Also hydrate. The humidity is nuts here. I don’t know much about the land nav course the RTI uses, but the brush and undergrowth gets intense at times. I seen one SPC doing land nav the other day and he looked lost and dehydrated. Please for the love of god hydrate. Lots of poison ivy, ticks, chiggers, snakes and poison ivy as well. The third time I have a heat stroke while on the rifle range. The temperature in combination with the high humidity will get you. Drink lots of water and make sure to eat your meals. I am from Sacramento California and could take heat, but not with the humidity. They should give you time to acclimatize before doing anything strenuous. If not watch out, Camp Shelby will bight you. Land nav course isn’t terrible. Enough have been through that there should be trails.

They teach active component stuff that as guard dudes, even AGR guys like me, don’t or have never used. Learn what they tell you. People fail out academically almost every cycle.

I used to the the chief instructor for the IN BN that included MSLC. Now I work down the hall at MLC. Bragg, or almost any other Southeastern Facility. Some of the underbrush is difficult but not exceedingly so. Your biggest problems will be with chiggers and fire ants, along with other animals that roam the base, and then the water hazards can come with their own set of issues. You may want to pull up a google earth view on line to see what may be install for you.
