Have you read this - World War II unselfish service?

Seventy years ago, millions of Americans were returning home from their posts on ships, remote islands in the Pacific Ocean and occupation duty in Europe.

They had just celebrated the victory over Japan, which was sealed on the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2. That marked the end of nearly four years of U.S. combat in World War II, the most costly war in history.

One thing the Greatest Generation had that seems to be lacking today is that sense of patriotism and pride in your country. Those who serve still get it, but most, who have never put their life on the line in defense of their country, will never understand what it is to give unselfishly for your country. It was JFK who said, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country!" I wish we had that spirit but times are different and people have changed. People used to have thick skins and dealt with adversity better. Now everything offends us. We've also gotten lazy. One of the downsides of technology is that people are more into themselves. It's all about self now. I miss that sense of unity and indomitable fighting spirit this country once had.

I am all for the contributions of the "Greatest Generation." Many of them did sacrifice and we do owe them a debt of gratitude for what they accomplished in WWII. Nobody can take that honorable legacy from them. With that said, they have also been the greatest generation when it comes to deficit spending. This is the same generation that felt future generations should pay for their "entitlements." Thomas Jefferson wrote that every generation should be responsible for the debt it incurred. Apparently they didn't think much of Jefferson's wisdom. Under their political leadership this country went from one that had a surplus to one that is up to its eyeballs in debt. I would like to remember them more for the positive things they did rather than for the bag of debt my generation inherited from them.
