It is hard to affect your higher echelon units but that shouldn't be a point to simply give up. If you don't know I am huge proponent of esprit de corps and unit history. If a soldier is proud of his unit he will do all that he can to maintain that pride in that unit and perform at his best. I wanted to effect my battalion with this. Myself and another soldier came up with an idea of doing an event that caters to the unit's history. So we came up with a Ruck March that had signs along the way that read of the achievements from the militia men in Revolutionary War to our units start as a Confederate Infantry Regiment to where we are today as the 120th Infantry Regiment. To enable this I procured a tangible that could be given out so soldiers could look back at this event and recall the pride they had. I created the "3rd North Carolina" Tab. My Regiment was called the 3rd NC until we were called into federal service for WWI. The event went extremely well. Our battalion CSM was at the finish line handing out tabs to those that finished. Soldier took away a sense of pride of this and now this will be an annual event for our battalion. I can say that I was proud to have started this.

The whole intention of this was to produce a soldier that takes pride in all that he does. So when he sees a soldier from another battalion he can say that he is the "3rd NC" and we are the best in the state. We will see how this turns out in time. When ever you pitched a plan or project that can deliver in the areas of performance, efficiency and money management, most Commands are all ears and willing to support. You just have to be prepared when you pitch your issues and have thought out and detailed plans to fix those issues.
