They know the units history, they have personally seen what works, and what doesn't. They can identify quickly what the unit needs, and help prioritize. Outside of that, it never hurts to call or e-mail Branch and see if they can't assist you with getting you the location you want, or at least close to it. You're the same rank as your branch manager it think it's fair that they at least entertain a conversation with you. I've always talked to my branch manager before I even come up on assignment when I know it's getting close.  Response by CW2 Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 30 at 2013 9:48 AM 2013-12-30T09:48:31-05:00 2013-12-30T09:48:31-05:00 TSgt Private RallyPoint Member 29295 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Certainly. I'm stuck in a situation where my branch manager, despite numerous phone calls and e-mails, will only give me the options of Drum or Bliss when I leave Korea. He is very curt, and never gives full explanations on why I can't go back to Carson (I know it's a highly requested duty station). Having already been to Drum, and Bliss having zero job opportunities for my wife, my hands are pretty much tied. If we could sustain a nice dialogue, at least maybe then I wouldn't be so pissy about the matter. I called our functional (AF version of Branch Manager) last year to find out why I wasn't getting orders anywhere after having been at my base for 11 years. I was told it was because I hadn't updated my dream sheet in years. No crap that's because the list of bases I wanted to go if I was leaving where I was hadn't changed in all those years. She was a bi+ch about it too on the phone. Added one base after that and got a 4 year assignment to Japan.
