Has anyone used their post 911 to get a real estate license? If so, what school did you go through?

I’m about 6 months from my ETS and am looking to get my real estate license. I’m currently in school part time to become a medical assistant but would like something to fall back on. I would prefer something online I could do at my own pace but I’m not entirely sure where to start as there seems to be many schools but most seem somewhat like a gimmick. Any help would be appreciated!

Have you considered looking up real estate agents with military background on LinkedIn? They may be able to guide you on where to go for training and how to pay

Find a list of schools in your area or online and start checking their websites or calling them to see if they are GI bill illegible. If not I believe you can apply to compensation after you pass your test. But don't quote me on that. Good luck.

I had looked into it for myself years ago, and basically the local community college offered the courses to prepare you for the license exam. That said, since it was a local community college it would have been good for the GI Bill as it would have been a college course like any other course.

I don't recommend using the GI Bill for such. The real estate exam and license is a pretty straightforward credential with little cost relative to what the GI Bill could help you with.

That would be a waste of the GI Bill for you. The moment you tap even one month worth of GI Bill you're no longer eligible for they Yellow Ribbon Scholarship which is worth tens of thousands of dollars in paid tuition. You might not plan on using it now, but with the forever GI Bill you could use it in 20 years when you're ready for a career change

Not worth using your GI Bill for! Use the GI bill for a business degree to benefit your brokers license in the future if that is the route you are wanting to take. Real estate classes are like 1500 to 2000 dollars you would be wasting your benefits doing that. Save now and enroll now to see if there is active discounts.

SPC Private RallyPoint Member As others have mentioned use your GI will to obtain a degree, which is what I did. After I retired, I went to a two year college that offered a real estate occupational certificate after completing all the required course work. I received my certificate but did not take the test to get my real estate license. Look at colleges that offer these classes. Good luck.

I applaud your vision and desire to plan your future, but agree with many who have recommended reserving your GI bill for your medical assistant goal. You may even want to upgrade that goal to a nursing degree or a more specialized area like x-ray tech.
When I got my real estate licence in Pennsylvania 15 years ago, the total cost was less than $1000 including several weekends of intensive courses, the state exam, and the dues for the Real Estate Association that gives you the right to use the Realtor term. I'm sure the cost has risen some, but not significantly.
I recommend you contact contact a nationally affiliated real estate agency in the area you intend to settle for their recommendation of local schools that would prepare you for the state exams. Many are affiliated with local companies that would prepare you more cheaply and in less time than some of the more publicized companies.

Hi Meagan,

The first thing to do is look up the requirements for the State you want your license in. If you are living close to a border of another State check that one too.

There are a few ways to go about getting the classes you need.
1) The fastest way is usually a online program by Allied Business School or something similar but choose one that is credentialed for your State. (You can complete a class or two every 2 weeks ish)

2.) This can take a lot longer but through a community college or university that offers a real estate degree program(ideal for your gi bill). (This can take a few semesters).

You also want to reach out to the local realtor board for your area to learn how much it costs to join and get mls access. This is generally the more expensive part.

Have you looked into skillbridge? Being 6 months out, you may have to request a 3 month one, but it could work. :)

Dont have to dip into post 911 for licensing...if you can save up $300-$500 you can get it ..by taking an exam and shadowing a real estate agent. Pls check VanED.com for TX n OK license.

Use Mosley or one of the online courses and take state specific for where you will be. They have in person if and when needed. This is not brokerage specific. Then when licensed check many offices. If looking for military connection...I may be able to help. My office has a large % military but also Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals.

I am in Las Vegas and own a real estate office. We utilize SkilBridge to identify local service members who are looking at what they want to do after retirement or ETS. The program is perfect, because it allows our service members to attend school and get licensed as well as OJT with a real estate team to build confidence and skills needed for when they are ready to take on full time.
