Yesterday as I started my run a flock of American White Ibis approached me rather discretely. They obviously thought I would throw bread crumbs their way. A few of the birds simply dug their beaks into the ground after realizing I did not bring any bread with me. I started my run shortly thereafter.

I love watching birds. Cardinals in the morning in the pasture is my favorite. They are so beautiful it inspires me throughout the day.

I love listening to the cardinals talk back and forth in the morning too. I totally agree.

In 2003 I was senior NCO for an MDMP training team. We traveled around 1st Army AO in vans training Reserve and Guard units being mobilized. I would always carry my binos, and when we stopped along the way I'd often walk around rest areas looking for birds. The teams always busted on me.
One day we stopped in a Maryland rest area, and one of the LTCs on our team hung around after everyone left for the facilities. He quietly said to me "Master Sergeant, please don't tell anyone, but I'm a bird watcher too. What are you seeing?"
He was a closet birder.

I only know about bird watching from the movie: The Big Year. I was highly impressed with the acting and the story line. Black, Martin and Wilson do a superb job. This movie introduced me to the Audubon Society.
MSG, your birding watching skills and knowledge are probably much more advanced than mine. I am slowly beginning to see the significance of these flying creatures in the animal kingdom though. Thanks for sharing your experience.

During the second Gulf War, one of our warriors blogged as "Birding Babylon" (http://birdingbabylon.blogspot.com/). I loved to read his posts. I find bird watching provides opportunities to travel in areas normally people wouldn't get access to. I traveled a lot in business, and have been to India, all over the US, Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, Europe, and Scandinavia. Birds are everywhere, and is a great supplemental activity wherever one finds themselves.
