Bad leadership should not be a factor in someone leaving the military. Do you think the civilian world does not have as many bad leaders? I met many toxic leaders in the second half of my career, but at that point, I was stuck. Additionally, those toxic leaders had a greater impact on my career, because one bad NCOER doesn&#39;t hurt a SGT, and it can be overcome by a SSG. One bad NCOER pretty much torpedoes a SFC&#39;s chances of ever becoming a MSG. Additionally, being continuously assigned outside your MOS just so a leader can look good (I.e. I had excellent administrative skills, but was not in an admin MOS... Guess who was always in the O Room or 3 shop?) kills competitive chances at promotion.<br />So while I *did* stay until retirement, I also got out almost as soon as I could once I was eligoble for retirement. I think that the lack of direction or lack of encouragement by ROAD leaders may be a larger contributor of ETS than the louder model. Just not as obvious as it takes place. He threatened to destroy my career and my marriage. I took the threat to the company commander. What did I do? I soldiered my ass off and waited him out. He had a list of all the enlisted he want to kicked out of the army and I was on top. This was in Germany, I departed with an EIB, a Pathfinder Professionalism Badge, Two ARCOM, and as a SSG(P). I was determined to go to Fort Bragg and Airborne which no one could stop me; Not even that asshole 1SG. I had GREAT leadership at my last unit in Korea until the tail end. At that point, everything went downhill and I had ZERO desire to stay in any longer. Although discouraging at times, I have learned to push through it and try to provide better leadership to those in my sphere of influence. I have seen leaders who have tried to turn blame for their own mistakes on easier targets (junior soldiers) and I have seen leaders who are parade throwers - act great and caring in front of their superiors but behind closed doors, are the complete opposite. It is very unfortunate, and it is even more sad for me to see fellow NCOs act that way.
