Have You Read About The Coast Guard veteran honored for heroism in the Vietnam War?

I never encountered any Coast Guardsmen while in Vietnam. I've read about them in Vietnam and they were as tough as the Navy "River Rats". Now one of them has been has been honored at the Coast Guard Academy with a plaque placed on the Wall Of Galantry.

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — Fires were raging and ammunition supplies were exploding during an enemy attack on a Navy base in Vietnam when William Carr ordered his Coast Guard patrol boat ashore to respond to the mayhem on March 10, 1968.

Inspiring. Ran into a Coast Guardsman in Iraq. He was an attorney working detainee release boards at Camp Bucca.

I knew that the Coast Guard was there but I had not heard of this. Glad that he is being recognized.

I served with several Chiefs who were in Vietnam. Not fun times by their accounts. Patrolling the vast rivers often being shot at from the jungle with very little protection. Semper Paratus.

there have been coasties in many places and spaces that we have been but little is known of our presence. many brave deeds have been done but never recognised. i am glad to see one of ours getting the recognition he deserves.there is another you may not know of from world war 2
Douglas Munro, a native to Cle Elum, led a small boat force during the battle of Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942. Munro was fatally wounded while extracting a battalion of nearly 500 Marines who were under attack by Japanese forces.

They were there .. and responded! They outcome may have been worse than whT happened... more helped, saved.. Absolutely great! They done what their motto says “Semper Perratus!” (I think that’s it)...

When at my second S.E.A. Assignment
Udorn (Udon-Than)RTAB.. we had Coast Guard that ran Loran on the base.. I went a little over my authorization and talked to a CPO there(their Cmdr, a LCDR was gone to Bankok on CG business). I convinced him to have his Cmdr get with our Food Svc to provide them Pastries for their Coffee breaks at their structure .. They already bought coffee from us. Chief told me that was within his authorization .. He said he had to look
at agreements they had with local business .. he did.. he seen an agreement with a local little Debbie distributor distributor was up for renegotiation.. He stated that lately
They were getting stale pastries, some had damaged packaging at times.. So he made the decision to notify the local contract that he would not renew as soon as he filed the request to deal with our Base Food Service.. The Contracts office informed him Loran was obligated to a contract with a local distributor.. I don’t know what went on there, but the chief called his people in Bankok, and they called S’where... Word came back with copies to our base command they could request sustenance supplies(specifically
Pastries) for the Coast Guard Loran station. The local liaison Contract person filed a complaint that the Loran was obligated to have a Local contract..
The Site Cmdr responded; due to heightened security measures (the health /safety of our personnel is of utmost importance to operation of our station and to those that rely on us. Signed _____ LCmdr..Loran Station Udorn..we can no longer participate in the local contract.
He sent copies to all concerned.. The Local contract complained to the Thai
Base Cmdr and he concurred with the
Coast Guard.. was that the end? No, the little guy went to Bankok., The High esteemed Liason told him he concurred
With the Loran Cmdr.... little man was on his way back and was involved in a fatal accident when changing buses .. So no blame went on anybody but him.. The bus driver said in the paper he blasted his horn and tried to stop.. it was muddy red clay.. the worst stuff to try and stop in when when wet/rainy. Geez, talk about being under the bus... Little man was injured too bad to live long.. died a day or so later.. We’ll, no more whining from him.. life went on and our bakers were

Director at the USO wanted to purchase from Food Svcs using that same line the
Loran Cmdr. Did.. Sounded good to me!
After all those that go to the USO were our Military and deserved to be e to be healthy / safe too. Our base Cmdr and their director agreed as did the Thai Cmdr... The contract office never got a local replacement liaison for contracts
For As long as I had left.. We had a busy Bakery.. The Thai general enjoyed visiting our Dining Hall with our Base and Wing Cmdr. His fave meal was breakfast
He liked the S.O.S. Best... some guys used the grease from the burger and mixed flour and some butter and basic spices.. (I drained the grease out via the chinacsp strainer, set it aside, got the flour/butter roux work’g, add the Milk,
Get gravy done, add the beef and some more beef base. I didn’t want people using the special rm sn more than necessary)he liked coming through every month.. it was their base.. we were guests.. oh yeah, biscuits not toast..
I had not worked every time he visited...
When he did I had a guy that made it like I did.. Only once I know of when neither of us worked.while we were there. did he visit.. if he had S.O.S. .. May Buddha
