Has anyone who lives in Tennessee not paid taxes on a new /used vehicle?

I was told today by the registrars office while registering my car that I should not have paid sales tax on my car when purchasing it. Has anyone else been charged sales tax and went through a process to get their money back?

When I bought my car the sales tax was included in the price, and it wasn't a hefty fee either, not like compared to once when I bought a truck in Missouri and they wanted $4,300 in sales tax before I could register! I've bought and sold vehicles of every type in TN from trucks to trailers and even a boat, I paid sales tax on everything an not once did the county clerk say I shouldn't have. I'd be interested to hear more details, is TN your state of residence, if not where is? Was it new or used?

As far as I know you have to pay sales taxes on the purchase of a new car but not on your license plate or license plate renewal. Also TN does not have a state tax so you should not pay state taxes or have any money withdrawn from your paycheck for state.

If I remember correctly a car bought by a service member in the state of Tennessee is exempt from sales tax. Check with ACS to verify but I can almost guarantee that as a military member you are exempt from tax.

I didn’t pay taxes on my wife’s RAV4. We bought it in Nashville. Just remind the dealer in case they “forget”.

CW4 Omara is 100% right .You do not pay taxes while on active duty, once you get out or retired there you start paying that sales tax.
