to keep me upright, the did as we flew to the 93ed. Evan in Long Binh, when the litters came out the two guys with me said no we will walk in Skinner is bleeding to much to lay down and as I walked into Vietnam for the Pacific a walked out via the 93ed. Evac. Hospital…That was no Movie. Yes, but not in the way you think! My daughter is a combat medic. And, yes, she has changed the course of my life. By being blow up in Afghanistan. Without this, I would not have spent nearly 1 year of the past 3 1/2 years -off and on - at Walter Reed hospital in Bethesda as they put her back together again. And, lest you think I am annoyed by this... far from it! ... it has been a life altering experience, on so many levels. I have met many, many of the soldiers that she packed up down range and sent to the hospital. I have listened to them, their spouses, children, and parents, praising me for raising a wonderful daughter, who saved the lives of their loved one. It steals your breath, stops your heart, brings tears to your eyes. So, yes. I was proud of her before, but now I not only love her (my child!), but I respect her love of her soldiers, and their love of HER. Yes, she's earned the title "Doc". And, I am humbled and amazed at what she has gone thru, and continues to deal with. Every day, she gets up and keeps going like the energizer bunny. She doesn't quit. (I can't say I would have!) She complains little, and does not throw herself a pity party. (Can't say I would have bypassed that opportunity either.) I believe she's STRONGER NOW than she ever has been, even though her body is broken and will never be the same.
