I wanted to get prior experiences from anyone that has, and hints/tips on what they would have done different. Has anyone PCS'd using a rental RV, and if so, what were the pros/cons of the experience? Was is difficult to receive reimbursement? 2016-04-30T19:30:05-04:00 TSgt Private RallyPoint Member 1491840

My wife and I are playing with the idea of renting an RV to PCS in 2018 from JBER. I assume you can weigh it empty and full to collect the weight allowance funds. But it is best to talk to the Transportation Office.

MOBILE HOME TRANSPORTATION. When moved by commercial transporter, reimbursement includes carrier charges, road fares & tolls, permits & charges for pilot car. If towed by POC, reimbursement is for actual costs. For self-propelled mobile home, reimbursement is at 36.5 cents per mile. May be transported by GBL. Reimbursement is limited to what it would have cost the Government to transport member's maximum HHG weight allowance.

Transportation of Mobile Home is in lieu of HHG transportation and is authorized only within CONUS, within Alaska, & between CONUS & Alaska. Never mind! LOL :D

The pros of doing a DITY move is that you can move more than your authorized weight. I did a few myself and being a gear head I had "TONS" of excess weight with welders, air compressors, tools, etc. I would have owed literally hundreds if not thousands of excess pounds and dollars worth. The other up side is that YOU have access to your gear and goods so you can get bedding and such when you get to your new quarters.
Just my 2 cents. We owned the RV. We had to weigh it empty (keep receipts) weigh it the day of travel with all kids and dogs on board and off we went. All travel rules apply, you will be reimbursed for the weight, the mileage (at a lower rate than needed), the cost of camping spots etc. All of this is covered in the JTR and our claim went through as smooth as any other PCS we had experienced. Just know the rules retain the receipts and enjoy. My Family and I made this move in 2011 so some things may have changed.

Also, there are a lot of Pro's adn Con's with RV's you need to do some thurough research before making your final decision. It was a logistical nightmare flying up with just the Pitbull, now add in the small child and Mastiff. Rather than get crammed into a Ford Flex and drive through Canada, we figured an RV would accommodate more space for everyone for the length of travel and allow more sanity as well.
