Oh yes I was in AIT and had smart mouthed my Plt Sgt. And for punishment I had to sweep up rain ad it was raining. He had me do this for about 5 hours, he was standing out in the rain with me. I had to do this because I was the squad leader of my class and he was trying to teach me about being held accountable and being a leader. I respected this man before this and more so after it because he could have just gone inside and came back to check on me but he was one of those ill never tell a soldier to something I can't or won't do Sgt's. He and I had a very good relationship while I was in AIT.

I stepped on a drill SGT’s hat leaning against the wall in a press. I watched the sun come up over Ft McClellan Ala, I met the grave digger. All night PT.

I left my top left breast pocket unbuttoned after taking out my pad and pencil to write down instructions from one Drill Sergeant to the other. When I got to the other, nicknamed, "The Smoke Master," I delivered my message, word for word from the note I had just taken from Drill Sergeant Lee (you NEVER forget these perfect human beings), but The Smoke Master was staring at my unbuttoned pocket. Our eyes met, and then he said the one word command we all knew all too well, "DROP!" And then "PUSH!" It was so hot in El Paso (Fort Bliss[ter], TX), that we were allowed to place our work gloves on the asphalt to protect our hands before doing push-ups. I did that and then started to push up Ft. Bliss. After ten I requested to recover. Denied. After 20 I requested to recover. Denied. You get the picture. Being smoked by the smoke master always meant until muscle failure. Always. Every time. No use faking it, either. He would let you bake. It wasn't until blood, sweat and tears, and slingin' snot, were you allowed to recover. Burned into memory: one needed to be perfect around The Smoke Master. That was my one and only individual smoking. Lesson learned.

During basic training in 1962, I had a "Dirty Rifle" and I argued with Drill Sergeant. I was awarded Instant KP fueling coal-fired cooking stoves all day.
