1SG, Facebook posts led to a lot of extra duty for underage drinking at Fort Bliss in 2009-2010. My most recent experience before retiring in 2019 was an NCO that was a UPL deciding it would be an outstanding idea to Snapchat himself doing cocaine with exotic dancers.

I’d say conservatively that neatly a quarter of the chapters I handled began as social media posts that drew supervisory attention.

It has, but it hasn't. Has it led to more incidents? Certainly not. Young and dumb soldiers do young a dumb soldier things. But has it led to more people being caught, this resulting in more action taken? Absolutely. And this is both a blessing and a curse. We live and we learn through making stupid choices and living with stupid consequences. However, UCMJ doesnt work the same way it used to either. It's too quick to start a paper trail and end a soldiers career. Theres no midnight-hour smoke sessions going on anymore. No more Team Leaders taking Joe to the woodline to make him sweat out the liquor from last night. No more 1SG positively obliterating a soldier down to his very soul with a freshly sharpened knife-hand anymore.

See, as far as I can see, it isnt a social media change. Its a culture change. And proof positive that progression isnt always a good thing.

I would like to see data to back this up. There has always been plenty of UCMJ. But when I did dumb things as a Jr enlisted Soldier there wasn't video evidence of it.

Within weeks of TicToc coming out one of my neighbors (AIT Instructor) decided to make and post a TicToc video in the classroom. Let’s just say his Command had no hesitation on imposing non judicial punishment.

Social media has increased the amount of trouble people have gotten to in general. Before, there was just no record of it when we did stupid things. I did so many stupid things when I was in the military, but the only people who knew anything about it were the ones that were there. We didn't go around bragging about it. Now, they shoot a video or picture of it and post it on social media just so they can get a few likes because they think those few likes will make them seem important. The problem with social media is that there's always a record of it, even if you "delete" it. In one way or another, it always comes back to bite you.

Social Media has certainly given stupid people a greater chance of facing UCMJ charges. In a day when fewer people are even eligible to enter the armed forces, and middle-and high-schoolers are warned repeatedly about not posting things on the internet they may regret later, one would think they would be more careful about what they record and post that could impact their career. But, on the bright side, this may be one more, if not late, screening process to increase the intelligence level in the military, as it weeds out those who are stupid enough to push "send," and opens up the promotions to the others!
