When congress signed the National Defense Authorization Act in 2018, 100-percent service connected disabled Veterans became eligible for Space Available Travel. Better known as ‘Space-A’ or military hops, Air Mobility Command (AMC) maintains an extensive network of flights throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.

I didn't know if anyone at VA would see this, however, I'd been given to understand that the spouse isn't covered, even though they also get one of the MAR RAPIDS ID cards...would anyone sending this know if that's the case at all, perhaos? Also, on another thread about this, someone mentioned the notion that the flights might also only be one way, which, if course, would be useful to know, I figured to ask the whole site all.that generally, however, I also thought to ask those questions here as well, many thanks, I am total perm disabled, that was why I'd wondered, my wife and I had wondered about using the provision, is heard something about it, we just didn't know about those specific aspects, as I'd said, many thanks....

It's been years since my family and I flew Space A. But for a grand total of $ 40 my family of 4 flew from Mildenhall to Dover and returned via Seymour Johnson to Rhein-Mein to Mildenhall. But as has been said, make sure you have backup plans. 30 minutes out of Dover the mission changed, all those heading to the 2 other bases that flight was to cover had to disembark and make alternate arrangements since dependents were not authorized to fly conus to conus.

Yes, but I’m my experiences, it’s very unreliable. Furthermore, AZ ANG is Not eager to have pax on their flights. I’ll spare the details for now, but can attest to this Fact with firsthand knowledge and details. So I was Shocked to learn than Sen John McCain sponsored the bill to allow space-A for disabled veterans. I’m 21 yr active duty retired and gave up rather than continue battling for a ride (on empty aircraft) with AZ ANG at Sky Harbor!!

I did, 45 years ago when I was on active duty. I was off on a leave and was willing to fly anywhere they would take me. I ended up in Athens, Greece on a great adventure. I'd recommend it to any young soldier but would avoid it now because I simply don't have the stamina left to tolerate possible long delays.

Yes. If you make contingency plans (able to get back flying commercial, able to get a place to sleep if bumped, etc.) the service is great. Bear in mind that the majority of planes are cargo planes with netting and troop seats, not airline planes with comfortable seats and in-flight movies. They are generally cold and have no windows. As a vet, you will be category VI (lowest) and will be able to fly only after everybody else is called. For CPT Nicoll, the USAF and ANG have no choice but to allow you to fly and their personal feelings have no bearing. Everyone has a commanding officer and an OIC, and if the personnel at the passenger terminal are going against regulations, talk to that person before you give up.

One caveat: Unless you are retired, I'm pretty sure your spouse cannot travel with you.

I am retired Army. 2 yrs. AD after I got drafted in 65, a 6 yr. break-in-service, and then another 30+ as a s a reservist. Haven’t flown Space-A yet but have stayed many times in Space A lodging at Andrews, JAX, and other bases. My understanding is that Space A travel has become much more user friendly than it use to be. It might be helpful to get some accurate input from some AD Air Force who work in Space-A.

Yes I have, it was not a bad experience. The only problem was not the fault of MAC, this service member's wife was seated right next to me, the rest of the family was on the other side of her. She smelled like she had not bathed/showered in two weeks. So, please if you fly in any manner, please bathe.

Space A is tough enough when you are young and physically fit. I can't imagine running myself through the ordeal with any physical impairments. The opportunity is great, but I would think you would have to be pretty darn desperate to fly Space-A.

Yes, my wife and I make extensive use of Space A flights, both USAF aircraft such as the C-17, C-5, KC10, and KC-135R, and the chartered commercial flights from BWI to Germany and JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. As PO1 Wendell says below, have cash or credit card available in case you must use a commercial flight to get back home from your away destination. This has happened to us as recently in January when we had to return home from Tokyo after taking C-17s from JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to Travis AFB and from there through JB Elmendorf-Richardson to Yokota AB in Japan. I had to take the every Friday commercial hop from BWI up to JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to get our car and drive back to the DC area.
Note also that your return may not be to the same Aerial Port of Embarkation from which you left. This problem has happened to us about half the time, most recently when we left from JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and flew to RAF Mildenhall, but our return was to Seymour-Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. We rented a car to get back to DC but then had to take a C-17 from JB Andrews up to JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to again get the car. Fortunately, unlike BWI and SEATAC airports, military bases do not charge a fee for parking in their long-term parking lots.
But we have flown for free on both the USAF AMC flights as well as the Navy's system of C-40s (737s that are either all pax with 121 seats or half cargo-half pax with half those seats), within the US to California, Virginia, Washington State, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Delaware and to Europe and Japan.
You just need to plan well and have enough time to wait (or pay) for a return flight if nothing seems to be going your way.

WE HAVE FLOWN SPACE-A MANY, MANY TIMES OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS AND HAVE HAD ONLY ONE OR TWO MILDLY DISTURBING EXPERIENCES WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE FUN ANYWAY. ITS THE WAY TO GO. Just tried the Space A system over the Easter weekend for the first time. My husband and I (I have a disability retirement) drove from PHX to Travis and asked them to help us figure out the system. They were very helpful, signed us up for a flight to Japan that was leaving that afternoon enroute to AK first, then the next day to Yokota. We had no problem getting to Japan, spent one night and Easter morning, were bumped from the flight to HI but waited around for about an hour and were reinstated (everyone else had left, so it was just my husband and I and a family of three, one of which was a C-17 pilot). Had a repeat of Easter the next day in HI, spent an afternoon at Hickam PAX terminal before getting a flight back to Travis. No glitches to speak of, other than getting bumped a couple of times and waiting for the next flight. It was a great adventure, but we discussed things that we could do and things that we would need or not need if/when we fly Space-A again (for instance, we decided that a light blanket and a jacket are musts on these flights). We also carried a bag of snacks/food (bread and peanut butter, chips, water) with us so we wouldn't be dependent on having to buy food along the way should we be stranded somewhere.

Yes, I think Space, A should be available for all Veterans to use if and/or they are traveling by air.
I flew once from Dallas Texas to Athens, Georgia. I was given a nice first class seat, but wouldn't you know I got bumped by no less than a General. they got no argument from me. Later I had a seat on a multi prop Trailways plane that stopped at every small airport we came too. took us six hours to make it to Atlanta, Georgia.Sure would like to travel first class some time in the future.

A great benefit for sure and I'm glad it's been opened up to 100% disabled. I will note however that many of those aircraft are not particularly accessible, other than up the ramp. The passenger deck on a C-5 probably being the least accessible. How is that being addressed ?

What about wives of active duty deceased. When our spouses give their lives, the spouses and children who are left behind, we cannot fly without a sponsor, which is very difficult to do when the person is no longer living.

As a military retiree, my recommendation to the new space A eligiblles is to avoid flying space A during the peak season, like Summer months and when students are on break. Space A is based on priority and military retirees and 100% disabled are at the bottom of the priority list. If you do try to fly during this time frame, be ready to spend several days waiting and have your credit card with you in case you have to fly commercial. Space A is not really free... you pay in time and frustration IF you are using it as a travel system to get somewhere. The real way to travel space A is that the travel IS the adventure. You have to accept and somehow enjoy waiting around AMC terminals for hours or days, calling in and coming in, then going somewhere else when you’re turned away. Meeting people, reading a book, etc. If you’re trying to go to a specific place, buy a ticket, but if you just want to get on a jet going anywhere you may be in luck here.

Yes, when I was active duty I was allowed on The Grey Ghost with Marines to go visit my children after a nasty divorce and child custody battle, my x won because he was seen as the custodial parent while I traveled for work. I was treated so well, a F16 pilot even offered me a ride!

Space A information is very limited and posting to their boards are sporatic at best, providing a maximum of 48 hour notice. Is there a site that has visibility further out on possible flights in a central location rather than each Ops Facebook page?

For about the first ten to twelve years after I was medically retired, I would use Space-A whenever I wanted to go anywhere AMC had a aircraft going. Usually it would be in a C-130 within the United States. Every once in a while it would be a commercial airline flight the Government had chartered for overseas flights. I would also try to stay in the BEQ and use the chow-hall whenever possible during my trips. I could get by on less than $20 a day in that case, where if I had to stay in a hotel the room alone would take $40 or more a day. I haven't tried to catch a hop since I lost the use of my legs over a decade ago. My last trip was from Little Rock AFB to Hickam AFB and back. I would recommend to those who are newly eligible for this privilege to dress warm in layers or bring a small blanket

As long as you have the time to spare, and don't HAVE to be someplace on a certain date, Space-A is the way to go. Yes, you might have to spend a few nights in a hotel waiting on a flight, but the money saved IMO is worth it, plus what airline would allow you to sit in the cockpit with the crew for the entire flight. Space-A is a great experience.

Senator McCain mucked it up for 100% disabled vets!
We were already eligible for space A flights ever since 1982 as Priority 1 & our spouses were included as P-1 status & our dependants under 21 could fly un acompanied P-4 status with their tan cards!
I know because I used it every summer since 2004 to fly my family to Alaska for vacation.
But now thanks to McCain We are now P-6 & our spouses & dependants from what I'm told can't fly with us anymore!

Thanks Alot John FReakn McCain for taking benefits away & then taking credit he's the 1 that past the new law to make it happen & gracefully allow us to even fly ! ! !

I was XO of the Transient Company at Oakland Army Base 1968-69. We shipped troops all over the Pacific, but primarily to Vietnam, through Travis AFB. I was able to visit Hawaii and hopscotch my way across the Pacific enroute to my assignment in Vietnam via MAC Charter flights with commercial carriers. Free flight to Hawaii. $1.50 a night in a shared Quonset hut @BOQ Ft. Derussy.

This is an issue. Most of the time if someone is 100% Service connected, they aren't in a good way so need assistance. This should be added so that the vet can feel comfort that they have someone there to help then when needed or if they need that assistance.

Updated: here are the categories (note: higher priority over SPACE A, CAT 1 is what I will refer to as "Space Mandatory"..those traveling on official orders as well the cargo needed to support ongoing missions...then comes these SPACE available categories).

Category 1 Emergency leave.
Category 2 Environmental Morale Leave (EML)
Category 3 Ordinary leave. (note official dependents can fly Cat 3 if accompanying AD on Leave)
Category 4 Unaccompanied dependents on EML. (I believe CAT 4 or 5 is what unaccompanied dependents of AD can fly who are not on EML..but likely it's CAT 5)
Category 5 Permissive Temporary Duty and students.
Category 6 Retirees.

Good day to you Veterans especially you who are combat disabled. My sincere thanks to you and your family who continues to support you. In my 21 years of serve (currently AD) I have had success with SPACE A based on ~9 CONUS and OCONUS flights.
Granted, as AD my wife and I have the current benefit of a higher priority when traveling together on leave. However I have noticed most AMC (Air Mobiliy Commands) have facebook pages which provided great info from the AMC as well as from frequent fliers (presumably retired).

Those Frequent Fliers sometimes post historical analysis on best months to travel for that particular AMC (Microsoft Excel Snapshot). With some analysis of seats released on what category flyers get a SPACE A seat, you can significantly increase your chances of choosing the right AMC of departure and return if you keep supply and demand in mind. I have noticed some responses have included some AMC's that should be avoided which is also good info. I have noticed similar issues wiith certain air crews and pilots working against the SPACE A system or exploiting it (releasing less seats so they can be more comfortable or to accomodate stuff they buy for arbitrage). As a Marine, I have had more positive experiences with the Airmen at AMC's but there is always that 10%+ that often harm the reputation of the majority so I would not rule out any AMC unless you have a good evidence based reason to do so (like they only have small planes and hardly release any SPACE A seats).

I recommend studying the supply and demand of AMCs of interest to include timing (Flying when kids are out of school and during summer and winter rotations is not advised). I hope this is at least somewhat helpful for you and you are able to explore some more of our great country as well as the world God has provided.

Last time was returning to Hawaii from NY when the Oklahoma City bombing occurred. Took a month to get back as all flights were routed to Tinker AFB.
Otherwise it would've only taken a couple days.

BARBARA Lucas, MSG (Ret) US Army. I have flown Space A many, many times. For my birthday one weekend I flew to Hawaii. Getting over was not problem, but returning I had to get a commercial flight back. You have to have a lot of patience and money. I do not understand why dependents rank higher than retirees. My space A category is 5, I believe. I plan on returning to Bonn, Germany next year for my granddaughter 10th DOB.

Funny story perhaps... In the late 60's, I used to always trade in my "guaranteed round trip" ticket, required to get a weekend pass. Most often, I'd then go for the $25 "standby ticket", and either Delta or then Eastern would accept either standby ticket, (sometimes frantically running between separate terminals in Atlanta). Occasionally when bumped, I learned you can go out on the flight line and pick up a private aircraft flight that beats the airline. Once I had only 4 hours to get back to work in Beaufort 350 miles away, so I went to my (primarily local private aircraft) airport. There was a National Guard C-135, just uncommonly sitting there. Asking where they were headed and when, they said in 15 minutes, back to Savannah. After changing into my work uniform, they allowed me on, and I made it back in time for work, promptly at 1630. Lots of travelling inexpensively, sometimes I didn't get to my destination as planned, (like when MLK was shot in Memphis), but I always made it back in time, and not AWOL! Be flexible, but ready for instant changes or disappointment. I think it is a great policy to give the disabled vets this benefit, and they should also be given priority. But, I also think they should also allow anyone like a spouse aboard, if needed for their support!

Yes! It was incredible. My pregnant wife, son and I flew from Frankfurt Am Main to Dover, De back in 1991. We had to climb up to the cabin section of this C-131 through the cargo area. I'll never forget it. The flight was $30 for the 3 of us!

CPT Henry J Bevil, 100% combat disabled. My wife is my caregiver. There is no instance where I can travel without her or an automated mobility device. I find it strange that while living in Seattle, I was told and booked Space A travel to Korea. Why has that changed? I was allowed to include my wife. This was in 1990's and traveling as retired (20 years). I have since been declared 100% after fighting VA for 20 years. Yes, I worked and went to universities (11 ea) to get a B.A., MBA,and half of PhD until I burnt out. I worked 20 years after retirement, went to night school, and finally went to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) to help me when civilian doctors told me I needed to try harder for 100% disability. I had reached 90%, but it took the intervention of a VA doctor who handled PTSD. I did not ask for her letter, but it did get me 100%.
Now the Space A flights are great. Is there another category for retired and spouse or did Congress rewrite the rules?

Haven’t flown a MAC flight since ‘69 before shipping out to Nam. A lot of waiting and luck involved back then.

I appreciate Uncle Sam allowing the 100% disability benefit, but as with everyone else that meets this requirement and are physically restricted in movement, is this a feasible benefit if the spouse is the primary caregiver? And I would guess that the spouse is the main travel companion also. Doesn’t seem like it was a well thought out proposal when it was being constructed. Maybe they can amend it when they realize the awkwardness of a benefit that can’t be used by a 100% veteran. Good try, but no cigar.

My wife and I traveled by car from Atlanta to Charleston, SC to catch and hop to England via Europe. We did it twice. The first time we flew on a contract aircraft the day after the Berlin wall and when we landed in Frankfurt. We were deboarded and had to take our luggage to a set of storage lockers in the middle of the airfield. We were then allowed to pass through concertina wire to get to the terminal. Guards with dogs and weapons walked the area. We logged in and were available to catch the next flight to England. There were no quarters of hotels at midnight so our fellow travelers and we went to an all night snack bar on base. At 5:00 AM we ran to the terminal to check in to catch a C-130 going to England. We road sling seats and wore ear protectors. My wife and I had a great time meeting people, playing cards, and sharing stories of folks from all branches and mixed families. We visited our daughter and her Air Force husband and our three grandchildren in England. We returned on a C-141 coming back but as we left England the plane could not pressurize so we landed back in Germany. The next morning we flew through an airport in Maine and then back to Charleston. It was a wonderful trip.

Our next trip to England was more eventful. We left Charleston going to Madrid Spain. The C-141 had an autogiro problem and we swayed to the left and then swayed to the right all the way across the Atlantic. We had to wait a couple days at the Madrid base and then caught a plane going through Aviano Italy to Frankfurt. We had to stay overnight and had the best Italian meal we have ever had in basement of the Officers Club. The next morning we caught a flight into England to stay with our daughter and her family. Again we met some really wonderful folks of different backgrounds and experiences while playing cards. When we left England our aircraft had a problem that delayed us and we ended up landing in the Azores for several hours to repair the problem. We then made it back to Charleston and had more stories to tell. We have truly enjoyed flying SpaceA and would tell any retiree or military person to do it but make sure you have time to be redirected to unknown locations that create more adventures. Thank You.

Space A is NOT the regular scheduled airlines!! Mission requirements override all Space A seat allocation. There are times pax may be bumped at a scheduled stop if on loaded cargo won’t permit non active duty or aircrew only personnel. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s a possibility. As a space A pax, always have money available to get a commercial flight if you get bumped. Almost ALL military passenger terminal personnel will go the extra mile to help, BUT, you accept the risk of interrupted travel plans.
Also, YOUR attitude will probably affect your outcome!!

Why aren’t caregivers allowed to accompany 100% disabled veterans? I need many physical and emotional “back-ups” every day and it would not be a good idea to turn me loose on the general public or active duty personnel if I needed what only my caregiver is able to provide.

NO, BUT THE OFFER SOUNS GOOD. I HAVE AN INTREST IN KNOWING ABOUT HOW THE OPERATION WORKS.
