Has Colonel rank insignia ever looked like Corporal rank insignia?

I've recently watched two movies (Hardcore Henry and The Pale Blue Eye, neither of which I would recommend) both of which featured a character identified as a Colonel but who had what appeared to be Corporal stripes on his sleeves.

Is this just Hollywood being ignorant, or has the rank insignia changed that much over time, or were the chevrons something else entirely?

Hollywood being ignorant.

For a period of time in the 1800s the US Army used chevrons for company grade officers and they were used for Generals in early English times (i.e., pre-UK times), but aside from that, there's no evidence of any major military power using chevrons for field grade officers.
