Has anyone ever gone in to a gun store and shot it up? Do you think there is a reason this hasn't happened? What do you think?

The answer is obvious if you are willing to look through any agendas.

No. Same reason Cop Bars don't get robbed, and Police stations (inside) are generally safe.
Predators have a very simple rule "The easy prey is the only prey."
Wolves go after slow deer, not fast deer. They expend the MINIMUM energy needed to accomplish their goal.
Therefore "Gun free Zones" are counter to the philosophy of a safe society. Disarming society makes it less safe, not more safe. It's counter-intuitive when dealing with the mentally unstable, criminal, and terrorist elements, which is what causes these unsafe conditions.
Law Abiding Citizens have a very low chance of creating safety concerns. Yes, they do happen, but it is through NEGLIGENCE, which is on par with any other "industrial accident." Think of it like falling off a ladder. Proper training corrects the issue, but mandating that won't fix the issue, because quite honestly, we still have people break their neck from standing on rolling chairs.
The other three categories, which I repeat are Criminal, Terrorist, and Mental Health, must be viewed differently.
Criminal Elements is a Socio-Economic issue. It's been on the decline for 3 decades straight. I can spend hours on this subject, and I can point out EXACTLY where this takes place, but simply put, it's population density (about 5k/sqmile).
Terrorism is based on ideology. Belief system. We're not going to fix that through anything but generational cultural shift and education.
Finally is Mental Health. Not to be blunt, but you cannot account for Crazy. Sane people don't do things like this. And going from Sane to Crazy can happen very quickly, because the human mind is fragile (chemically balanced machine). As this is a medical issue, and it is Rights based, we're not going to fix this with legislation.

So his wife was safe. Bad things happen everywhere, but mass shootings don't happen nearly as often anyplace where the criminal is just as likely to end up dead.

Well... yeah... Mass shootings tend to be planned. Planning would likely include places with higher/lower chances of success...
