Friends elderly mother has a bone infection on her heel, and the solutions provided aren't real great. Just looking to see if anyone here may have heard of/tried something else that may have worked. Thanks!

I had a bone infected with MRSA. I had to have that part of toe bone amputated.

PO1 H Gene Lawrence Thanks for the info. Sorry you had to go through that. We are worried that my friend's mother is 94 and they aren't sure she will make it through an amputation surgery of her foot.

LT Brad McInnis - I’m sorry to hear that. I will keep her in my prayers, my friend.

Sgt Kelli Mays - yes, it wasn’t all that bad. I was surprised that it was Mursa though.

LT Brad McInnis Infections have different causes. Depending on the type of infection and or the cause will depend on the treatment.

The only definitive cure for osteomyelitis is amputation.

That is not to say that we do not treat the infection with antibiotics and salvage the limb for as long as we can. I have had patients with osteomyelitis of toes and even calcaneus that we treated with IV vanco intermittently for as long as 2 years before we ended up amputating. It is very patient specific.
