What can I expect from an assignment to Fort Benning as a duty station?

Has anyone had any experience with fort Benning as a duty station? I pcs there in September and wanna see what I can expect?

Columbus is pretty boring, depending on what you like to do in your spare time. The post itself isn’t so bad, depending on where you end up.

So the Army is sending you there for your job and it is your responsibility to make it a good experience. That said, your attitude will drive your expectations more than anything. When I was in Germany I saw young enlisted people unhappy and all they did was stay in the barracks. Only assignment over 24 years I could not make enjoyable was Afghanistan. Every assignment will have things that do not interest you and many will have things that you do. Outdoors, hunting, and fishing is great in that area. History is a dream with all the Civil War battles and DC. Wanna sail, there is the coast. Skydiving in Florida is premier.

It is hot but it snows, as well....I think fewer Soldiers. For it is a training base...mostly you will see 3ID Soldiers....most the trainers probably already had ten in before coming there.

I just left Benning. It is not a bad place. First, be very cautious on where you live. Anywhere from exit 1 to exit 8 on the I-185 is pretty sketchy. I have several soldiers that have had their vehicles and homes broken into. I stayed out in Phenix City but anything past exit 10 or in Midland. Besides that Benning is pretty much all training units now. 3ID shut down their last unit there. So when you are in a training unit it is really just a wash and repeat. It makes for a stable environment. The biggest issue that I had for my soldiers was that they were not able to get in a lot of training. You can lose you skill.

The area around the Riverwalk is really nice. I would go down there often. There is a good bit of stuff to do there. Atlanta isn't too far but it is a bit of a trip.

How far back do you want to go? I was on Kelley Hill in the 1-58 INF. in 85-87 and 533rd Trans. On Main Post in 89-90. Stay away from Victory Drive. They call it VD DRIVE for a reason. Phenix City was cool, and the farther away from the post you traveled, the better amenities they had. Now a days, I have no idea what is there. Good luck, and just make it your journey!! You'll have to be the judge on how it goes!!
