If the behavior would go away, programs like affirmative action wouldn't be necessary. I don't have a problem with the push for diversity. However, I do take issue with the level of diversity sought, depending on the situation. I think that the level of diversity should be based on your surrounding population, much more so than the overall population. Diversity in Salt Lake City looks quite different than diversity in New York City. Organizations in Utah should look similar to their surrounding community (from which they draw employees), but that's not the same as trying to create an environment in SLC that looks just like NYC. Cable gets on his soapbox.
There is absolutely no inherent advantage of diversity for diversities sake. When you look at countries around the world that have highly diverse populations/cultures/races, very few are peaceful. The assumption of diversity is that all cultures are equal, and the is decidedly an untrue statement. What has happened is that the Classical Liberal values of fairness and tolerance have somehow degenerated into an Ideal that different is better, and again that statement is not true. The odd thing about it is that Progressives in the US have traditionally held up the Western European countries as the height of enlightenment, yet most have homogenous populations and cultures and generally same religions. We see that disintegrating with the massive influx of Muslim men, Islam being a religion/culture/government that directly conflicts with Classical Western Values. The fact that modern education blows when it comes to teaching Western Culture and it glorifies those belief system outside of that culture. Diversity is much more than that. It is mixing races, people from the North/East/South/West, Short and tall, fat and thin, cultures, religions and various other beliefs, male and female, young and old and so on and so on. All of the demographics are what makes people who they are. When I married, I was from South Mississippi my wife was from North Mississippi. Although we are both Caucasian, our backgrounds and the way we were raised could not be more different. We merged our lives and backgrounds and our marriage works because we both brought something different to the marriage from the way foods are prepared to rearing of children and numerous other things. Small example but I hope it gets the point across. When we stop focusing on including just races and fully understand diversity and what each individual brings to the fight and how it can really and truly make us better, because no one has a monopoly on life, then will it work. I have worked with many cultures, in the old days, they wanted to be Americans and strived to be Americans born in other countries. They only asked for the chance to succeed, pray to their own religion and be American. Moslems would pray quietly out side on their breaks or maybe in the cubes and you respected their time. Now it seems the diversity groups DEMAND things, special payer rooms which quite often were not available to other religions, special diets instead of eating Vegan, special holidays, and always with the threat of lawsuits. They apparently refuse any and all attempts to assimilate into the American culture. Even to the point of trying to bring their old nation's laws into America.
