I think it takes different things to add up to "the most feared and premier combat force in the world". Advanced weaponry? Check. Elite training? Check. But the X-factor is the intestinal fortitude of the individual soldier that keeps attacking when all seems lost (think D-Day). And to that point, I don't know if an entire division has been tested like that in a long long time. We certainly see glimpses of it in combat on smaller levels. But as far as attributing it to an entire division, well, we'll have to wait and see.

If we are talking internal beefs between others units in the Army, then they might say so. However, the perception to those who might end up on the receiving end of the 82nd, I doubt they think any less. Its difficult to understand the true psychological effect of an enemies Airborne Division, since there are none that pose a threat to us at home.

As a former member of H MINUS, I wish the politicians would leave war to our warriors, but the country, as a whole, has gone soft and when the politicians hear the complaints from their constitutes, they bow down afraid of losing their next election. Public opinion has affected how our soldiers are allowed to fight since the Vietnam Conflict. That just is not going to stop.

Absolutely not. When we have operated in their vicinity they have always been "hard chargers". Their ability in combat is based upon the quality of their NCOs and they are exceptional troopers and professional with a clear understanding of what it takes. Most of their officers from 1/LT to LTC are also very smart and aggressive. If anything were to hurt them it would be the Army's "risk averse" leadership which does seep down to the lower ranks. This is an institutional attitude that can make some officers with ambitions for higher rank more concerned about not making mistakes than about successfully completing a combat mission. Everyone from POTUS down (excluding Sec. Mattis, he already knows this) need to remember several things about the nature of warfare:
1) War is a terrible thing and truly a scourge upon mankind. Irrespective, things happen from time to time that require us to pick up the sword and fight those who mean us harm. Most often they are irrational evil leaders of other nations or extra-national players. No matter how much you speak with them or threaten them if we aren't able to promote true regime change, we will have to defeat them militarily.
2) Individual soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen are the tools we have to accomplish victory. Unfortunately if we fight an opponent with the intensity displayed by the "Greatest Generation" in WWII there will be a lot of casualties and letters to write home. Since the end of the draft we have all been volunteers and need to realize that we are all expendable resources in the quest for victory.
3) Even great generals, officers, and NCOs make mistakes in combat. We have limited information about the enemy's intentions, numbers, and determination to achieve their objective. No matter how much we plan we will occasionally be defeated in a true war. When an officer has done a good job in planning an OP but everything goes sideways anyway, it should not be a career killer. Timidity will kill more of your own men than aggressiveness ever will.

I have run rather far afield of the question but this will tie it all together. The 82nd ABN can only be as good as their commanders are willing for it to be. If they stop worrying about their careers and develop the will required for aggressive offensive actions, the 82nd will clean anyone's clock unfortunate enough to meet them in combat.

The 82nd Airborne had a proud History and still lives up to it and takes pride as they should, other units such as the 101st, 173rd just to name a few that have that pride and motivation which they earned and continue to uphold. Give them a mission to accomplish and the assets to do it they will always get the job done and make all of us proud of them. The large team of all of us be they Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard all step up to the plate and get it done. We need to take a lesson from President Thomas Jefferson who knew the Military Forces of the United State needed to be enlarged and maintained to not only be able to respond on a global basis but to also prevent wars and other transgression against our country in the first place by maintaining that strength. In our History that has been forgotten a number of times and the results have never been good. I may add also very often overlooked are the Merchant Marines whom have made major contributions and many have no idea how much they have done and continued to do.

No! The 82nd stands above and beyond many of the elite forces because they are always on call (the Ready Brigade) and possesses the mindset of utter professionalism. From 1976 to 1979 I served as the first Special Security Officer of the 82nd under the command of MG Roscoe Robinson, and I consider that assignment as the peak of my career. Although duties were long, hard, and exacting, my memories of the 82nd Airborne tops the priority list of my career. The 82nd's patch is one of historical glory and respect in my book. Airborne--all the way!

They have not had that since WWII
And Yes I was in the 82nd after WWII and no, it was not feared and premier combat force in the world? then..nor now.
It was and is a good unit that has enormous esprit De Corp but their training and what they have done on the ground is only legendary and "feared" in the minds of those riding a legendary reputation stemming from WWII.
There are great units in the 82nd, there are awesome soldiers in the 82nd.... but 12 hours on DeGlopper field followed by 4 hours on green ramp with a BN Mass Tac jump on a DZ with no actual enema forces shooting at Aircraft, jumpers in the sky, or on the ground does not make them "premier " for todays battles, nor does it make the enemy fear them.. Partly because the enemy fears no one, God is on their side (if you ask um) and they can not loose, even if the IED does not kill and they are shot dead,,,they think they win...Partly because other then Airborne operations, they do nothing special as far as training... and they do little in the way of individual training, little in company training jumping (no pun intended) to BN and BDE level missions... That is not for want by the company and below leadership though...if left to them, they would spend countless hours perfecting individual,team, sqd and company level skills....
No enemy has feared the 82nd since the Germans in WWII

No, it's a awesome unit with great history and lineage. Looking from the perspective of someone retired, the Military as a whole is lost as a fighting force. General Officers are being relieved of Command, training schedules are loaded with classroom briefings and discipline is out of control. News outlets and social media have no filters so every thing is reported. It's created a feeling of mistrust and mismanagement from the population. Take in account the older generation of soldiers feel they handed the reigns over to a current generation of recruits that invest more in social reform than selfless service.

The American military is a much more professional and capable force today than it has ever been, and that includes the legendary units who still carry the aggressive attitudes of their forebears. As a 1st Infantry Division Retired Soldier I think a Heavy Division would also be needed to give the 82nd, 101st, 1st Marine Division that extra firepower. But I agree with the rest remove the leash and let Soldiers Soldier and Generals general and change the ROE a lot and we won’t have a terrorist problem. Screw all the diplomatic stuff until the last terrorists is dead and the last bullet is fired.

All the 82d talks about is jumping....jump,jump,jump. That’s it. But they didn’t jump into Afghanistan (Rangers did), they didn’t jump into Iraq (173rd). They weren’t even the first conventional boots on the ground in Afghanistan, that’s was Rakkasans and 87th (Climb to Glory) from 10th Mountain. I used to be stationed at NTC and a bde from 82d came out once and they got chopped up. They might be good at jumping but everyone is a leg once they hit the ground. I wasn’t impressed and haven’t seen or heard anything since the GWOT started to change my mind.

One of the big problems is all the non airborne support units which ought to be under different command are now under the 82nd patch. The airborne tab means nothing anymore, you have to look out for the parachute badge. Even then there are those who wear the badge within division who have never jumped in division. I guess people felt like they were getting treated differently since they didnt have the maroon beret, and the new army caved and gave it to them.

The fact of the matter is that if you do cool stuff then you SHOULD be treated differently due to the inherent hazards of the duty. I'm a proponent of removing the airborne tab and beret from attached non airborne units and even non airborne personnel. When that happens, the beret will get it's ferocious reputation back.

Yes. A former 82nd para I knew while in DIV, went on to SF and then to 10th MTN, said that the 10th MTN spent more time in the field (mid 90's) per squad, platoon, company and battalion than the 82nd did. BS I say, speak not this heresy. He then explained that they didn't jump, so then they didn't have all the ancillary details involved. Fair enough I said.
Now the question was; has the 82nd lost its combat prowess and esprit de corps. Yes. 75th Ranger Regiment is now the premeire light infantry, plus running their own missions like a baby CAG. No longer are they the guards of DEVGRU or CAG.

Remember when the press and marines rolled into Falluja to take that city? It was 5he 82nd that took the roads and bridges first to make sure the press got in safe with the marines. Now don't get your finster in a knott gunny, marines fought like hell too.

82nd Airplane Gang? Let me tell you a story. Days after the fall of Baghdad. My battalion commander had control of his troops. We had hajis lined up at the ‘gate’ to sell us pallets of haji cokes and anything else we might want. We bought chicken with USDA inspection (from Claxton, GA, right outside FSGA) for a change of command BBQ. At exactly the same time, before the very first IED, the 82nd (next unit over) had dive-by shootings on their gate. Why the difference a mile or three away? They went downtown in small groups, ‘tuning up’ the locals for “failing to speak English” when they got bored. Untie their hands when we’re stuck in with Russia or China. Not before.

I was a member of th 82Abn. 1/508 inf “C” Co. , “Recon” Squad Ltr. I was a “leg”, and I have never been more proud. I think they are still an elite outfit, and if they have lost a step, it was forced on them!

It's not just about the 82nd. It's about the U.S. Military in general. The President needs to insist on a declaration of war from Congress. Tell the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to make the enemy incapable of waging war. Bring everything we have, short of nuclear weapons, to bear and end the terrorist threat. Once and for all. This will renew the status of the U.S. Military as the strongest on the planet.

Those big Army units I’m sure are a handful, theyre big, well trained, and well supported. Being a Jarhead we poke fun, but those units are certinly no joke to deal with.
