Have you ever thought about "How to be a leader people want to follow"?

Everyone wants to be the boss, the guy in charge. It's a great aspiration to have. There are autocratic leaders, democratic leaders, laissez faire, bureaucratic leaders, servant leaders.... What about being more than the boss? Having authority because of position doesn't mean you're truly leading. What about being the kind of leader people want to follow?

Having authority because of position only works for a little while. If your people don't want to follow you you will ultimately fail or at least have huge turnover. Even in the military people are more likely to put their lives on the line for a leader that they respect, trust and like. If all of your people hate you you have a problem.

I live by this rule below.- It's my rule and I try to hold myself to it. I admit, I sometimes catch myself Managing situations instead of Leading them.

Managers have subordinates, Leaders have followers. If you look around and have no followers, you are Managing.

I like the article, I would add one more: leadership must set expectations, even when self-organized these leaders must have identified goals.
As part of being a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) this is a great overview of Spotfy's culture and is used to explain Agile/Scrum. I enjoy using this model and strive for my team to reflect these values.
It is a little long and software engineering focused but I think lessons learned can be applied to any organization.
