Although not Orthodox, I am a Jew. I think the worst problem for me was eating Kosher during the High Holy Days. At one point, I did have to work Weekend Check, and I was always let go for the 1-2 hours to attend Sabbath Services. One thing about being in the military, you really cannot be denied going to services of your faith, allowances must be made. On the boat, Sabbath services went every Friday night, right as Night Check was to start. Allowances were made and after services, I went to work. Not a problem. I have NEVER, however, allowed my faith to get in the way of my career, or made others bend over backwards to accommodate how I practice my faith.
Very good question. I would say the best course of action is to talk to a local chaplain. See what the Soldier or yourself can do to better the situation. This would be far better then the IG route. Always find solutions before creating problems. Good discussion, look forward to other ideas.
Have served with almost all the religions. He will have to struggle to cope after leaving a school environment. He should have thought about this before he swore in. But keep in mind that IDF found ways to make it work for 70 years. He really need to find a rabbi and have a long talk with him about what he can do when religion conflicts with duty.
